10 Grade Chemistry – Enzymes

1 Diagram of apparatus:

Aims
To understand how the amount of catalase affects reaction time with hydrogen peroxide

2 Clearly state your dependant variable:

Time taken to get 2ml of O2

3 Clearly state the variables which could affect your dependant variable

- Amount of potato pieces/catalase

- Concentration of H2O2
-
4 Which variable from box 3 are you going to investigate (independent variable)?
Amount of potato pieces/catalase
5 Using the boxes below complete the variables

Variables:
Independent Dependent Control Variables

Amount of potato Time taken to get 2ml volume of H2O2

pieces/catalase of O2
Concentration of
H2O2

volume of O2
produced

6. Using you independent and dependant variables, clearly state the aim of your investigation
and write your research question (specific to your experiment)
How does the amount of catalase in the form of equal sized potato cubes affect the time taken to
produce 2ml of O2 gas from -undecided volume- of H2O2?

7. What is your hypothesis?

The amount of time taken to produce 2ml of O2 will decrease as the amount of potato cubes increase.
8. What is the scientific reasoning behind your hypothesis
As the volume/amount of a catalyst increases, the reaction time also hastens, producing more oxygen in
a shorter amount of time.

9. Record your method below. (Remember you need to record EVERYTHING YOU DO and
ALL PIECES OF APPARATUS YOU USE!)
EQUIPMENT
- A graduated cylinder, 25ml
- A flask
- A tube
- A gas syringe
- 20ml H2O2 concentration 10%
- A potato
- A cutting tool
- A stopwatch
METHOD
1. Cut the potato into 15 equal sized pieces
2. Connect the flask cap to the gas syringe with the tube
3. Measure out 20 ml of H2O2, and then pour into the flask
4. Put one potato piece in and then close the cap of the flask immediately
5. Start the stopwatch and stop once the amount of O2 gas reaches 2ml
6. Repeat with 2, 3, 4, 5 pieces
10. Record your results in the space below
