1. What are rocks made of? Minerals and other smaller rocks
2. What is a physical change in an object? A change in appearance based on sized but is still the
object.
3. What is a chemical change in an object? When an objects chemical compound is changed and
CANNOT be changed back to its original form.
Earth’s Processes
- Weathering, erosion, and deposition are processes that act together to wear down and build up the
Earth’s surface.
- These processes have occurred for billions of years.
- The Earth’s surface is always changing
- The heat from the core is the energy that drives the movement of land and materials on Earth’s
crust
Weathering
- Physical Weathering – The physical breaking up of rock but does not change the composition (wind,
water, ice, etc.)
- Chemical Weathering – Changing the composition of rock, Examples are: Water, it can dissolves
rocks; Oxygen, it can cause oxidation; Carbon Dioxide, it mixes with water to form carbonic acid
which breaks down rocks; Living Organisms, lichens and tree roots create a weak acid that can
break down rocks; Acid Rain, elements like sulfur which combine with water to make acid rain
which can break down rocks
- Erosion – When Earth’s surface is worn away
- Deposition – Where you have weathering the materials that are broken away are stored someplace
else

When something happens
When an object is changed such as erosion the effect
but is still a smaller version is smaller versions of the
of the object rock

Erosion
The breaking down of When something
a rock using water, runs over a surface it
wind, etc. starts to wear down
