Q 1. Why did Jason readily agree to drive his father to Mijas?

Answer:
Jason readily agreed to drive his father to Mijas because he was very fond of driving. He had just
learnt to drive, but he had hardly ever got the opportunity to drive the car. So it was a great
opportunity for him to drive the car all by himself, which he did not want to miss at any cost.

Q 2. What excuse did Jason invent as an explanation for his being Iate?
Answer:
Jason had promised to pick his father up at 4 p.m. He took the car to the garage and left his car for
service. In the meanwhile, he went to the theatre in order to watch a movie and got lost track of
time. As a result, he got two hours late, so he invented an excuse as an explanation for being late
that it took him longer as the car needed some major repairs. He also told his father that he had
come as quickly as possible.

Q 3. Why did his father say that he was angry with himself, not with Jason?
Answer:
Jason’s father said that he was angry with himself, not with Jason because he realized that he had
failed as a father since his son felt that he had to lie to him. So, he was disappointed in himself as a
parent as he considered himself responsible for Jason's lie. In his opinion, it is the duty of the
parents to teach their children to differentiate between right and wrong and give them enough
confidence to speak the truth even though they are at fault.

Q 4. Why did Jason’s father decide to walk the 18 miles back home?
Answer:
Jason's father decided to walk the eighteen miles back home because he wanted to punish himself
for he was hurt by Jason’s lie and considered himself responsible for his son’s action. He was of
the view that if his son had to lie to him, he had failed as a parent. Moreover, it made Jason realize
his mistake and that he had disappointed his father. Therefore, in spite of Jason’s protests and
apologies, his father went through a lot of physical and emotional pain.

Q 5. What was the most distressing and painful experience for Jason?
Answer:
The most distressing and painful experience for Jason was the feeling of guilt and the regret that he
had to go through for causing disappointment to his father. As a result of Jason's lie, his father
decided to walk the eighteen miles back home. It was dark while his father continued to walk along
the dusty road. Jason made apologies for his wrongdoing but all in vain. He started following his
father in the car, hoping he would consider his request after some time. But, his father just ignored
him and went on. Jason felt ashamed of himself for letting his father go through so much physical
and emotional pain. In this way, this experience helped Jason become a man of strong character by
teaching him a lesson that he should never tell a lie again.

Q 6. Was Jason’s father angry with him because he came late?

Answer:
No, Jason’s father was not angry because he came late. Actually, he was disappointed in Jason
because he had lied to him, and was angry with himself because he believed that this act of Jason
made him feel that he had failed as a parent.

Q 7. What is your opinion of the way Jason's father responded to his son’s lying to him?
Answer:
There is no doubt about the fact that parents’ behavior makes or break a child’s life. In my
opinion, the way Jason’s father responded to his son’s lying to him was quite different from that of
an ordinary father. It was quite sensible of him that instead of using force, he punished his son by
making him think over his action. He made Jason realize his mistake on his own by taking a
decision which reformed his behavior. In this way, the reaction of Jason’s father proved to be very
effective in teaching him a lesson for life.

Q 8. Jason said that he learned something invaluable from this experience, What do you think he
learned besides learning not to lie?
Answer:
Jason said that he learned something invaluable from this experience. Besides learning not to lie,
he learned the importance of time and commitment. This is because although he had promised his
father to meet him at 4:00 pm, he was so engrossed in watching the movie at the theatre that he
lost track of time and reached two hours late. He would not have to tell a lie to his father if he had
not wasted his time. Moreover, seeing his father’s disappointment and the physical and emotional
pain that he went through made Jason realize his mistake. Another lesson that he learned was
that parents have many expectations attached to their children. In short, this lesson made him
realize how a small act of his can hurt another person, and he learned the importance of being
punctual, keeping his promise, and never hurt his father’s sentiments by deceiving him.

Q 11. Do you think Jason would have learnt his lesson if his father had not got angry with him and
punished him?
Answer:
No, I do not think that Jason would have learnt his lesson if his father had not got angry with him
and punished him. In my opinion, if his father had ignored his mistake, he would never have
realized that telling a lie is a bad habit. Moreover, he would not have learnt that he had hurt his
father’s feelings by deceiving him. In other words, Jason would neither have realized the value of
time, commitment and truthfulness nor about his father’s expectations if his father had not shown
any reaction.
