The purpose of ADR adaptation of vehicles is to make it possible to carry
certain types of classified goods in such a way that they do not cause an
accident or make an accident more serious.
Volvo’s ADR equipment is fitted at the factory. This means that the ADR
equipment is entirely designed and installed with the high level of quality for
which Volvo chassis are renowned.
In practice, full ADR adaptation of the chassis involves enclosing the
electrical systems so that wiring and connections are protected from me-
chanical wear.
In the cab there is a sign holder for a warning sign stating the type of dan-
gerous goods being carried. If an accident occurs, the consequences must
be minimised and limited. It must be possible to quickly inform the rescue
personnel about the type of goods the vehicle is carrying, so that they can
take the correct action without delay.
The ADR1 package fulfils ADR types AT, OX, FL, EX/II and EX/III. Without
rear window is required for ADR type OX.

Easily accessible emergency switch
To allow the driver to switch off the electric power in the event of
an accident, there is an easily accessible main switch in the cab.
A two-stage safety switch is used to prevent the power being
switched off by mistake. The switch is clearly marked.
The red safety switch on the instrument panel is clearly visible and easily
accessible.
Well protected electric cables and sealed connections
All the electric cables in the chassis behind the cab are especially
well protected against all forms of wear and impact by a durable
corrugated plastic hose. This eliminates the risk of sparking and
short-circuiting in the electrical system.
The rear frame-mounted terminal box, side marker lamps and tail
lamps are similarly well insulated to prevent leaking gas or inflam-
mable liquids from coming into contact with live parts.
Vehicles specified with trailer connections are supplied with
a 15-pole trailer connection approved for the transportation of
hazardous goods.
Battery box with electronic ADR unit
Depending on model variant, there are alternative positions for
the battery box.
Inside the battery box there is an electronic ADR unit whose
task is to transmit the signal from each respective switch (inside
and outside the cab) and thus disconnect the battery.
All the cable connectors are protected by plastic covers. The
battery box also features ventilation holes for getting rid of any
explosive gases that may build up in the batteries.

ADR-approved parking heater
A parking heater, that satisfies the ADR regulations in terms of
installation, is available as an option. The heater is switched off
automatically if the engine stops or if a power take-off is used.
Prepared with warning plate retainer on front of cab
When most substances covered by ADR regulations are being
transported, the vehicle has to be fitted with rectangular, reflective
and orange-coloured warning plates. Volvo’s ADR-adapted cabs
have an ADR warning plate retainer (EC approved) fitted on the
front of the cab.
ADR requires fire extinguisher(s)
A vehicle intended for the transportation of hazardous goods shall
be equipped with one or more portable fire extinguishers with a
minimum total capacity of 12 kg dry powder (or an equivalent
capacity for any other suitable extinguishant agent). One of them
must have a minimum capacity of 6 kg.
The fire extinguishers are not included and must be ordered
separately. Above mentioned legal privisions apply to driving of the
vehicle, i.e. must be fulfilled by the user of the vehicle.
Optional equipment
Some safety equipment can be ordered directly from the factory,
such as wheel chocks, warning vests and warning triangles.
According to the ADR regulations from 1 January 1999, two
warning triangles are sufficient in the safety equipment. The previ-
ously mandatory warning lamps may, however, still be ordered
directly from the factory by specifying FLASHL-A.
The electronic ADR unit is located in the inner right-hand corner of the battery box.
