Functional English
● Sentence = Subject + Predicate (verb + object).
● A sentence must have a verb.
● There are eight types of parts of speech. They are – noun,
pronoun, adjective, verb, adverb, preposition, conjunction,
interjection.
● Tense of a writing should remain consistent.
● Our objective is to convincingly communicate
ideas, not to impress others.
● Language keeps changing.

Metaphors and Vocabularies


● Jargon: Special words or expressions used by a profession or
group that are difficult for others to understand. For example -
“Singing from the same hymn sheet.”
● Tongue twister: A sequence of words or sounds, typically of an
alliterative kind, that are difficult to pronounce quickly and
correctly, as for example “Peter piper picket a peck of pickled
pepper.”
● Stress: In phonetics, stress is the degree of emphasis given a
sound or syllable in speech, also called lexical stress or word
stress. However, in all languages stress is used to make words
more understandable on the word level and is especially apparent
in the pronunciation of individual words or their parts.

● Tenacity (noun): The quality or fact of being able to grip
something firmly.
● Tenacity (adjective): Tending to keep a firm hold of something;
clinging or adhering closely.
Presentation skill development

● Devising is everything.
● Set your scheme. It is necessary to know why
you are making a presentation.
● Do not be too shy and brittle.
● Speak loud and clear. Avoid speaking in hushed
tones.
● Make eye contact with your audience. Have a
short glance over your audience and make a
facial expression that you think well of the
audience.
● Be exuberant and dynamic about your work.
● Make a quick exchange of greeting.
● Realize that people want you to succeed.
Audiences want you to be interesting,
invigorating, informative and entertaining.
● They are cheering for you.
● Gain experience which is the key to effective
speaking.
