Tomato (Solanum lycopersicon)

Citric acid is abundant in tomatoes. It is the most abundant acid in the fruit along with malic
acid. The plant is cultivated all around the world and is considered a staple ingredient in various
cuisines all around the world due to its sourness, including Philippines. It can be found everywhere in
the country in its original form. (Stuart, 2018)

The tomato plant belongs to the family Solanacae, and are branched that usually grows and
spreads about 60 – 180 cm. The plant has different forms. It is usually trailing as it grows its fruit, but
some of its forms are compact and upright. Its fruits grows from 1.5 cm to 7.5 cm or more. Tomatoes
vary in colors such as red, scarlet, yellow, and even purple. Its color also indicates its flavor. As a
tomato becomes redder, the tomato becomes sweeter. The fruit is beneficial when consumed due to its
vitamin C content. (Britannica, 2018)
Citric acid is the main component of the citric acid cycle, hence the name. A process which is
very essential in human beings for it is the first step in the reaction that produces energy for our body. A
study by Sugino et.(2007) shows the effect of citric acid on a person’s physical fatigue by giving two
groups of volunteers, with one group given citric acid and the other group with placebo, workload
trials. The research showed that the group who received the citric acid felt less fatigue compared to the
other group.
According to the New England Wild Flower Society (2018), tomatoes can be found in areas that
are Anthropogenic or areas man-made and have been disturbed by humans.

Rust (Iron Oxide)

As explained by the University of Illinois (2007), rust is the oxidation of iron when exposed to
air and water, hence the name Iron Oxide. Rusts in metals usually takes the form of an orange powder
at the surface of a metal. As the metal further oxidizes, it becomes weaker and the rust becomes more
pronounced.
This is especially true in vehicles, infrastructures and households. In the United States of
America, drivers annually pay $3 billion due to damages caused by rust, as a result of the de-icing salts
and solutions used in thawing snow on highways. It is very dangerous when rust is left to spread all
over the vehicle. It causes huge financial problems to the government and life threatening issues to the
people. (AAA, 2015)
Rust also causes significant damages to infrastructures, especially when the building is made
with substandard materials. Highway bridges, conventional reinforced-concrete bridges and steel
bridges are the most affected. These rusts can usually be observed under the bridges where its metal
framework is located. In 2016,U.S.A. spent 6% of its GDP due to this problem. (Energyskeptic, 2016)
