HYDROCARBONS

MODULE II

Prof. Flordeliza O. Babat

i

Introduction
The element carbon forms a very great number of compounds. Over 16 million carbon

containing compounds are known and about 90 % of the new compounds synthesized

each year contain carbon. In addition, the carbon atom can form four very stable, single-

covalent bonds. It also has the ability to form multiple bonds with other carbon atoms or

with atoms of other elements.

Throughout the discussion, self-assessment questions (SAQ) are given for you

to monitor yourself if you understood the concept. Be sure to try answering them before

looking at the answer to self-assessment question (ASAQ) which is provided at the

last part of the module.

Objectives
At the end of this module, you should be able to:

1. Differentiate the different classification of Hydrocarbon.

2. Classify the organic compounds according to the structure.

3. Derive the different types of Isomerism.

4. Recognize the uses of the different hydrocarbon.
