YEAR: 1
DURATION: 13 WKS
SUMMARY:
This course intends to teach students physical and chemical properties of organic compounds and also isomerism that exists
in some of these
ASSESSMENT:
Course work (Practical activities, Assignments, Mid Semester examinations) 40% , End of course Exam, 60%
AIMS OF STUDY:
1. To establish a foundation of the principles of Chemistry with Particular interest to those aspects which have direct
relevance to Agriculture
2. To give solid grounding in the basics of Organic Chemistry with a view to future application in other courses
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
1. Classify organic compounds by their functional groups and identify fundamental properties associated with these
functional groups
3. Predict products in reactions of alkanes, alkenes, alldehydes, ketones, alcohols, amines, amides, carboxylic acids and
esters
