ACADEMIC YEAR: 2019/2020 YEAR OF STUDY: 2ND SEMESTER: II

COURSE CODE: SCH 230 TITLE: The Chemistry of Carbonyl Compounds

COURSE LECTURER: Dr. Regina N. Bwire

LECTURER HOURS: Fridays 7-9 am MEA 001

COURSE OUTLINE

Course Description
Chemistry of Carbonyls compounds: - nomenclature, properties, structure, preparation, uses,
reaction and reaction mechanisms (carboxylic acid and derivatives; nitriles, imines; thioethers;
thiols; thiocarbonyls;). Keto-enol tautomerism. Epoxides, Organic chemistry of silicon and
phosphorus compounds

Aims and Objectives

At the end of this course the learner should be able to;

 Name and describe carbonyl compounds including their structures, reactions and
mechanisms

 Describe and show the importance of the concept of keto enol tautomerism as used in
organic chemistry

 Understand the organic chemistry of organometallic compounds and their applications
