Introduction
There’s often a gap between perception and reality in the wine world,
but it’s a veritable chasm in Ribera del Duero. The region is widely and
rightly recognised as the source of some of Spain’s best reds, thanks in
large part to Vega Sicilia and Dominio de Pingus, yet many people, even
those who should know better, perceive its wines as uniformly big and
powerful. This is demonstrably untrue. The denominación de origen
contains multitudes.

Sure, many of the wines are made from Ribera del Duero is a famously extreme, even

Tasting notes
Reds
Dominio de Pingus Cosecha 2018
99 (14.5%)
People who've never tasted it imagine that Pingus is a big, overpowering Ribera, but that has
never been true. Fully deserving of its status as one of Spain's and the world's greatest wines,
it hails from 4.2 hectares of vines in La Horra, spread across two contrasting sub-zones - San
Cristóbal and Barroso. There was no new wood at all on the 2018 - which has been the case
since 2012 - and a move towards bigger oak containers for 40% of the wine. Subtle, elegant
and effortlessly concentrated, it's scented and alluring, even as a young wine, with black
cherry and raspberry fruit, a hint of sweet spice and granular tannins. Balanced, refined and
very long on the palate. 2023-32

Vega Sicilia Único Reserva Especial NV

99 (14%)
The 2021 release of this legendary non-vintage blend of Tinto Fino and 6% Cabernet
Sauvignon is one of the best Reserva Especials I've tasted, fully justifying the use of a semi-
solera system at Vega Sicilia. Based on the 2009, 2010 and 2011 harvests, with bits and pieces
from other years, it's a wonderfully complex, balsamic red with aromas of tobacco leaf and
sweet spices, layers of supple red fruits, savoury umami tannins, scented oak and a long,
tapering finish. Drinkable now, but there's no need to hurry. 2025-40

Bodegas Garmón Contintental Garmón Cosecha 2018

98 (14.5%)
It's easy to forget that the first vintage of Garmón was as recent as 2014, such is the quality
of the wine, but the García family's long-standing association with the region has certainly
contributed to its success. Picked ten days later than the 2017, this is my favourite release
yet, combining vineyards between 30 and 100 years' old in Anguix, Baños de Valdearado,
Moradillo and Tubilla. Chalky, balanced and effortlessly refined, with notes of red berries,
fennel and spice, subtle oak and thrilling freshness. A truly great Ribera. 2022-35

Dominio de Es La Diva Cosecha 2018

98 (14.5%)
It's always interesting to taste La Diva alongside La Mata, as the two single-vineyard wines
express different soil types. The former is very much a limestone-influenced wine, sourced
from the Valdegtailes cru. Aged in one-year-old wood and featuring 4.8% Albillo in the
blend, it's wonderfully dense, floral, spicy and precise with lavender and liquorice aromas,
plush tannins, lots of youthful, bramble fruit and a fresh, saline finish. 2024-32

Vega Sicilia Único Reserva 2011

98 (14%)
"The only problem with the 2011," says Gonzalo Iturriaga, "is that it followed 2010." I gave
the latter wine a perfect score, so I know what he means. And yet this is still a fantastic Único
in its own right. Marrying Tinto Fino with 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, it's not as powerful or
showy as the 2010, but has considerable elegance and finesse. Sweet, leafy, balsamic flavours
are framed by perfumed French and 30% American oak, with the mint of the Cabernet
surprisingly noticeable on the refreshing finish. The tannins are very fine indeed, caressing
the tongue as they pass. 2025-40

Bodegas Félix Callejo Félix Callejo Cosecha 2018

97 (14.5%)
Adorned with a cheeky photo of pater familias and founder Félix Callejo, this is the top
wine from the bodega, which has attained new heights of quality in 2018. The new oak
can sometimes dominate this wine in its youth, but that's not the case here. Balanced and
refreshing, it shows the poise of a wine from chalky soils at 920 metres, with a new found
elegance. Very polished. 2023-35

Bodegas Marta Maté Marta Maté Cosecha 2016

97 (14.5%)
This stunning, mould-breaking red is arguably the closest you can get to the flavours and
structure of a top Pinot in Ribera del Duero. Predominantly made from old-vine parcels in
Tubilla del Lago and Gumiel de Mercado, this 10% new barrel and foudre-aged red is fresh,
elegant, racy and well balanced, with tangy acidity, pomegranate and tobacco pouch notes,
fine tannins and a tapering finish. Wonderfully polished winemaking. 2022-30

Bodegas Valdaya Mirum Cosecha 2018

97 (14.5%)
Valdaya's top red, Mirum, keeps improving with every vintage and is now among the best
wines in Ribera del Duero. Made with Tinto Fino from old-vine parcels - Los Bueyes and
Las Piedras - in Baños de Valdearodos, it's very much a limestone-influenced style from 925
metres, with subtle wood, chalky minerality, red berry fruit, tension and floral, violet top
notes. Long, stylish and beautifully judged. 2022-30

Bodegas Valtravieso Gran Valtravieso Cosecha 2016

97 (15%)
"What's good in these grapes expresses itself without intervention," says Bordeaux-trained
Ricardo Velasco and that's certainly the case in this varietal Tinto Fino from high-altitude
Finca La Revilla. Fermented with 10% stems and aged in a combination of 50% new barrels
and cement tanks, it's a stunning release of a wine last produced in 1995. Fresh, nuanced and
layered, with blackberry and pomegranate flavours, chalky minerality, some pepper spice
and effortless length and balance. 2021-31

Hacienda Monasterio Hacienda Monasterio Reserva 2016

97 (15%)
This superb Reserva from the textbook, cooler climate 2016 vintage is one of the best young
wines I have ever tasted from Carlos de la Fuente and Peter Sisseck. Marrying Tinto Fino
with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in 40% new wood, this comes from a parcel with a very
high limestone content, which adds freshness on these warm slopes. Scented, graceful and
refined, it has cassis and blackberry fruit, graceful tannins, subtle wood and a long, tapering
finish. Exceptional winemaking. 2023-32

Vega Sicilia Valbuena 5 Reserva 2016

97 (14.5%)
You wouldn't call Valbuena a poor man's Vega Sicilia at €85 a bottle, but it's certainly more
accessible, price-wise, than Único. Sourced from north-facing slopes in Valladolid, this is
a cuvée of Tinto Fino with 6% Merlot that demonstrates the quality of an excellent vintage.
Orange zest, blackberry and dark chocolate flavours are embellished by refreshing acidity
and subtle, spicy, scented oak. One of the best Valbuenas of recent years. 2023-32

Ausàs Interpretación Cosecha 2018

96 (15%)
Ribera benefited from regular seasons and a very cold winter in 2018, according to Xavier
Ausàs, which is why he's such a fan of the vintage. This is the third release of this excellent,
pan-Rioja blend from Vega Sicilia's long-term former winemaker and is his best yet.
Combining Tinto Fino grapes from five villages between 780 and 900 metres, it's a subtle,
refined red that carries its 15% alcohol with ease, showing chalky minerality, scented 35%
new wood, tobacco and red berry fruit flavours and a long, stylish, lightly balsamic finish.
2022-31

Bodegas Hnos. Pérez Pascuas Pérez Pascuas Gran Reserva 2015

96 (14.5%)
The oldest vines in the Valtarreña vineyard, planted 88 years ago, supply the grapes for the
Pérez Pascuas' top wine, which is then made from a further selection of the best barrels.
Youthful, vigorous and typically well structured, this spent 26 months in new, mostly
American oak before bottling. Firm, tight and grippy, this is like a coiled spring, with
considerable depth and fruit power, layers of tannin and a fresh, almost saline finish.
2025-35

Bodegas Hnos. Pérez Pascuas Viña Pedrosa Gran Reserva 2015

96 (14.5%)
Only made in the best vintages, such as 2008, 2010 and 2015, the Pedrosa Gran Reserva
hails from two parcels - Valtarreña and El Espino - that are both over 60 years' old. Inky,
dark and well structured, this is a wine that is built to age for a decade or more. Aged in new
French and American oak, it's savoury, dense and just beginning to develop some balsamic
undertones to complement the flavours of black fruits and dried herbs. 2025-35

Bodegas Valtravieso Tinta Fina Cosecha 2018

96 (14.5%)
Tinta Fina comes from the best parcels of Valtravieso's La Revilla estate, located at 915
metres on the páramo (moorland) of Piñel de Arriba. Lightly wooded in older, larger barrels,
it has remarkable freshness and perfume and flavours that owe as much to Pinot Noir as
to Tempranillo. Chalky, spicy and pure, with raspberry and wild strawberry flavours, some
clove spice and caressing tannnins. 2021-26

Bodegas Vizcarra Inés Cosecha 2016

96 (14.5%)
Inés is the most "international" of his Tinto Finos, according to Juan Carlos Vizcarra, partly
because it contains 10% Merlot grown on chalky soils. Complex, fresh nuanced and focused,
it has fine tannins, subtle French and 10% American oak, tangerine and bramble fruit and a
tangy, herbal finish. 2023-31

Bodegas y Viñedos Gallego Zapatero Yotuel Finca Valdepalacios

96 Cosecha 2014
(14.5%)
Even better than the 2011, which I rated highly, Finca de Valdepalacios hails from a one-
hectare parcel of 79-year-old bush vines on a south-facing slope that's rich in clay. Co-
planted with 5% Garnacha and Albillo, this is a plusher, more concentrated style of Tinto
Fino from Gallego Zapatero, but is still at the restrained end of the Ribera scale, with
crunchy black fruits, some Mediterranean herbs and a long, stony, refreshing finish. Ageing
gracefully. 2021-29

Cillar de Silos Flor de Silos Cosecha 2018

96 (14.5%)
Cillar de Silos' top red comes from a single, 1.3-hectares parcel called La Revilla that
was planted more than a century ago in Quintana del Pidio. Easily handling its 85% new
wood, it's a delightfully fresh, intense, well-balanced expression of high altitude, old vine
Tempranillo, showing glossy tannins, perky freshness and flavours of plum, liquorice and
black cherry dusted with baking spices. 2023-35

Dominio de Atauta La Mala Reserva 2014

96 (15%)
Divided into ten "micro-parcels", according to winemaker Jaime Suárez, this incredible
1.09-hectare site is the most easterly of Dominio de Atauta's vineyards. Showing the
influence of its limestone soils, it combines the effortless concentration of 130-year-old
vines with mouth-watering acidity and minerality and top notes of thyme and rosemary.
Wonderfully refined. 2021-26

Dominio de Es La Mata Cosecha 2018

96 (14.5%)
"Masses of clay" is how Bertrand Sourdais describes the soils of this 0.25-hectare parcel
in the Atauta Valley, planted with Tinto Fino and 4% each of Albillo Mayor and Alicante
Bouschet. Tannic, strapping stuff, with 100% new wood for company, it's a dense, layered,
richly textured Ribera with a bloody, ferrous undertone, sinewy tannins and classic Soria
acidity, balance and freshness. 2024-32

Dominio de Es Viñas Viejas de Soria Cosecha 2018

96 (14.5%)
The common theme between the 25 parcels that make up this wine, apart from the fact that
they are all in the Atauta Valley, is limestone soils and it shows in the remarkable freshness
of what is a big and powerful wine. Fermented with 30% whole bunches and blended with
5% Albillo, it's a richly oaked, youthful red with serious tannins and flavours of aniseed,
blackberry and wild thyme. Ambitious stuff that will develop complexity with time in bottle.
2024-32

Dominio del Aguila Reserva 2017

96 (14%)
Produced in what Jorge Monzón calls the "tragic", frost-hit 2017 vintage, when yields were
down 85%, this shows that, in the right hands, what survived was often very good indeed.
Marrying Tinto Fino with 5% Monastrell and 2% Albillo Mayor, all of it aged in old wood,
this is herbal, chalky and intense, with stem ginger and wild strawberry flavours, fine
tannins and impressive length. 2022-29

Page 08

Dominio de Pingus Flor de Pingus Cosecha 2018

96 (14.5%)
Peter Sisseck did a green harvest in his Flor de Pingus vineyards in 2018 to reduce the crop
in what was often an abundant year. But the result is still a very graceful, scented expression
of these La Horra vines, with no sign of over concentration. Benefiting from the reduction
in new oak to 25% in recent years and the addition of 2% Garnacha for the first time, this is
detailed, fresh and appealingly pure with silky tannins, succulent summer berry fruit and
the palate length that's a feature of the Dane's winemaking style. 2022-28

Hermanos Sastre Pesus Selección de Pedro y Jesús Cosecha 2016

96 (14%)
Pesus may not win many friends among environmentalists, such is the weight of its bottle,
but there's no denying the quality of this icon wine. Aged in 200% new wood - 12 months in
one set of barrels and 12 more in another - this old vine cuvée marries Tempranillo with 15%
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and a sprinkling of white grapes. Big, bold and fleshy, with
lots of sweet toasty oak, but there's underlying finesse and balance here. 2023-32

Legaris Legaris Alcubilla de Avellaneda Cosecha 2016

96 (14.5%)
The pick of a brilliant and highly encouraging series of "village" wines from this Codorniu-
owned bodega, Alcubilla de Avellaneda comes from a vineyard at 926 metres in Soria,
Ribera's easternmost zone. Winemaker Jorge Bombín uses new oak barrels followed by a
period in amphoras to produce this intensely fragrant, almost atypical red. Notes of sage,
white pepper and red fruit sweetness are underpinned by acidity here. Stunning. 2021-28

Pago de Carraovejas El Anejón Cosecha 2016

96 (15.5%)
Very different in style from the more powerful 2015 release, although this 2016 still
has 15.5% alcohol, the latest bottling of El Anejón also has a much higher percentage of
Tempranillo, with 4% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon making up the balance. Sourced
from a single parcel on limestone at 850 metres, it's wonderfully floral and fresh, with violet
and black cherry notes, fine new wood and a hint of stony reduction. 2023-35

Pago de los Capellanes El Nogal Reserva 2016

96 (14.5%)
El Nogal comes from a six-hectare farm at 850 metres in Mambrilla on clay and pudding
stone soils and is often among Ribera del Duero's best reds. Easily carrying its new French
oak, this is a delicious expression of what Pepe Hidalgo regards as one the region's greatest
vintages. Elegant, refined and well structured, it's a less powerful wine than the 2015, with
graceful tannins, refreshing acidity and layers of plum and blackberry fruit. 2022-31

Viñedos Alonso del Yerro María de Alonso del Yerro Cosecha 2016
96 (14%)
María combines Tinto Fino from two parcels in Roa: west-facing El Circo on chalky clay soils
and north-facing Violeta on chalky gravels. It's a fitting tribute to the owner of the bodega,
especially in 2016. Aged in new French oak, this fine red has quite a bit in common with top
Bordeaux - structured, scented and built to age, with plum and blackberry fruit, a grassy
undertone and finely integrated oak. 2022-31

Viñedos y Bodegas Áster Finca El Otero Cosecha 2016

96 (15%)
Included in last year's Top 100, but with a higher score in 2020 after an extra year in bottle,
Finca El Otero is the top wine from the La Rioja Alta-owned Áster. Made with grapes grown
on clay and limestone soils in Anguix, it reflects the vivacity of an Atlantic year, with stylishly
integrated new French oak, good structure and depth, mocha, plum, and blackberry fruit and
surprising freshness for a wine with nearly 15.3% alcohol. 2023-31

Alberto y Benito Briego Oyada Cosecha 2011

95 (14.5%)
Fans of mature Ribera del Duero with appealing bottle age and effortless complexity should
get hold of a bottle of this pure Tempranillo from the La Hoyada vineyard at 910 metres in
Fompedraza. Less traditional than some of the Benito Hernández brothers' wines, this is
aged in French oak for 16 months and is floral, youthful and focused with classic páramo
acidity and tangy black fruit. 2022-26

Bodegas Arzuaga Navarro Gran Arzuaga Gran Reserva 2014

95 (14%)
Reflecting the cooler conditions of the 2014 vintage in Ribera del Duero, this is a beautifully
complex wine that's beginning to develop tertiary aromas and flavours in bottle. Aged for
five years in new French oak, it's a very harmonious blend of Tinto Fino with 5% Cabernet
Sauvignon and Merlot. Savoury, spicy and sweet, with filigree tannins and a long, tapering
finish. 2022-29

Bodegas Félix Callejo Majuelos de Callejo Cosecha 2018

95 (14.5%)
Majuelos is made with grapes grown on gravel soils between 870 and 890 metres in Sotillo
de la Ribera, just below the páramo. Aged in new wood, it's a wine that benefits from very
low yields and is correspondingly dense, dark and concentrated. The underlying freshness is
a delight, as are the noble, refined tannins. Blackberry and wild herb notes combine on the
palate. 2023-33

Bodegas Ismael Arroyo Valsotillo VS 40th Anniversary

95 Cosecha 2016
(14.5%)
Not many wineries in Ribera del Duero have racked up 40 vintages and this is a very stylish
tribute to founder Ismael Arroyo. Made with Tinto Fino from 100-year-old vines in Sotillo de
la Ribera, it's appealingly complex and balsamic with savoury, tobacco pouch notes, sculpted
tannins and chalky acidity. Herbal, minty and long on the palate. 2021-26

Bodegas Valtravieso Vendimia Seleccionada Cosecha 2018

95 (14.5%)
Ricardo Velasco is making some fantastic wines at Valtravieso at the moment, typified by the
quality of this blend of Tinto Fino with 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot from high-
altitude Piñel de Arriba. Graphite and cut grass aromas segue into a fresh, nuanced palate
with cassis and red berry flavours and a lingering, chalky finish. Ribera del Duero meets
Bordeaux. 2022-30

Bodegas y Viñedos Gallego Zapatero Yotuel Finca La Nava

95 Cosecha 2016
(14.5%)
This small family owned winery in Anguix is making increasingly impressive wines with
the help of consultant oenologist Béquer Prieto. La Nava is a 0.8-hectare parcel that faces
north and produces very low yields from a small-berried French clone of Tinto Fino. Fine,
savoury and racy, this has wonderful focus and precision with a core of sweet plum and wild
strawberry fruit and savoury tannins. 2021-28

Bodegas y Viñedos Gallego Zapatero Yotuel Finca San Miguel

95 Cosecha 2012
(14.5%)
One of a series of outstanding single vineyard wines from this Anguix-based operation, Finca
San Miguel comes from a 0.65-hectare plot that was planted in 1925. Showing the freshness
of its northerly exposure, it has plenty of underlying concentration and structure, with layers
of dark plum and damson fruit, tangy acidity and sweetly integrated 35% new oak. You'd
never guess this is eight years old. 2021-32

Conde de San Cristóbal Reserva Especial 2018

95 (14%)
San Cristobal's Reserva Especial is made with Tinto Fino from its oldest vines, all located in
the La Arenosa plot and planted in 2001, which is dominated by heavier clay soils. Opulent
and rich, with layered tannins, lots of dark bramble, liquorice and blackberry fruit and a
patina of stylish, aromatic oak. A bodega that is improving fast. 2023-32

Díaz Bayo 20 Meses En Barrica Reserva 2016

95 (14%)
Remote vineyards at 900 metres in Fuentelcésped are the source of this bush vine cuvée of
Tinto Fino and 3% Albillo. Showing the freshness and zip of a more marginal, limestone site,
it's focused, tangy and aromatic with subtle oak and red cherry and bramble flavours and
impressive palate length. 2021-26

Dominio Basconcillos Viña Magna Reserva 2016

95 (15%)
It's worth a trip to Dominio de Basconcillos in Gumiel de Izán just for the view from one of
Ribera's highest sites. Marrying Tinto Fino with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot, it's
a richly oaked, well-balanced cuvée from an excellent vintage, with less tannin and power
than the 2015, a core of fresh acidity and flavours of cassis, black cherry and sweet vanilla
spice. 2023-31

Dominio de Cair Cruz del Pendón Cosecha 2015

95 (14.5%)
Juan Luis Cañas sources his top wine from a 1.15-hectare bush vine parcel in La Aguilera,
planted in 1941 and 1947 at 840 metres. Different in style to his Rioja wines, which tend
to show more oak in their youth, this is floral and refined, with a hint of stony reduction,
succulent red berry fruit, real zip and energy and some gentle oak spices. 2021-28

Dominio del Aguila Peñas Aladas Gran Reserva 2014

95 (14%)
Peñas Aladas is a 3.5-hectare plot in La Aguilera from which Jorge Monzón selects the very
best barrels each year. It's an extreme site - one of the coldest in Burgos, at it happens - that
ripens late. Fermented with 100% whole bunches, the resulting wine is something of an
extreme style, with high acidity, fine tannins, plum and red cherry fruit, a green, stemmy
undertone and intense minerality and focus. 2022-29

Legaris Moradillo de Roa Cosecha 2016

95 (15%)
Now into its second vintage, Legaris' collection of village wines has taken the bodega to a
new level, confirming the talent of Jorge Bombín. The vines here are comparatively young at
around 20 years, but they're planted in a special site at 973 metres. Rich and concentrated for
a 2016, yet not lacking in freshness by any means, it has rich, savoury dark berry fruit, lots of
spice and sweet oak and a backbone of tannin. 2022-30

Viñedos y Bodegas García Figuero Milagros de Figuero

95 Cosecha 2016
(15%)
A step up on the already impressive 2015 - a reflection of the vintage rather than a shift in
winemaking style - this bush-vine Tinto Fino is from cooler north, east and west-facing
vineyards between 800 and 820 metres on the southern side of the village. Fresh and
perfumed, it has filigree tannins, crunchy acidity, violet and green herb undertones and very
subtle oak integration. 2022-30

Viñedos y Bodegas García Figuero Tinto Figuero Viñas Viejas

95 Cosecha 2017
(14.5%)
The Figuero family only use fruit from La Horra to make this wine, all of it from vines that
are over 60 years' old and located between 820 and 830 metres on the way towards Anguix.
Aged in new French wood, this is smooth, glossy and very well balanced, with some ferrous
grip, black cherry and plum fruit, stylish tannins and no evidence of the uneven ripening that
some bodegas experienced in 2017. 2022-30

Alión Cosecha 2017

94 (15%)
Always produced as a pan-Ribera cuvée, with 50% of the grapes bought from growers, Alión
sources fruit from Anguix, La Aguilera, La Horra, Moradillo, Nava and Padilla as well as
parent company Vega Sicilia. 2017 was challenging as a vintage, but the crop was only down
15% overall. Aged in 72% new wood, 10% of which was American to add some sweetness in a
dry year. Youthful, perfumed and sweet, with flavours of blackberry and black cherry, firmish
tannins, a sprinkling of dried herbs and a long, refreshing finish. 2022-30

Bodega Tierra Aranda Vendimia Seleccionada Cosecha 2017

94 (14%)
The quality of this varietal Tempranillo is all the more impressive given that it was made
at a co-operative in Aranda de Duero. It's something of a traditional style, with ageing in
new American oak, but the wine is stylish and well balanced, which was not easy in 2017.
Textured and smooth, with floral top notes and a core of sweet black fruit. 2021-26

Bodegas Ismael Arroyo Valsotillo Reserva 2016

94 (14.5%)
Named after one of the pioneers of the Ribera del Duero Denominación de Origen, Ismael
Arroyo makes impressive wines from its vineyards in high-altitude Sotillo de la Ribera. Aged
in French and American oak, this is a focused, refreshing style showing stony minerality,
blackberry pastille flavours, racy acidity and fine-boned tannins. 2021-28

Bodegas Monteabellón Finca La Blanquera Cosecha 2016

94 (14%)
Created as a tribute to the founder of the winery, Finca La Blanquera comes from the estate's
most elevated vineyard, which is also correspondingly high in limestone content, as it name
suggests. Fresh and saline, this has tangy acidity, graceful tannins and succulent raspberry
and bramble fruit. Its Burgundy-shaped bottle alludes to the finesse of the wine. 2022-28

Bodegas Valdaya Valdaya Cosecha 2018

94 (14.5%)
Marta Ramos ad Miguel Fisac are two young oenologists who are making some of the best
wines in Ribera right now and are fast acquiring an international reputation. In price terms,
this is the middle of three Valdaya releases, produced from old vines on sandy soils in high-
altitude Baños de Valdearodos. Picked early for freshness, it's part of the region's new wave,
with scented black cherry and wild strawberry fruit, gentle tannins and vivid acidity. 2022-28

Bodegas Valduero 6 Años Reserva Premium Reserva 2012

94 (14%)
The six years' ageing that this excellent wine undergoes are divided equally between barrel
and bottle. Made from bush vines that produce very small bunches, this shows the structure
and elegance that are hallmarks of the Valduero style. Still youthful after nearly a decade, it
saw no oak ageing, allowing the savoury, spicy, yet refreshing flavours to express themselves.
2021-27

Bodegas Vizcarra Celia Cosecha 2016

94 (14.5%)
Celia is named after Juan Carlos Vizcarra's daughter, who is set to join the bodega after her
oenology studies are completed. Sourced from three mid-slope plots on different soil types
at 850 metres, this shows the concentration and depth of its 80-year-old vines, with subtle
reduction, layers of dark berry fruit and hints of liquorice and coffee bean oak. Needs time.
2023-31

Conde de San Cristóbal 880m Cosecha 2018

94 (14.5%)
No prizes for guessing how high the vineyards are here. Sourced from old, north-facing
terraces above the Duero River on soils that combine stones, clay, sand and limestone, this
is evidence of the impact of consultant Xavier Ausàs in his first vintage. Framed by 33% new
wood, it has scented blackberry and raspberry fruit and good focus and depth combined with
cool elegance and textured tannins. 2023-28

Díaz Bayo Nuestro 28 Meses Petit Vega Cosecha 2017

94 (14%)
I'm a huge fan of the wines that Isaac Fernández Montaña produces from Díaz Bayo's high
altitude vineyards in Fuentelcésped. Intense, concentrated yet refreshing at the same time,
this has impressive depth, chalky minerality, a core of black cherry and liquorice flavours
and stylish, coffee bean oak. 2023-31

Dominio de Atauta Reserva 2017

94 (15%)
"Twenty-five terroirs in a bottle" is how winemaker Jaime Suárez describes this delicious
Tinto Fino from pre-phylloxera vines grown between 920 and 1000 metres in Soria's Atauta
Valley. Limestone is the common thread here and it shows in the freshness and poise of the
wine. Fresh, elegant and perfumed, with scents of thyme and lavender, racy minerality and
nuanced 20% new wood. Typical of the eastern Ribera style. 2021-29

Dominio del Pidio Cosecha 2018

94 (14%)
Dominio del Pidio is all sourced from very old vineyards in Quintana del Pidio and always
includes 5% of co-planted Albillo Mayor. Less structured than the wines from sister winery
Cillar de Silos, this sees no new wood and is fermented with around 10% whole bunches.
Fresh and youthful, it has sweet raspberry and bramble fruit, tangy acidity and fine-grained
tannins. 2022-28

Hacienda Monasterio Cosecha 2018

94 (15%)
Unusual in Ribera del Duero for being a blend of Tinto Fino with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon,
8% Merlot and 2% Malbec, this comparatively large blend hails from an 80-hectare vineyard
that faces south at 750 metres. Picked early in a warm site, it's smooth, rich and scented, with
sweet vanilla spice, a leafy undertone, wild herb and mulberry flavours and a chalky frisson
of acidity. The 20% new wood is very deftly handled. 2022-28

Hermanos Sastre Pago de Santa Cruz Gran Reserva 2014

94 (14.5%)
Pago de Santa Cruz is located, like all of Jesús Sastre's vineyards, in the famous village of
La Horra and is a 75-year-old parcel at 814 metres on clay and limestone soils. Exhibiting
the freshness and balance that are so typical of the 2014 vintage, with less power and full-
throttle flavours than some of his wines. Lightly wooded, balsamic and finely wrought, with
some spice and sweetness from a mix of older French and American oak. 2021-26

La Loba Cosecha 2017

94 (14%)
Ana Carazo's bijou operation in Matanza de Soria is well worth tracking down, as her wines
are among the best in the sub region and are improving with every vintage. This comes from
red clay soils at 960 metres and is floral, textured, refined and well balanced, with good
underlying structure and tannin and the racy acidity that's so typical of Ribera's eastern
border. 2022-27

Lagar de Proventus TR3SMANO Cosecha 2016

94 (14.5%)
Lagar de Proventus is an impressive three-way collaboration that includes Fernando Remírez
de Ganuza from Rioja and the winemaker Pedro Aibar, using fruit from vineyards on both
sides of the Duero River to produce a very stylish pan-Ribera blend. Floral, refined and deftly
wooded, with notes of vanilla and coffee bean, lively acidity and sweet red berry fruit.

M. Chapoutier España Dominio del Soto Crianza 2017

94 (14.5%)
The maverick Rhône producer Michel Chapoutier may not spend much time in Spain, but his
talent and high standards certainly influence the quality of the wines made at Dominio del
Soto. Now into its second vintage, this organically farmed Tinto Fino is wonderfully savoury
and complex, showing understated oak, notes of wild mountain herbs and a thrilling mineral
core. 2022-29

Valdemonjas Los Tres Dones Cosecha 2018

94 (14.5%)
Los Tres Dones marries Tinto Fino from the Moyanos' best vineyards in Quintanilla de
Arriba and La Horra, so has a little more grip than some of their wines. Showing the
influence of Italian consultant Luca D'Attoma, it has firmer tannins, assertive one-third new
wood, structured dark berry fruit and a sweet, slightly balsamic finish. 2024-30

Viñedos Alonso del Yerro Alonso del Yerro Cosecha 2017

94 (14%)
There was no bottling of María de Alonso del Yerro in frost-affected 2017, so all of the estate's
fruit was used to produce this wine, which was definitely to its benefit. Yields were very
low at 10 hectolitres per hectare, but this is not over-concentrated in the slightest. Stylishly
wooded in 15% new French oak, it's smooth, refreshing and refined with notes of cinnamon
spice and liquorice and bramble and blackberry fruit. 2022-29

Aalto Bodegas y Viñedos Aalto PS Cosecha 2018

93 (15%)
Blended across the region, but with a focus on the villages of La Horra, La Aguilera and
Moradillo, this is a ripe, plush sumptuously oaked Tinto Fino from Antonio Moral, with
malolactic fermentation in new French and 10% American wood. Glossy, smooth and at the
riper end of the spectrum, it has dark fig and blackberry fruit with mocha and cinnamon
spice and a hint of good reduction hinting at further ageing potential in bottle. 2024-30

Aalto Bodegas y Viñedos Aalto Cosecha 2018

93 (15%)
Unusual among the top wines of Ribera del Duero for being a blend of nine different villages
in Burgos and Valladolid, Aalto comes from 30 growers as well as the bodega's own grapes.
Rich, smooth and complex, it is aged in 50% new French and American oak and has classic
notes of wild Mediterranean herbs, youthful tannins, fig, blackberry and fruitcake flavours
and enough freshness and acidity for balance. 2023-30

Avelino Vegas Áureo Cosecha 2017

(14.5%)
93
Stylishly packaged and impressively well balanced, Áureo is a bush-vine Tinto Fino from
50-year-old vines in Moradillo and Quemada. It's a comparatively modern style that's
entirely aged in new French oak, but isn't overwhelmed by it. Glossy, yet refreshing,
this has mocha oak, stony freshness and layers of ripe, textured black fruits. 2023-30

Avelino Vegas 100 Aniversario Cosecha 2016

93 (14.9%)
This superb single-vineyard Tinto Fino hails from six 80-year-old bush vine plots in La
Aguilera between 840 and 870 metres on sand, loam and limestone soils and reflects the
quality of its terroir. Serious, dense, sappy and refined, with sweet vanilla oak, very good
underlying structure and plenty of freshness, poise and acidity. Will reward cellaring.

93 (14.5%)
Three different villages in isolated, high-altitude Soria - Matanza, Villalvaro and Quintanilla
des Tres Barrios - supply the grapes for Bertrand Sourdais' top wine under the Antídoto
label. Dense, compact and deeply coloured, it shows the depth of its 100-year-old vine
sources, with emphatic tannins, 43% new wood, lots of extract and focus, layers of damson
and back cherry fruit and the acidity of its terroir. Needs time. 2024-30

Bodegas Arzuaga Navarro Arzuaga Reserva Especial 2015

93 (14.5%)
Low-yielding bush vines on clay-limestone soils provide the grapes for Arzuaga Navarro's
Reserva Especial, nearly all of which comes from Burgos. Blending Tinto Fino with 3%
Albillo Mayor, it has sweet vanilla and mocha flavours from new French oak, dense, youthful
bramble and blackberry fruit, glossy tannins and the structure, power and depth to age
further in bottle. 2023-30

Bodegas Arzuaga Navarro Reserva 2016

93 (14.5%)
The bodega may be based in Valladolid, but this delicious Reserva is almost entirely sourced
from old vineyards in Burgos. Marrying Tinto Fino with 4% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1%
Merlot, this is very subtly wooded, showing good structure and concentration, fine tannins,
dark cherry and blackberry fruit and the freshness and balance of the best 2016s. 2022-30

Bodegas Bohórquez Cuvée Especial Cosecha 2011

93 (15%)
Jerezano Javier Bohórquez sources this wine from 37-year-old vineyards in Pesquera, some
of which are as high as 900 metres. Combining Tinto Fino with 14% Cabernet Sauvignon and
8% Merlot, it's a very well balanced cuvée showing limestone influenced freshness, top notes
of graphite and green herbs, toasty new oak and a complex, balsamic finish. 2021-27

Bodegas Félix Callejo Finca Valdelroble Cosecha 2018

93 (14.5%)
Now into only its second vintage, Valderoble is a single vineyard wine from the páramo above
Sotillo de la Ribera, located at what was once a pretty marginal 930 metres. Showing classic
limestone notes, it's focused, refreshing and chiselled with subtle 50% new wood, pure red
berry fruit and beautifully judged tannins. 2022-30

Bodegas Hnos. Pérez Pascuas Viña Pedrosa Reserva 2017

93 (14.5%)
We are still tasting the wines that were made by José-Manuel Pérez Ovejas at Pérez Pascuas
before he left the bodega, but that's not a problem given how talented he is. This comes
from 50-year-old bush vines in Pedrosa de Duero and is typically dense, compact and
focused, with 50% new French and American oak, damson and blackberry fruit and a green
undertone that's a feature of many Ribera wines in 2017. 2025-32

Bodegas La Horra Corimbo I Reserva 2015

93 (14.5%)
Bodegas La Horra is the Ribera del Duero outpost of top Rioja winery Roda and this
certainly has something in common with the wines from its sister bodega to the north, with
malolactic in barrel and a combination of French and 20% American wood. High toned,
savoury and sweet, with tobacco pouch and kitchen spice aromas and tannins that assert
themselves on the finish. 2022-27

93 (14%)
Cesár Maté and Marta Castrillo's wines are among the hidden gems of Ribera del Duero,
deliberately picked earlier in cool Tubilla del Lago to produce a more elegant style. This is
a tasty cuvée of Tinto Fino with 7% Garnacha and 5% Albillo Mayor from 24 parcels over
910 metres, all of which are 100 years' old or more. Subtle, refined and vibrant with classic
mountain freshness and red berry, black cherry and wild herb flavours. 2022-30

Bodegas Monteabellón Finca Matambres Cosecha 2016

93 (14%)
Isaac Fernández, nephew of the legendary Mariano García of Vega Sicilia fame, is the
consultant here, so it’s no surprise that the wines are so good. Made with fruit from
vineyards at 800 metres in Nava de Roa, with clay and limestone soils, it's scented, elegant
and well balanced, showing fine tannins, subtle French and 20% American wood and bright
red berry fruit. 2021-26

Bodegas Navarro Balbas Nabal Crianza 2015

93 (14.5%)
This is a comparatively new bodega in the high part of Burgos, having produced its first wine
in 2014. Described by winemaker Óscar Navarro as an "Old World style", the Nabal Crianza
is made with old-vine Tempranillo and sees a combination of French and 30% American
wood. Refreshing and detailed, with red fruits and zesty acidity embellished by oak, it tastes
more like a 2014 than a 2015. 2021-28

Bodegas Navarro Balbás Nabal Selección de la Familia

93 Reserva 2015
(14.5%)
The Navarro Balbás family's top wine is a refined expression of the generally concentrated
2015 vintage, all sourced from 70-year-old vineyards at 880 metres in Gumiel de Izán and
picked a little later for "structure", according to Óscar Navarro. Aged in new French oak for
24 months, it's a winning combination of the weight of a warmer year and the freshness of a
high zone, showing lovely texture and zip and filigree tannins. 2021-27

Bodegas Pascual Buró Vendimia Seleccionada Cosecha 2017

93 (15%)
High-altitude Fuentelcésped on the southern side of the Duero River is the source of this
scented, stylish, deeply coloured Tempranillo from 60-year-old vines. The third in an
impressive run of vintages under this label, the 2017 has notes of clove and pepper spice,
sappy berry fruit and lovely balance and palate length. Appealingly light on its feet. 2022-27

Bodegas Tamaral Finca Velia Cosecha 2016

93 (14%)
Finca Velia is an old-vine cuvée from parcels at 900 metres in Pesquera de Duero. Aged in
new French barrels, it's an ambitious red that exhibits all that is best about the 2016 vintage
when yields weren't too high. Spicy, floral and sweetly oaked, with a green, almost leafy
undertone, good freshness and a balsamic twist on the finish. 2021-28

Bodegas Trus Punto Geodésico Cosecha 2018

93 (14.5%)
Definitely the pick of the current Trus range, this comes from various "geodisic points"
(whatever they are) in Baños de Valdearodos, La Aguilera, Moradillo de Roa and Peñaranda
between 880 and 950 metres. Serious, sappy, refreshing and deeply coloured, with toasty
French and American oak, tangy acidity and the structure and freshness to age well in bottle.

93 (14%)
Labelled as "En 2 Maderas", this pure Tempranillo comes from 40-year-old vines in the Las
Negras parcel at over 800 metres. Aged in a 70/30 combination of French and American
oak - the two woods - this floral, fresh and mineral, with red fruit intensity, some clove and
vanilla spice and a fresh, chalky finish. Subtle, nuanced and well judged. 2021-27

Bodegas Vizcarra Torralvo Cosecha 2017

93 (14.5%)
Torralvo has what Juan Carlos Vizcarra calls the most "Riberalidad" (Ribera-ness is the
closest translation) of his reds and hails from a 68-year-old vineyard that faces north on
sand and gravel soils in Mambrilla de Castrejón. Floral, refreshing, yet well structured, with
notes of vanilla, blackberry and orange peel and sinewy tannins. Better balanced than many
2017s. 2022-31

Cillar de Silos Torresilo Cosecha 2018

93 (14.5%)
Óscar Aragón uses fruit from 60 different old-vine parcels in Quintana del Pidio and La
Aguilera to produce, this intense, darkly coloured Tinto Fino, made in a modern style with
50% new wood and malolactic in barrel. Blackberry, anise and mocha flavours are freshened
and supported by the acidity of high-altitude grapes. Still young, but will age well. 2022-28

Dehesa de los Canónigos Luis Sanz Busto Gran Reserva 2010

93 (14.5%)
There aren't many 2010s left on the market, which is a shame given how great the vintage
was, in spite of the frost. This is the top wine from Dehesa de los Canónigos, last made in
2001 and it's a mature delight that will continue to evolve for another five years or more.
Savoury, complex and refined, with silky tannins, remarkable vivacity and freshness and
sweet, balsamic fruit. 2021-26

Dominio de Atauta Llanos del Almendro Reserva 2014

93 (14.5%)
One of five single parcel wines from a first rank Soria winery, Llanos del Almendro's
1.39-hectares are made up of 19 micro-parcels on a north-facing terrace at 940 metres. The
tannins have emerged since I tasted this a year ago, but there is still plenty of supporting
stuffing and concentration, with red cherry and mulberry fruit, some clove spice and the
tangy acidity of its cool site. 2021-24

Dominio Fournier Reserva 2016

93 (14.5%)
After some ups and downs in recent years, it's good to see Dominio Fournier back on form
producing wines as good as the 2016 Reserva. This finely judged Tinto Fino hails from
alluvial soils between Roa and La Horra. Chalky and bright, it has lots of perfume, granular
tannins, herbal blackberry and red cherry fruit and distinguished oak. 2021-28

Familia Fernández Rivera Tinto Pesquera Reserva 2016

93 (14%)
Alejandro Fernández may no longer be involved with the bodega that he created, but the
winery seems to be doing well without him. If anything, the wines are back on form. This
comes from 40-year-old vines in Pesquera de Duero and is an appealingly traditional style,
with 24 months in American wood adding some sweet spices to the smooth, textured, glossy
blackberry and mulberry fruit. 2022-26

93 (15%)
Montecastro occupies a high-altitude moorland site in Castrillo de Duero and is very
different in style from stable mate Hacienda Monasterio, which is picked two weeks earlier.
Made from Tinto Fino and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, it's fresh, focused and very restrained,
with blueberry and cassis fruit, stylish 100% new wood and a chalky, refreshing finish.
2022-28

Hermanos Sastre Regina Vides Cosecha 2017

93 (14.5%)
First made back in 1996, Regina Vides is a proudly modern style of Ribera del Duero from
three parcels over 90 years' old in La Horra, two on clay and limestone soils, the third on
river stones. Savoury, dense and just a little animal, this does malolactic and subsequent
ageing in 100% new oak and has lashings of tannin, power and sumptuous blackberry and
dark cherry fruit. Needs more time in bottle. 2024-30

Magna Vides Cosecha 2018

93 (14%)
"We're looking for the expression of a north-facing site," says Pablo Arranz about this very
old vine blend of Tinto Fino and 5% Albillo. Savoury, spicy and a little funky, this has extra
structure from partial whole bunch fermentation, as well as added stems, notes of wild
mountain herbs and a thread of cool, focused minerality. Intriguing stuff from this exciting
boutique producer. 2021-27

Montebaco Parcela Cara Norte Cosecha 2018

93 (14.5%)
New to me in last year's Top 100, this has confirmed its quality in 2018. A varietal
Tempranillo from a north-facing site at 900 metres on the Finca Monte Alto, it's for people
who value precision and freshness over power in their Ribera del Dueros, showing crunchy
black cherry fruit, silky tannins, refreshing acidity and a twist of orange zest. 2022-28

Pago de Carraovejas Cuesta de las Liebres Cosecha 2015

93 (15.5%)
I always have a slight preference for stable mate El Anejón and its limestone soils, but Cuesta
de las Liebres is an impressive wine too. This shows the heat of the vintage, although the high
percentage of clay in the soils certainly helped to mitigate its effect. Made with 100% Tinto
Fino aged in 50% new French oak for 24 months, it's a rich, heady, sumptuous style with
mulberry, fig and wood smoke notes and a lift of volatility. 2023-32

Pago de los Capellanes Pago de los Capellanes El Picón

93 Cosecha 2016
(14.5%)
El Picón is a bush vine parcel of 80-year-old Tinto del País located right next to the winery
and has been made as a stand-alone wine since 1998. Rich, dense and layered, this reflects
the vineyard's characteristically low yields. Smoky, intense and assertively wooded, it has
flavours of mocha and chocolate, ripe tannins and layers of bramble, black cherry and sweet
spices. 2023-32

Sei Solo Bodegas y Viñedos Sei Solo Cosecha 2018

93 (15%)
Sei Solo source this top red from two parcels - Barroso and Acos - in the celebrated village of
La Horra, aged between 60 and 90 years' old. It's a rich, almost ferrous style with plenty of
grip and concentration, understated oak sweetness from 600-litre barrels and the focus and
freshness of the 2018 vintage, provided the yields were kept low, as they were here. 2023-30

Valdemonjas Abrí Las Alas Cosecha 2017

93 (14%)
The frosts in 2017 didn't do as much damage in La Horra as they did at Valdemonjas' home
vineyard in Quintanilla de Arriba, so yields were only cut in half here. This old-vine cuvée is
dense, dark and powerful, with damson and liquorice flavours, sturdy tannins and a core of
acidity. Needs more time in bottle, but that's often the case with this 0.5-hectare parcel.
2024-32

Valdemonjas El Patio Cosecha 2019

93 (13.8%)
El Patio is only sold in magnums, but that won't be a problem if you have a few friends
around. Made without sulphur dioxide, it's one of Ribera's comparatively few natural wines,
with fermentation and ageing in concrete eggs. Sappy, zesty, youthful and concentrated, with
juicy bramble and raspberry fruit and some extra texture from the retention of a portion of
stems. 2021-24

Valdemonjas Entre Palabras Cosecha 2018

93 (14.5%)
Alejandro Moyano uses a variety of parcels on his 7.11-hectare estate in Quintanilla de
Arriba, all of them on limestone soils, to produce this pure Tinto Fino. Aged in larger and
older barrels, 20% of them American and the rest French, this has the classic balance and
tension of a cooler vintage, with the fine tannins that are a feature of the Valdemonjas style,
bramble and wild strawberry fruit and crunchy acidity. 2022-26

Whites
Bodegas Félix Callejo El Lebrero Cosecha 2019
93 (14%)
El Lebrero is one of the best Albillo Mayors in Ribera del Duero, so it's good to see it released
under the Denominación de Origen's banner, rather than as Vino de la Tierra. Made with
grapes from a high-altitude páramo vineyard at 920 metres, it's a naturally fermented style
that sees ten days of skin contact and fermentation in concrete eggs and new 500-litre
barrels. Aromas of white flowers segue into a palate with flavours of peach, citrus, aniseed
and vanilla spice, complemented by impressive texture and a lingering finish. 2021-25

93 (13.5%)
Taking advantage of the new white Ribera del Duero category - it was previously sold as a
Vino de la Tierra - Óscar Aragón's pure Albillo Mayor is all about fruit rather than oak, with
white flower and fennel aromas, pear and citrus fruit and a salty, refreshing, tapering finish.
High altitude winemaking of real character. 2021-24
