The Helping Art of Clinical Nursing

Ernestine Wiedenbach has made a significant contribution to the nursing

profession and the healthcare sector as a whole. The helping art of clinical
nursing is a paradigm and theory influenced by Ida Orlando's works, which states
that it is the nurse's role to identify a patient's needs. Without a competent
nursing practice, I believe it is difficult to determine and satisfy our clients' needs.
It was expressed in her theory that in order to do so, nurses must have the skill of
determining what the patients' needs for help which is through observation. I
agree with this because I believe nurses must be extremely vigilant in order to
begin developing a nursing care plan. As they perceive or monitor their patient's
health progress, it allows them to observe the behavior, study the symptoms
displayed, learn if there is a feeling of discomfort and as well as knowing the
cause, and finally, find a solution so that patients can receive the assistance they
requested from nurses. In addition, it was claimed that the goal of nursing is to
teach nurses how to assess their patients by determining their needs.

There are four main elements in clinical nursing that serves as a guide in
nursing practice. First is philosophy which talks about attitude or a kind of
response to any clinical scenarios, purpose is next to it that pertains to the nurse
wants associated by their actions in able to accomplish something. The third
element is art of nursing, stating that to enhance patient’s health status,
understanding them, creating goals and making it possible through actions are
needed. Lastly is practice that consist of observable nursing actions affected by
beliefs and feelings about meeting the patient’s need for help. Aside from that,
there are also major concepts such as person (a patient that requires nurse
assistance to improve health progress), health which is what must be improved,
nursing is a practice of identification of client’s need and last one is environment
which could mean objects, policies, settings, atmosphere and a lot more that
nurses should consider as they give their services. In conclusion, the theory of
Ernestine Wiedenbach is more on the focus of improving nurses’ ability. I think
this is important and helpful because performance of nurses has a great impact
on patient’s health condition.

The Modeling and Role Modeling Theory

The Modeling and Role Modeling Theory of nursing is created by Mary

Ann Anne P. Swain together with Helen Erickson and Evelyn M. Tomlin. This was
developed with the support of a lot concepts such as Theory of Cognitive
Development, Maslow’s Theory of Hierarchy of Need, Erikson’s Theory of
Psychosocial Stages and Selye and Lazarus’s General Adaptation Syndrome. All
of this result to having this theory which accepts the fact that each patient has its
uniqueness and so, this includes their needs. It guides the nurses to understand
the different perception of patients and learn to adapt and embrace it and still
care for the patient for the betterment of health. In addition to that, I am happy to
know that it discusses about the respect that must be given to the patient by
accepting that they are the own master of their body. They are expert when it
comes to what kind of care that’s best for them. In other words, The Modeling
and Role Modeling Theory of nursing serves as a guidance to nursing profession
by discussing the similarities and differences among patients.
Modeling talks about how nurses must develop an image and
understanding to one patient’s perception in life or world. On the other hand,
Role modeling starts to take place whenever nurses plan and carry out it for
patients recognizing their uniqueness or different needs. This theory teaches the
nurses that patients are somewhat similar when it comes to their holism, basic
needs, lifetime development and affiliated individuation. If similarities exist,
differences do as well like inherent endowment, adaptation, mind-body
relationships and self-care. As a student nurse, I think learning this is really
helpful in order to assess each necessity of a patient and to immediately respond
to it. This could be a great assistance as nurses make a nursing care plan to
improve their patient’s health condition. In this way, it’s easier to know any
discomfort, or stress a patient feels and assess the possible factors and find a
solution.

The Humanistic Nursing Theory

As Loretta Zderad and Josephine Paterson holds to the though nursing

education should be founded in experience, they developed this model called
The Humanistic Nursing theory which suggests to improve the nurse’s training. I
kind of agree to her advice in which nurse must focus on enhancing their ability
to relate and interact which is just right. Thinking about it, the only way to know
the scientific and medical background of our clients which are needed as we
create our nursing care plan is to try to get to know them. This is where the
approach of nurse-patient relationship starts which make me happy because this
is really helpful. The former to make it easier to determine factors of
disconformity and make an intervention and for the latter to have an immediate
response whenever they ask for help. As the relationship forms between the two
individuals involved, this could be a pathway in improving one patient’s physical
and mental health. Through this, there would be a give and take commitment
which is a great opportunity to achieve a faster and good recovery.
The nursing dialogue which can be seen inside the circle at the center
talks about the relationship of a nurse and patient or when they join force to
achieve a better health progress result. As part of the nurses’ jobs, they would
have to provide assistance to the patient by being understandable and with the
intention to improve one patient’s health. The essential quality in humanistic
nursing dialogue according to Paterson and Zderad is openness. There are said
to be five phases of the nursing process which are, preparation of the Nurse
knower for coming to know, nurse knowing of the other intuitively, nurse knowing
the other scientifically, nurse complementarily synthesizing known others and
lastly, succession within the nurse from the many to the paradoxical in this stage.
Same with other theories, this also composed of four nursing paradigms. First is
person (viewed as to be valued, respected, nurtured and understood) and the
second one is health (well-being and more-being of a patient). Last two is
environment which refers to the community or the place in which the service is
provided and nursing that is defined as a “lived experience between human
beings” and also takes place whenever patient and nurse engage in a dialogue to
be able to give the fast response to the latter whenever there is a need to.
