Instruction: Answer The Following Questions Correctly!
1. One way to define the meaning of a word is to point to examples in the world of things the word refers
to; these examples are the word’s denotation, or extension. Another component of a word’s meaning is
the list of attributes in our mind that describe the things the word can refer to; this list is the intention of a
word.
a. What is meant by meaning extension?
b. Explain about literal meaning and non-literal meaning, and give the examples!
2. Semantics as a branch of linguistics was mainly concerned with how the ‘meaning’ was conveyed by
the linguistics system consisting of different unit structures like sentence, phrases, words, morphemes
etc. Semantics as a study of meaning, which relates language to the various aspects of non-linguistics
reality, was also of interest to various disciplines such as philosophy, anthropology, psychology,
communication theory etc.
a. Mention and explain seven types of meaning!
b. Why does meaning change?, explain!
3. The two branches of linguistics, semantics and pragmatics, deal with the meaning of language and link
language to the world. Each branch deals with meaning differently; yet, many students of linguistics
confuse the two terms. The only obvious similarity between the two branches is that they both deal with
the meanings of words and sentences but in different ways.
a. Explain the differences between semantics and pragmatics!
b. What are the relationships between semantics and pragmatics?, explain!
4. Most approaches to formal semantics have been driven by this preoccupation. Recent years, however,
have seen the growth of a parallel preoccupation, that of exploring the relation between patterns of
meaning and grammatical structure, leading to the search for a restricted subset of meanings that
interact with the grammatical system of human languages.
a. What is meant by grammatical semantics?, explain!
b. What are meant by sentence semantics and contextual semantics?
5. Metaphor and metonymy are two fundamental opposite poles along which a discourse with human
language is developed. It has been argued that the two poles of similarity and contiguity are
fundamental ones along which the human brain is structured; in the study of human language the two
poles have been called metaphor and metonymy.
a. Explain about the differences between metaphor and simile!
b. What are the differences between metaphor and metonymy?, explain!\
