Experiment No. 2: DETERMINATION OF TOTAL HARDNESS OF WATER

WITH EDTA Observations:
(A) Standardization of the EDTA Solution:
For primary standard solution
Weight of CaCO3 taken = 102 mg
Molarity of primary standard Ca2+ solution = 0.0102 (M) [2 Mark]
Titration Data
Volume of Ca2+ used during standardization titration = 25 mL
Observation Table: [2 Marks]
Sl. No. Initial burette reading Final burette reading Volume of EDTA used
(mL) (mL) (mL)
1 1.0 13.1 12.1
2 14.0 26.1 12.1
3 2.0 14.2 12.2

Concordant reading for the volume of EDTA required (VEDTA) = 12.1 mL Calculations:
[2 Marks]
At the end point of the titration, the equivalents of EDTA and CaCO3 would be equal.
Therefore, Equivalents of EDTA = Equivalents of CaCO3

Since, n-factor for EDTA and CaCO3 is 2, therefore, writing molarity in place of normality is
fine in the below equation.

(Molarity of EDTA) * (Volume of EDTA) = (Molarity of CaCO3) * (Volume of CaCO3)

(MEDTA )*(VEDTA ) = (MCaCO3 )*(VCaCO3 )
n-factor for both EDTA and CaCO3 is 2, so it can be ignored.
Therefore, (MEDTA )*(12.1 mL) = (0.0102 M)*(25 mL)
MEDTA = 0.0211 M

Molarity of provided EDTA solution = 0.0211(M)

(B) Determination of hardness of water sample:

Volume of water sample used = 50 mL
Observation Table: [2 Marks]
Sl. No. Initial burette reading Final burette reading Volume of EDTA used
(mL) (mL) (mL)
1 2.0 7.1 5.1
2 8.0 13.3 5.3
3 1.0 6.1 5.1

Concordant reading for the volume of EDTA required (VEDTA) = 5.1 mL

Calculations for Hardness Determination in ppm: [3 Marks]
As we know,
1000 mL of 1M EDTA ≡ 100 gm CaCO3
Hence, 5.1 mL of 0.0211(M) EDTA ≡ (0.1 x 5.1 x 0.0211) gm CaCO3
≡ 0.010761 gm of CaCO3

Now this 0.010761 gm of CaCO3 was present in 50mL of water which is equivalent to 50g of water
(density of water (  water) as 1gm/mL).
 50 mL water ≡ 50 gm water

Therefore, hardness of water = (0.010761 gm / 50 gm) x (106 ppm)

= 215.22 ppm

Result: [1 Mark]
The hardness of given water sample is 215.22 ppm .
