COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION (CLOSED BOOK)
Course No: BITSF111/ ES C112 Time: 120 min.
Course Title: THERMODYNAMICS Max. Marks: 90

• Answer PART‐A and PART‐B question in respective answer book.

• Assume suitable data wherever necessary
PART –A
Q.1. A heat pump with refrigerant‐134a as the working fluid is used to keep a space
at 25°C by absorbing heat from
geothermal water that enters the
evaporator at 50°C at a rate of 0.065 kg/s
and leaves at 40°C. Refrigerant enters
the evaporator at 20°C with a quality of
15 percent and leaves at the same
pressure as saturated vapor. If the
compressor consumes 1.2 kW of power,
determine a) the mass flow rate of the
refrigerant, b) the rate of heat supply, c)
the COP, and d) the minimum power
input to the compressor for the same
rate of heat supply. Figure Q1
[15]
Q.2 Two streams of R134a are coming from two different compressors. Stream A of mass
flow rate 2kg/s, pressure 1MPa and 100OC (state 1), stream B of 1kg/s with 600kPa and
60OC (state2). After mixing adiabatically the single stream enters water cooled
condenser at pressure 800kPa (state3). In condenser the heat is released to the cooling
water, which enters the condenser at 20OC (state 6) and leaves at 25OC (state 7). There is
a pressure drop of 29kPa in condenser, with R134a is coming out as saturated liquid
(state 4). Now R134a is throttled adiabatically to 20OC (state 5). Find the final pressure
and quality of R134a, also determine the mass flow rate of water required and heat
removed from condenser. Assume there is no heat loss to the surrounding throughout
the process. Neglect change in kinetic energy and potential energy.
[15]
Q.3. A 500 L rigid tank initially contains water at 200OC, 50% liquid and 50% vapour, by
volume. A valve at the bottom of the tank is opened, and saturated liquid water is
slowly withdrawn until the remaining amount of water in the tank becomes half the
total initial mass. Heat transfer takes place such that the temperature in the tank
remains constant. Neglect change in kinetic energy and potential energy.
a) Find the final mass left in the tank (kg).
b) Find the amount of heat transferred to the tank (kJ).
c) Determine the irreversibility (kJ) in the process assuming the heat transfer is
being supplied from a 500 OC source. Ambient is at 25 OC.

PART –B
Q.4 Liquid water at 200 kPa and 20° C is heated in a chamber by mixing it with superheated
steam at 200 kPa and 150° C. Liquid water enters the mixing chamber at a rate of 2.5
kg/s, and the chamber is estimated to lose heat to the surrounding air at 25° C at a rate
of 1200 kJ/min. If the mixture leaves the mixing chamber at 200 kPa and 60° C,
determine a) The mass flow rate of the superheated steam b) The rate of entropy
generation during this mixing process c) the three fluxes of availability (inlet and two
outlets) and d) the irreversibility rate [15]
Q.5 Saturated liquid water at 150OC (state 1) at a rate of 12 kg/s is adiabatically throttled to
300 kPa (state 2). It then enters into a flash chamber, which forms saturated liquid and
saturated vapour at lower pressure of 275 kPa. Saturated liquid at 275 kPa exits (state 3)
from the bottom of the flash chamber and saturated vapor at 275 kPa (state 4) exits from
the top. The vapor stream (state 4) from flash chamber is fed to a steam turbine having
isentropic efficiency of 90% and an exit pressure of 15 kPa (state 5). Assuming steady‐
state operation, no heat transfer with the surroundings and negligible KE and PE. Take
ambient Temperature as 25OC, determine
a) Power output of turbine
b) Exergy destructions rate for entire process
c) Second Law Efficiency
[15]
Q.6 Two supply lines of water, one at 300OC and 3 MPa (state 1) and another at 300OC and
10 MPa (state 2) are entering in an adiabatic mixing chamber and coming out as
saturated steam at 200OC (state 3) at a rate of 2.5 kg/s. Neglect change in kinetic energy
and potential energy. The atmospheric temperature is 25OC. Find
a) The flow rate of inlet streams
b) The exergy at each state
c) The reversible power for this process.
d) The rate of irreversibility for this process.
e) Second law efficiency
