2. Determine the specific volume of nitrogen gas at 10 MPa and 150 K based on (a)
the ideal-gas equation. (b) the generalized compressibility chart. Compare these
results with the experimental value of 0.002388 m3/kg, and determine the error
involved in each case.
3. A mass of 2.4 kg of air at 150 kPa and 12 oC is contained in a gas tight,
frictionless piston cylinder device. The air is now compressed to a final pressure
of 600 kPa. During the process, heat is transferred from the air such that the
temperature inside the cylinder remains constant. Calculate the work input during
this process.
4. A 0.5 m3 rigid tank contains refrigerant 134a initially at 200 kPa and 40 percent
quality. Heat is now transferred to the refrigerant until the pressure reaches 800
kPa. Determine (a) the mass of the refrigerant in the tank and (b) the amount of
heat transferred. Also, show the process on a P-v diagram with respect to
saturation lines.
5. A piston cylinder device contains 5 kg of refrigerant 134a at 800 kPa and 60 oC.
The refrigerant is now cooled at constant pressure until it exists as a liquid at
20oC. Determine the amount of heat loss and show the process on a T-v diagram
with respect to saturation lines.
6. A Carnot heat engine receives 650 kJ of heat from a source of unknown
temperature and rejects 200 kJ of it to a sink at 17 oC. Determine (a) the
temperature of the source and (b) the thermal efficiency of the heat engine.
7. A heat pump is used to heat a house and maintain it at 24 oC. On a winter day
when the outdoor air temperature is -5oC, the house is estimated to lose heat at a
rate of 80 000 kJ/h. Determine the minimum power required to operate this heat
pump.
8. A 0.5 m3 rigid tank contains refrigerant 134a initially at 200 kPa and 40 percent
quality. Heat is now transferred to the refrigerant from a source at 35oC until the
pressure rises to 400 kPa. Determine (a) the entropy change of the refrigerant, (b)
the entropy change of the heat source, and (c) the total entropy change for this
process.
9. Steam expands in a turbine steadily at a rate of 25 000 kg/h, entering at 8 MPa
and 450oC and leaving at 50 kPa as saturated vapor. If the power generated by the
turbine is 4 MW, determine the rate of entropy generation for this process.
Assume the surrounding medium is at 25oC.
