FINAL EXAM in CHE 322

Problem 1
Water flows through a horizontal coil heated from the outside by a high-temperature flue gases. As it passes
through the coil the water changes state from liquid at 200kPa and 80C to vapor at 100kPa and 125C. Its
entering velocity is 3m/s and its exit velocity is 205m/s. Determine the heat transferred through the coil per unit
mass of water. Read the enthalpies of the inlet and outlet streams from the steam table (~335kJ/kg and
~2,727kJ/kg).
Problem
An adiabatic compressor operating under steady state conditions receives air (ideal gas) at 0.1 MPa and 300K
and discharges at 1MPa. If the flow rate of air thought the compressor is 2 moles per second, determine the
power consumption of the compressor.
Problem 3
Calculate the volume for sulfur hexafluoride at 75C and 15bar by the following equations: a) truncated virial
equation from the generalized Pitzer correlation and b) Redlich/Kwong equation.
Problem 4
Ammonia gas enters the reactor of a nitric acid plant mixed with 25% more dry air than is required for the
complete conversion of the ammonia to nitric oxide and water vapor. If a) the gases enter the reactor at 70C, b)
conversion is 80%, c) no side reactions occur and d) the reactor operates adiabatically, what is the temperature
of the gas leaving the reactor? Assume ideal gases.
Problem 5
A nuclear power plant generates 725 MW; the reactor temperature is 310C and a river with water temperature
of 20C is available.
a) What is the maximum possible thermal efficiency of the plant?
b) What is the minimum rate at which heat must be discarded to the river?
c) If the actual thermal efficiency of the plant is 65% of the maximum, at what rate must heat be discarded
to the river?
d) What is the temperature rise of the river if it has a flow rate of 165m3/s?
Problem 6
A refrigeration system cools a brine from 35C to -15C at a rate of 25kg/s. Heat is discarded to the atmosphere
at a temperature of 30C. The specific heat of the brine is 3.5kJ/kg/C. What is the power requirement if the
thermodynamic efficiency of the system is 0.29?
Problem 7
Liquid isobutene is throttled through a valve from an initial state of 360K and 4,000kPa to a final pressure of
2,000kPa. The specific heat of the liquid isobutene at 360K is 2.78 J/g/K (Hint: Estimates of V and may be
found from Equation 3.72 of our textbook).
a) Briefly discuss throttling process.
b) Estimate the temperature change and the entropy change of the isobutene.
