EXPERIMENT –4: SYNTHESIS AND RECRYSTALLIZATION OF

DIBENZALACETONE

Observations and Results:

Molecular weight of Benzaldehyde = 106.12 g/mol

Molecular weight of Acetone = 58.08 g/mol

Amount of Benzaldehyde taken: 1.98 mL = 2.11 g = 0.019883 moles

Amount of acetone used: 0.72 mL = 0.57 g = 0.0098 moles

[2 Marks]

Weight of the crude product (x): 1.98 g

Weight of the crude product used for recrystallization (y) : 1 g

Weight of recrystallized product from y gram of crude product (z): 0.433 g

Actual/Observed yield (corresponding to x g) is (z/y)*x: 0.85734 g [2 Marks]

Limiting Reagent for yout reaction is Acetone. [2 Marks]

Theoretical yield (show calculations) = No. of moles of the limiting reagent*234.297 g/mole

→ Since every 2 moles of Benzaldehyde reacts with every 1 mole of Acetone giving 1 mole of
Dibenzalacetone, considering the stoichiometry ratios and given data,

→ No. of moles of the limiting reagent = 0.0098 moles

→ Theoritical yield = No. of moles of the limiting reagent × 234.297 g/mole

= 0.0098 x 234.297

= 2.2361 g [2+1=3 Marks]

Percent yield of pure product (show calculations) = (Actual yield/theoretical yield)*100

Actual yield = 0.85734 g [2 Marks]

Theoritical yield = 2.2361 g

Percentage yield of pure product = (Actual yield/Theoritical yield) X 100

= (0.85734/2.2361) X 100

= 38.3409 %
