TIMING CHAIN, REPLACE


1. With vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.

2. Remove fuel injection pump and tappet.

3. Remove righthand fender splash shield.

4. Rotate engine clockwise until fuel injection cam lobe is at


zero lift, using crankshaft pulley bolt, Fig. 1.

5. Remove four stud bolts and fuel injection pump housing.

6. Remove engine front cover.

7. Install camshaft alignment plate in slots on rear of both camshafts.

8. Apply wrench on flats of exhaust camshaft to prevent rotation,


then loosen intake camshaft phaser and
sprocket bolts.

9. Compress timing chain tensioner as follows:

  a. Release and hold ratchet mechanism, using a small pick.

  b. While holding ratchet mechanism in released position, compress


tensioner by pushing timing chain
arm toward tensioner.

  c. Insert a paper clip into hole to retain tensioner.

10. Remove two bolts and timing chain tensioner.

11. Remove two bolts and timing chain guide.

12. Remove timing chain.

13. Reverse procedure to install, note following:

  a. Torque timing chain tensioner bolts


to 89 inch lbs.

  b. Torque sprocket bolt to 53 ft. lbs.

  c. Torque fuel pump housing bolts to 133


inch lbs., then tighten an additional 60°.
