TIMING CHAIN, REPLACE


1. Remove front cover.

2. Rotate crankshaft clockwise and align timing marks on variable


cam timing assemblies, as illustrated in Fig.
1.

3. Install camshaft alignment tool No. 303-1248, or equivalent,


to flats of camshafts, Fig. 2.

4. Remove variable cam timing housing from each cylinder head, Fig. 3.

5. Remove and discard variable cam timing housing seals.

6. Remove primary timing chain tensioner and tensioner arm.

7. Remove lefthand lower primary timing chain guide, then primary


timing chain.

8. Compress secondary timing chain tensioner, then install a suitable


lockpin to retain tensioner in collapsed
position, Figs. 4 and 5.

9. Remove and discard variable cam timing and exhaust camshaft


sprocket bolts.

10. Remove variable cam timing sprocket, secondary timing chain


and exhaust camshaft sprocket as an
assembly.

11. Reverse procedure to install, note following:

  a. Crankshaft must remain in 9 o'clock position until after camshafts


are installed and valve clearance is
inspected, Fig. 6. Failure to do this will result in
severe engine damage.

  b. Assemble variable camshaft timing assembly ensuring that colored


links are aligned with timing
marks, Figs. 7 and 8.

  c. Rotate crankshaft clockwise 60° to TDC position. Crankshaft


key should be at 11 o'clock position,

  d. Install primary timing chain ensuring that colored links are


aligned with timing marks, Fig. 10.

  e. Install variable cam timing control housings and tighten in


sequence, Figs. 11 and 12. Ensure that
dowels of variable cam
timing control assembly housing are fully engaged into cylinder head
before
tightening.
