Direction(8-14): Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions
given. Certain words have been given in bold to help you locate them while
answering some of the questions.
Srinivas Aiyangar and his wife Kamalamma were very happy. Reason ? Birth
of a son who was named Ramanujan. When Ramanujan was only one year old,
his mother took him to Kumbakonam where his father was clerk in a cloth
merchant’s shop. Ramanujan attended different schools. Then he entered the
Town High School in 1898. Ramanujan never went closer to his class fellows. He
never participated in sports. He used to do well in all his subjects but he had a
special love for mathematics.
In 1900, at the age of 13, Ramanujan began to work on mathematics, including
geometric-arithmetic series. In 1902 a turning point came in his life when he
borrowed from a friend a book entitled Synopsis of Elementary Results in Pure
and Applied Mathematics, written by George Shobbidge Carr. This book which
contained nearly 6000 theorems, formulae and mathematical proofs had awakened
the mathematician in Ramanujan. By 1904, he started taking deep interest in
the subject. Ramanujan got first division in mathematics in his matriculation
examination and was awarded the Subramaniyan Scholarship. In 1904, he got
admission in Kumbakonam Government College. Here he spent most of his time
in studying mathematics, at the cost of other subjects. Eventually, he had to lose
the scholarship. He began to feel the pinch of poverty and left college. Now he
was much depressed. Ultimately, he decided o work on mathematics developing
his own ideas without any help and guidance. His source of inspiration continued
to be Carr’s book. Ramanjuan had become so obsessed with mathematics that he
needed 2000 sheets of paper to do his calculations. To earn money for this,
unkempt and unimpressive, he would visit offices showing everybody his frayed
notebooks and telling them that he knew mathematics and could do clerical jobs,
but of no avail. Now he began to pose problems and solve problems in the journal
of the Indian Mathematical Society. After publication of brilliant research paper
on Bernoulli numbers in 1911, he gained recognition for his work.
