1. Observing
Students are asked to observe a descriptive text about animal by paying
attention to the use of present tense, adjectives, and action verbs.
2. Questioning
Guided by teacher, the students are encouraged to construct any questions
dealing with the generic structure, the language features, the social function,
the main idea. (TASK 1)

The students do TASK 2 individually to find the generic structure, the

A. DESCRIPTIVE TEXT
What is descriptive text?
Descriptive text is a text which describes the characteristics of a place, a person, an
animal or a thing.
Social function of descriptive text
Descriptive text has a purpose to explain, describe, or reveal a person, animal, place
or thing.
Generic structure of a descriptive text
- Identification: Identification is the introduction of a person, place, animal or object
that will be described.
- Description: Description is the part of the text which contains a description of
something such as animal, things, place or person by describing its features, forms,
colors, or anything related to what the writer describe.
Language feature of descriptive text
- Specific participants: has a certain object, is not common and unique (only one). For
example: my cat, my dog, etc.
- The use of adjective to clarify the noun. For example: the largest cat species, long
white whiskers, short tail, etc.
- The use of simple present tense: The sentence pattern used is simple present because
it tells the fact of the object described.
- Action verb: verbs that show an activity for example: run, sleep, walk, cut etc
Example of descriptive text
Elephants are the largest animal in the world. They are from Identification
Asia and Africa. They are herbivores. They eat grass, fruit
and branch.
An elephant has a big body with four legs. It has long nose Description
called trunk, large ear and small eyes. It uses the trunk to
take the food. By the ears, they can hear sounds from a
distance about tens kilometer. Its skin is gray, brown and
hairless. It has a short tail. Their habitats is in the forest and
can be found in the zoo. Elephants are strong animals. They
can play football, they are smart and friendly. Now they are a
kind of protect animals because their population remains
little in their habitat.

B. MAIN IDEA
Main idea of a paragraph refers to the main point being discussed in the paragraph.
Example:
Tiger is known as one of the largest cat species. It can reach up to 2.9 m in length
and can weigh up to 300 kg. Tiger is known for its distinctive black and orange stripes. Tigers’
stripes are advantageous for the tiger to camouflage in long grass vegetation.
The main idea of paragraph above is: Tiger is one of the largest cat species.

My Dog
My father bought me a present I’ve wanted for years. It’s a dog. A puppy to be

with white fur along his chest. When I cuddle him, the fur feels soft and fluffy. Dolgy does
not like bones. Every day he eats soft food like steamed rice, fish, or bread. Every morning I
give him milk and bread. When I am at school, Dolgy plays with my rabbit. They get along
well and never fight because Dolgy does not bark a lot. He treats the other animals in our
house gently. He also never chews on shoes. Dolgy is a really sweet and friendly animal.

TIGER
Tigers are the largest felines in the world. Many cultures consider the tiger to be a
symbol of strength and courage. However, because hunting them is also a sign of bravery in
some cultures. Tigers are categorized endangered with no more than 3,200 tigers are left in
the wild.
Tigers have distinctive stripes, which help camouflage them when hunting prey.
Some tigers have orange fur with black stripes; others are black with tan stripes, white with
tan stripes or all white (albino). On average, tigers are 1.5 to 2.9 m long and weigh around 75
to 325 kilograms. The largest tigers, the Siberian, also called Amur, are 3.3 meters long and
weigh 300 kg. The smallest tiger is the Sumatran tiger. They grow to 1.5 to 3.7 m and weigh
around 65 to 305 kg. Tigers also have very long tails, which can add 0.7 to 1.1 m to their
overall length.

ZEBRA
Zebras are a family of mammals and members of the horse family. Zebras are probably
most famous for their distinctive striped coats, which make them quite memorable animals.
The stripes of the zebra have several functions. They distract and confuse predators
because the stripes make it hard to pick out an individual zebra. The stripes also appear to be
unique to each animal and they help to camouflage individual zebras, especially in wooded
areas. Zebras can be found in parts of Africa, mainly in east and southern Africa. They
usually live in treeless grasslands and savanna woodlands. Zebras cannot be found in deserts
and rain forests. Zebras are also held in captivity in zoos and conservation parks in many parts
of the world.
