QFD DEFINITIONS

• QFD is a process – a methodology – for planning products (R.G. Day)

• QFD is a system for product development that converts the Voice of the Customer into
the voice of design, development, and implementation, including measurable, operable,
and controllable action plans. (The QFD Institute)
• “QFD is a cusomer-driven process for planning products…” (Pyzdek)
• “Quality Function Deployment is used to systematically and structurally convert
customer wishes into critical product and process aspects at an early stage.”
(Rampersad)

BACKGROUND

The need for Quality Function Deployment (QFD) was driven by two related objectives:
• To convert the users’ needs (or customers’ demands) for product benefit into
substitute quality characteristics at the design stage
• To deploy the substitute quality characteristics identified at the design stage to the
production activities
If these two objectives were met, the result would be a product designed and produced
that met the users’ needs and customers’ demand for product benefit

ASPEK UTAMA MATRIKS

1. Customer Information
2. Technical Information :
• Something that should be work on to satisfy the
voice
• Measureable
• Global in nature, one that does not imply any
specific design intent
Development of a QFD matrix is a flexible issue
that is dependent of:
• The type and extent of the data
• The type and complexity of the product
• The Team
• Time constraints
• Organizational readiness

The name QFD expresses its true purpose, which is satisfying customers (quality) by
translating their needs into a design and assuring that all organizational units
(function) work together to systematically break down their activities into finer and
finer detail that can be quantified and controlled (deployment)
