People Analytics: Transforming HR Strategy with Data Science

WHO IS THIS PROGRAMME FOR?

The programme is focused on helping HR leaders leverage people analytics to achieve

positive change across organisations , individuals, and society, and chart a vision for the
future. It also helps participants foster the perception of people analytics as an expert
strategic function and decision-enabling service, and not merely as a compliance or
reporting function.
This programme is ideal for:
• Mid-level to senior HR professionals from any industry looking to set up or restructure
the people analytics function to leverage data and solve problems. You will understand
the opportunities and risks of big data and machine learning in HR and quantify and
predict the impact of people on business outcomes

• People/data analytics professionals seeking to expand strategic knowledge of people

analytics and integrate untapped data sources to make business-relevant predictions.
You will discover analytical techniques with which to evaluate a range of internal factors,
such as managerial bench strength, high turnover, skills shortages, appraisal frameworks
and more

• Consultants - HR & Analytics who need the technical skills to provide more innovative
and impactful solutions to their clients. You will understand where people data resides
within an organisation and learn to leverage these resources effectively

• Project Managers who need to optimise and better align their teams and initiatives to
corporate strategy. You will broaden your perspective on the many psychological and
behavioural factors that determine the success or failure of strategic projects

• Directors and Functional heads looking to use people analytics to transform their
workplace and make better staffing decisions

• Employee representatives who want to acquire a more sophisticated understanding of

how big data and artificial intelligence are transforming many aspects of the workplace
No prior programming experience is required. The learning objectives of this programme
are applicable across functions, industries and geographies. From traditionally data-rich
environments such as finance, telecoms and technology, to more nascent applications of
data science in government and the public sector, it is clear that people analytics has
tremendous potential. You will acquire the knowledge and perspective required to
effectively translate these opportunities into tangible results for your organisation.

CASE STUDIES

Google Project Oxygen

One day, Google asked themselves a simple question: ‘Are managers necessary?’. To find the
answer, they ran an experiment with a completely flat organisation, eliminating managers in
engineering in the hope that this would break down barriers to innovation. Did it work? This
case study discusses their approach to the problem and the results. It also complements
learning materials in this programme on how scientific thinking can help your organisation
to address the questions that it most needs answered.

Identifying Top Scientists

A life science company with a new people analytics department wanted to identify the top
performers in R&Ds. The HR team had relatively few quantitative skills but we were able,
using a range of technical and strategic techniques explored in this programme, to
collaboratively uncover flaws in the performance rating system and generate data-driven
insights that changed management practices for the better. Above all, this case study
demonstrates how a people analytics mindset can help HR to secure a permanent seat at the
strategy table.

Performance over Time

A large bank with a mature people analytics team was seeking more innovative ways to
understand the performance of their traders over time. A key barrier was how to leverage the
rich internal datasets while complying with strict internal protocols. We eventually found a
solution from the realm of sports science, but without effective and simultaneous use of ‘soft
skills’, our highly technical solution would never have left the drawing board. This case study
describes a pathfinder project, executed in challenging circumstances, that inspired an
otherwise risk-averse organisation to take their people analytics function to the next level.

Working from Home

With the recent rise in home and remote working globally, new opportunities are emerging
for organisations to better understand the diverse set of factors influencing productivity.
This case study from a large Chinese travel agency presents the results of an academic
experiment into home working practices and explores the implications for people strategy.
