WRITING LESSON 07
MIXED CHARTS – MIXED TREND CHARTS
WT1 – TOPIC 07
The graphs below show the percentage of adults accessing the internet in the
United Kingdom between January 2001 and February 2006, and the percentage of
households with various kinds of internet connections during part of the same period.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make
comparisons where relevant.

I. Analysing the task and writing the introduction

Read the task and answer the following questions.
1. What type of chart/graph they are?
2. What does each chart/graph show?
3. What is the timescale for each chart/graph?
4. Is there another way to express the same timescale?
Use the answers from above to write your own introduction.
Useful vocabulary and grammar
- show = demonstrate = give information about
- adults accessing the internet = adults who had access to the internet. = adults who used the
internet.

II. Identifying main features for the Overview.

1. What is the overall trend for the percentage of adults with access to the internet?
2. Did the three types of internet connection undergo the same or different trend?
3. Which type of internet connection was the most popular? Did it remain its leading
position over the period?
Write your own overview from the answers above. Use the following structure:
Overall, what stands out from the bar chart is that....................................... Another noticeable
point is that ....

Important note 01:

You should write 2 sentences.
- Sentence 01: main feature for the first chart
- Sentence 02: main feature for the second graph (try to include both trend and comparison)

Important note 02:

It is advisable to combine the Introduction and the Overview into one paragraph, even though
this is largely a matter of personal preference.

III. Organization of the main bodies

When there are two charts/graphs, unless both describes the same subjects, it is advisable to
report them separately in two body paragraphs.

Main body 01 Main body 02

Sentence 01: Introduce the chart and report
Sentence 01: Describe the figure for any
the first point. type throughout the period.
Sentence 02: describe trend until Feb 05.
Sentence 02: Describe the figures for
Sentence 03: describe the trend until the
narrowband/broadband in April 2003. Make
end of the period. some comparisons!
Sentence 03: Was the trend for narrowband
*Do you know why we should focus on Feb similar to/different from that for broadband?
05? Sentence 04: Due to such changes, what
happened in February 2005?
[Sentence 05]: Which type of connection
was more popular in the end of the period?

IV. Useful language: How to describe trend:

CYCLE 23 – LESSON 07
Read the two following examples:
1. From January 2001 to February 2006, the proportion of adults accessing the internet rose
steadily every year from approximately 46% to about 62%.
2. There was a steady rise in the proportion of adults accessing the internet, from roughly
46% in January 2001 to 62% in February 2006.

a) What is the phrase used to describe trend in sentence 1?

b) What is the phrase used to describe trend in sentence 2?
 You should use a combination of (V+ADV) or (ADJ+N)
c) Find three adverbs that mean the same. Why should we use them?
d) Can we write a sentence like this: “From January 2001 to February 2006, adults
accessing the internet rose steadily every year from approximately 46% to about
62%.”?
 You have to use a meaningful combination of Subject and Verb. (i.e. the subject should be
something that can increase/decrease)

V. Useful language: Comparative language.

Let’s take a look at another graph.

Overall, the graph shows new graduates in Ontario

managed to find more jobs as French teachers than
as English teachers over the same period. In
addition, the employment rate of both jobs saw
significant variations, with that of French teachers
constantly falling throughout the period surveyed.
At the beginning of the period, teachers of both
languages had approximately a 70 % success rate in
finding jobs, although French teachers were slightly
less successful than English teachers. The following
year, recruitment for both categories fell by
approximately 15% to 55 %.
However, in 2003, teachers of French began to be
more successful at finding employment than their
English teaching colleagues. Their recruitment rate
rose to nearly 70%, where it stabilised, with minor
variations, until 2007 when it rose again to just
under 75%.

CYCLE 23 – LESSON 07
On the other hand, the employment of new
graduates as English teachers decreased sharply to
40% in 2003. During the following two years, the
number acquiring jobs rose slightly to 44% in 2005
before falling to just over 25% in 2007.

WRITING LESSON 07 – MODEL REPORTS

WT1 – TOPIC 07 - SAMPLE ESSAY BAND 8.0+

(Introduction) The bar chart illustrates the percentage of UK adults who used the
Internet between January 2001 and February 2006, and the line graph shows changes in the
types of household internet connection between April 2003 and July 2005. (Overview)
Overall, it is of note that increasingly more adults used the internet, and broadband
connections replaced narrowband ones to become the most popular type of connection.

(Body paragraph 01) From January 2001 to February 2006, the proportion of adults
accessing the internet rose steadily every year from about 46% to about 62%. The rate of
increase was steady over the first three years with an around 5-percent growth per year,
slowed down in 2004, and accelerated again to reach a high of 63% in 2005.

(Body paragraph 02) In April 2003, 49% of UK households had access to the internet,
and this figure then increased slightly and steadily to about 56% in July 2015. Despite some
fluctuations, there was a substantial fall in the popularity of narrowband connections, from
about 40% to about 25%, and a corresponding increase in the use of broadband ones, from
about 8% to about 32%. The gap between the two types of connections was the largest in
April 2003 when about 40% of households installed narrowband connections, which was
quadruple the figure for broadband lines. This gap then steadily diminished until February
2005 when the figure for the latter started to overtake that for the former.
