Ethanol Dilutions

EtOH = ethanol

Concentration1 x Volume1 = Concentration2 x Volume2

C1V1 = C2V2
V2 = final volume

start: 95% EtOH = C1 (190 proof ethanol = 95% EtOH)

goal: 70% EtOH = C2

dilute with tap water

measure with graduated cylindar

on Excel spreadsheet in folder Langerhans Protocols --> EthanolDilutionProtocol.xlsx

enter numbers in green cells to get output in orange cells:

in this table: enter C1, V1, and C2 to get V2 and water

(for when you have a specific starting volume of EtOH)
C1 V1 (L) C2 V2 (L) add water (L):
0.95 4.0 0.70 5.43 1.43
0.95 3.0 0.70 4.07 1.07
0.95 2.0 0.70 2.71 0.71

in this table: enter C1, C2, and V2 to get V1 and water

(for when you want a specific ending volume of EtOH)
C1 V1 (L) C2 V2 (L) add water (L):
0.95 5.89 0.70 8.0 2.11
0.95 4.42 0.70 6.0 1.58
0.95 0.74 0.70 1.0 0.26
