Lesson 30

InteGRATING TECHNOLOGy In Lesson PLANNING

Learning all the intricacies of technology that could help improve the teaching-learning
process will be useless unless the ideas will be put up in a learning plan. In the learning plan, all
the concepts and skills which the learners have gone through in all the lessons in this book will
be put to proper perspective.

In this lesson, the learners will reflect on learning plans that feature the integration of
technology. Specifically, at the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to:

• determine ways on how to successfully integrate technology in planning lessons; and

• prepare a detailed learning plan in the field of specialization or area of interest.

Musser (2019) stated that teachers often express a certain level of frustration over how to
best integrate technology into their lesson plans, claiming that it is not that teachers do not want
to use technology, or that they do not understand how to use a given app or service, but that
teachers are not sure of how to best utilize the technology within the context of the lesson.

Moreover, Musser (2019) offers steps in integrating technology in the lesson, viz:

1. Identify the teaching strategy. Different technologies fit better in different teaching
contexts. The technology should not dictate the way in which a lesson is taught, rather
the technology should support the strategy.

2. Identify key components of success. Criteria of success may include engaging

delivery of content, a means of keeping students focused or on-task, some type of
formative assessment, and note-taking strategies.

3. Find the best technology tool for the goals. In this step, Chapter 5 of this book would
be much helpful.

Technology integration is similar to planning a curriculum unit. The main differences are
how the students acquire the knowledge and skills, how they demonstrate and apply the
knowledge and skills, and how learning will be assessed or evaluated. In addition to the skills and
knowledge, consideration must also be given to the technology skills students need to learn
(www.technokids.com).

The website www.technokids.com presented four steps in the technology integration lesson
planning process, namely:

1. Examine curriculum documents. This is selecting the topic and identifying learning
objectives in the subject.

2. Determine knowledge and skills. This is determining the students’ background

knowledge and existing technology skills, deciding on how students will acquire new
knowledge and skills and gathering resources required to achieve the instructional
goals.

3. Select a technology product to apply learning. This is choosing a technology-based

product for students to create, outlining the content it will contain, selecting the
software programs, and listing the technology skills required to complete the task.
4. Select a method of assessment and criteria for evaluation. This is determining the
method of assessment and setting the criteria to evaluate the technology product with
a focus upon content, quality of information, layout and design, and technology skills
demonstrated.

Technology integration planning in basic education

DepEd Order 42 s 2016 Policy Guidelines on Daily Lesson Preparation for the K to 12 Basic
Education Program stipulates that ICT integration in teaching and learning involves all activities
and processes with the use of technology that will help promote learning and enhance the abilities
and skills of both learners and teachers (DepEd, 2016).

The same DepEd Order stated that teachers can integrate the use of technology into
different parts of a lesson. With the use of ICTs, teachers can plan learning opportunities that allow
learners to access, organize, and process information; create and develop products; and
communicate and collaborate with others. ICT supports the delivery of various instructional
strategies and methods, including the opportunity to apply differentiated instruction.

In the DepEd Order, the parts of the learning log/plan are: (1) Objectives, (2) Content, (3)
Learning Resources, (4) Procedures, (5) Remarks, and (6) Reflection.

The objectives of the lesson describe what the learners can do after the lesson. The
objectives are in consonance with the content and performance standards and competencies
indicated in the curriculum guide of each subject. In a plan integrating technology, the objectives
follow the digital taxonomy of Bloom (see Lesson 11). Setting the objectives of the lesson are
essential components of the instructional design models like Gagne’s Nine Events, ASSURE, and
ADDIE (see Lessons 12 to 14).

The content of the lesson can be browsed in the curriculum guides of the different subjects.
In planning technology integration in terms of content, there is a need to be guided by the TPACK
framework (see Lesson 9). There are particular technologies and pedagogies which are
appropriate for certain content areas or topics.

The learning resources are the references and other learning resources that the teacher use
to deliver the lessons. This part also includes the supplies, equipment, tools, and other non-print
materials needed for the lesson. For the learning resources, there is a need to review the lessons
learned on the various types of resources – digital, conventional, and the portals and websites
where the ideas for a particular subject can be taken (see Lessons 16 to 18).

The procedures in a lesson plan give the details of the activities that the teacher undergo to
ensure the attainment of the objectives of the lesson. There are many ways to carry the procedure,
depending on the method or strategy used by the teacher. The parts of the procedure may follow
any of the instructional design models like ASSURE, ADDIE, Gagne’s or Merrill’s. For a quick look
on these instructional design models, Chapter 4 can be reviewed. An essential part of the
procedures is assessing the learners – be it formative or summative. To integrate technology in
assessment, there is a need to review Chapter 6.

The remarks and reflection parts give opportunities to the teacher to assess the whole
instructional process. The lessons on the instructional design models like ASSURE and ADDIE
could help in doing integration in this part.

EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION PLAN*

Course Code GE 9
Course Title Life and Works of Rizal
Course Description The course is designed to expose students to the life and works of Dr.
Jose Rizal to help them choose life philosophies, values, virtues, and life
goals they will embrace both as a private person and as a citizen. The
course will examine the socio-economic-political and historical contexts
that scaffold the life and works of Rizal and identify the lessons that can
be drawn from their lives that are applicable in contemporary times.
Learning 1. trace the birth, childhood, and death of Rizal highlighting his
Outcomes works and achievements
2. analyze sample literary works of Rizal
3. discuss the plots of Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo
4. identify and examine lessons from Rizal’s life that can be related
to the present times.

Unit Objectives/ Key At the end of the unit, the learners are expected to:
Understanding 1. identify the women who were associated with Rizal; and
2. explore the characteristics of these women
Topic The Women in Rizal’s Life
Week & Duration Week 8 – Three (3) hours, Two (2) meetings
