ECO-LITERACY
Ecological literacy - (also
referred to as ecoliteracy) is the
ability to understand the natural
systems that make life on earth
possible.
WHAT IS AN
ECOLITERATE PERSON?
An ecoliterate person is prepared to be
an effective member of sustainable
society, with well-rounded abilities of
head, heart, hands, and spirit,
comprising an organic understanding
of the world and participatory action
within and with the environment.
ECO-LITERACY AND
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

According to Fritjof Capra, "In the coming

decades, the survival of humanity will depend
on our ecological literacy – our ability to
understand the basic principles of ecology
and to live accordingly."
Others have reiterated the urgent
importance of ecological literacy in
today's world, where young people are
faced with escalating environmental
challenges, including climate change,
depletion of resources, and
environmentally linked illnesses.
THE SEVEN
ENVIRONMENTAL
PRINCIPLES
1.) Nature knows best. This principle is the
most basic and in fact encompasses all the
others.

2.) All forms of life are important. Each living

things plays a fundamental role in nature.
3.) Everything is connected to everything else.
This principle is best exemplified by the
concept of the ecosystem.

4.) Everything changes. It is said that the only

permanent thing is change. As a general
classification, change may be linear, cyclical
or random.
5.) Everything must go somewhere. All
materials in the ecosystem are continually
recycled and used over.

6.) Ours is a finite earth. Everything that we

need is provided by nature in abundance –
food, water, energy, minerals and air.
7.) Nature is beautiful and we are
stewards of God’s creation. This
principle is inherent in all religious and
tribal beliefs. Teachings of Christianity,
Buddhism, and Islam enjoin everyone
to respect all life and the order of
nature.
