Reflection

Traditionally, literacy has been defined as a set of skills that enable a person to read and write
effectively so that they can communicate their thoughts to other people. Today, many factors will
influence the types of literacies students will need as they progress through their education,
including developments in technology, greater access to education and changes in socioeconomic
trends.

GLOBAL, CULTURAL AND MULTICULTURAL LITERACY

As a student and a future teacher, it is important for me to think about how global, cultural, and
multicultural literacies will be essential in the 21st-century classroom. It is important for us
students to develop a broad understanding of the world to succeed in a globalized world that
demands people to be flexible, adaptable, and responsive to different contexts. (Western
Governors University) These literacies are useful in school, the workplace as well as life in
general and help us prepare to live, study, and work in a culturally diverse society. The skills
learned in these literacies are valuable to us as we develop communication and problem-solving
skills that will benefit us throughout our lives. By developing these skills at an early age, we are
better equipped to cope with the challenges of a multicultural society and become more
accepting of other cultures.

SOCIAL LITERACY

Social literacy is important to be well-rounded and understand the world around us. It is the
ability to understand and engage with society, culture, and politics. It encompasses our ability to
interact with others and address social issues in a mature and thoughtful manner. This includes
our ability to communicate clearly and persuasively as well as the ability to engage in
constructive dialogue. There are several benefits to social literacy such as helping to prevent
discrimination and promote inclusion. It also helps us to develop empathy and compassion for
others which is important for helping us get along with one another. It can be complex and
difficult to understand so it is important that we provide students with opportunities to develop
this skill during their schooling, as future teachers. Personally, I have found it helpful to
participate in activities that enhance my social literacy skills such as participating in community
service projects or joining a club or organization on campus. These experiences have helped me
to gain confidence and develop my own unique perspective on various issues facing our society
today. In addition to having an active role in developing these critical skills, we also need to
encourage students to be active in raising awareness of important issues in our society through
advocacies. When given the opportunity, students can use their voice to influence the decisions
being made in our society which I believe is a vital part of social literacy development.

ECOLITERACY

In addition to social literacy, it is important to have a strong understanding of ecology and the
environment in which we live. I think that one of the best ways to achieve this is through
ecoliteracy. Ecoliteracy can be defined as the ability to recognize the importance of
environmental issues and the steps that can be taken to protect the natural environment. It can
also refer to our ability to make informed decisions about our impact on the environment. This
knowledge allows us to appreciate the world we live in and to conserve and protect it for future
generations. Unfortunately, many people are not particularly concerned about these issues
because they do not understand them or because they do not think they are relevant to their lives.
However, we need to be more environmentally responsible if we want to preserve the
environment for future generations. We have an obligation to do our part in conserving and
protecting the natural world and we are obligated to encourage others to do the same. As a future
science teacher, I believe that it is important to convey this information to my students so that
they can develop a better understanding of environmental issues and learn how to make
sustainable choices when it comes to the environment. To do this, we need to raise awareness of
these issues and understand why they matter.

Financial literacy is the ability to understand and manage one's finances effectively. As an
aspiring teacher, I understand the importance of having a basic understanding of personal
finance, as we will rely on these skills for our entire life, developing and maintaining a strong
financial position for the future, especially with the stories about money and loans surrounding
teachers.

FINANCIAL LITERACY is an important topic that deserves attention from students to have the
knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about their finances as it is essential for the
development of lifelong financial competence. It helps us to create a budget, invest, save for
retirement, and protect ourselves from financial fraud which is crucial to our future financial
security. Unfortunately, many students are lacking this important knowledge. With teachers
being role models for our youth, and as would-be teachers, it is our responsibility to provide
them with the knowledge and skills to become financially literate. By teaching them about
financial literacy at a young age, they are better equipped to handle the complexities of managing
money as adults.
