1. TITLE : The Revenant
2. SETTING : 1823-1824, fort brazeu, fort talbot, grand river 3. MAIN CHARACTER & CHARACTERIZATION : Hugh Glass : Strong, brave, caring, persistent, loyal John Fitzgerald : Egoist, rude, greedy 4. PLOT : Rocky Mountain fur company was attacked by the arikara tribe and the company retreated. After that, they gained support from the U.S army along with 400 sioux warriors and attack arikara tribe but ended up with failure. Despite the failure, the company sends out a group led by Captain Henry to continue trapping. The group arrived beside Grand River, they huddled up with no fire to keep them warm. Sudenly, Glass hears a gunshot and he notices that Anderson aiming his rifle toward the shot but Glass knocked it out as Anderson fires, keeping the bullet slamming into Bridger. Everyone worries that the Arikara may have heard the commotion and they prepare for guard duty. Glass is ahead of the group following deer tracks but suddenly he see a bear and shot it. The group hear the shot and run to it only to find Glass’s body in a sorry state and Captain Henry orders to built stretcher so they can carry Glass along with them. After a failed attempt to bring Glass with a strecther, Captain Henry offers to pay 2 men to stay with Glass while he dies. Fitzgerald and Jim Bridger volunteer. Bridger tries to help Glass but intimidated by Fitzgerald. After a few days, Fitzgerald notices a group of Arikara warriors and decides to leave and taking Glass’s gun and supply followed by Bridger. Glass wake up and angry because Fitzgerald and Badger leave him. He crawl toward Fort Brazeu and survives by eating small animals and plants and able to regain his strength. When Glass wants to hunt buffalo, he sees 8 wolfs and swings a torch to make the wolf leave. After Glass regain his strength, he comes across a destroyed Arikara village and finds and old blind woman. He makes her a meal but she dies the next morning. The next morning, Glass approaced by a group of Sioux warriors and their leader brings Glass to a medicine man to heal Glass’s infected wound. The leader then escorts Glass to Fort Brazeu. At Fort Brazeu, Glass meets Kiowa Brazeu. Kiowa introduces him to a group of voyageurs and suggests that Glass accompany them north. On the way to the north, the group killed by Arikara warriors and Glass is forced to travel alone to Fort Union. When Glass arrived at Fort Union, the fort is empty because Fitzgerald and the group left. Before leaving Fort Union, Fitzgerald lie to the group that Glass is dead and he burried Glass under rocks and mark the grave with a cross. Glass quickly realized where Henry and his group headed and he follows the group to Yellowstone. Meanwhile, Henry’s group stopping for supplies at Fort Talbot and Fitzgerald realizes that the man he saw on the river was Glass. Glass hears a cannon explosions and decides to go to Fort Miguel. He bursts into the bunkhouse and find the whole crew gathered but he can’t find Fitzgerald. Instead, he see Bridger and beat him down. Glass grabs his knife and about to stab Bridger but he stop because Bridger didn’t resist. After calming down, he learns that Fitzgerald had stolen pelts from the group and headed to Fort atkinson because he joined the army. Glass headed to Fort Atkinson. He meet with another group and continue his journey with them. On the way to Fort atkinson, Glass’s group attacked by Arikara warriors and all his companion died. Eventually he arrived at Fort Atkinson. At Fort Atkinson, Glass learns that Fitzgerald has joined the army which means that he’ll have to take his claim to the military court rather than settle it with pistol, but he decided to shoot Fitzgerald in the shoulder. Glass is thrown into jail and he’s bailed out by Kiowa. Kiowa tell Glass to embrace his life rather than waste it by going after fitzgerald again. Glass finally accept Kiowa suggestion. 5. Glass finally accept Kiowa suggestion. 6. WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS STORY TO BE READ? WHY OR WHY NOT? Yes, this story is very interesting. At the beginning of the story, the main character was in the brink of death and betrayed by his comrade. He seeks for revenge and through all the trouble to achieve his revenge. In the end of the story, the main character didn’t get his revenge and accept his friend suggestion to embrace his life rather than waste it by revenge.
