Sanders’ inauguration mittens

Gauge: 18 st x 24 r = 10 cm/4 inches in
stockinette

Suggested needles: Size 5 mm (US size 8)
double pointes needles or the size needed to
obtain gauge.

Suggested yarn: Filcolana Peruvian Highland
Wool in the colours:
A chestnut 241
B cinnamon 817
C natural white 101
D chai 364

One skein in each colour.

Abbreviations:
CO = cast on
k = knit
k2tog = knit to sts together
ktbl = knit through back loop
m1l = make 1 left. Left slanted increase. (With left needle pick up the strand between 2 sts by
inserting it from the front to back and k through the back loop.)
m1r = make 1 right. Right slanted increase. With left need pick up the strand between 2 sts by
inserting it from the back to front and k through the front loop.)
p = purl
r = round
ssk = Slip, slip, knit. Left slanted decrease. (Slip 2 sts knitwise one at a time, insert left needle
to the slipped sts and k the sts together through the back loop)
st/sts = stitch/stitches

Size S-M
CO 36 sts in colour A and knit 10 rounds of twisted rib (ktbl, p). Change to colour B and k 1
round. After that follow the diagram up until round 19. On round 19 set aside sts for the
thumb as follows: Right mitten: Put the first 6 sts on stitchholder and co 6 new sts using
backwards loop method. Left mitten: K the first 14 sts of r 19 in the diagram, then put the next
6 sts on stitchholder and co 6 new sts using the backwards loop method. Continue following
the diagram until you have knitted all 45 rounds of the diagram. After that graft the remaining
20 sts together using kitchener stitches. (You can se a tutorial about kitchener stitch in my

Thumb: Put the 6 sts from the stitchholder back on the needles and k these with colour A.
After that you can choose til knit the thumb using just 1 colour, or you can follow the diagram
from r 20. K 12 rounds. The following r is knit like this: (ssk, k2, k2tog) repeat once. Graft the
remaining 8 st together using kitchener stitch.
Weave in all ends.
