A) Introduction to Product Development

1
Q1. Create a set of scatter charts by plotting each of the rows in Exhibit
shown below against the development cost row. For each one, explain why
there is or is not any correlation.

Annual production volume VS Development cost Sales lifetime VS Development cost

Sales Price VS Development cost Number of unique parts VS Development cost

2
Development time VS Development cost Internal development team VS Development cost

External development team VS Development cost Production investment VS Development cost

As we can see all of the dimensions increases when the development cost increase that gives us a
direct relation, except 2 dimensions which is (Annual production volume and sales lifetime) do
not correlate with development cost and they don’t have obvious relationship. And as appeared
from the (production investment, number of unique parts, sales price, and development team
size) scatter charts they indicate strong direct relation, and these may be clarified as follows: first
production investment it increases when the company found a good deal for either equipment or
tooling needs and all of these go in many phases from development to procured which increase
the development cost. For the number of unique parts when the product has many components it
increases the development cost and the cost of collaboration through the groups that carry out
this production effect the cost too. Quality and complexity of the product have a big effect on the
Sales price, and for complex and good quality product you need bigger development team. Lastly
the development budget (which is mainly staff and payroll costs) increases often as team size
(both internal and external) increases.

3
Q2. Estimate what fraction of the price of a pocket calculator is required to
cover the cost of developing the product. To do this you might start by
estimating the information needed to fill out Exhibit above for the pocket
calculator.
Ans:

A strong hand-held calculator could sell 2 million units over a lifespan of 3 years for an existing
electronics company such as Sharp or Hewlett Packard. For one year, the development effort
would include 30 persons, costing $1.5 million plus another $250 K in production equipment.
We have $1.75 M / 2 M units = $0.875 per unit, which may be 5 to 10% of the wholesale price,
to amortize this cost equally over the output period.

Q3. Each of the chapters listed in Exhibit 1-4 presents a method for a portion
of the product development process. For each one, consider what types of
skills and expertise might be required. Can you make an argument for
staffing the development team from start to finish with individuals possessing
all of these skills and areas of expertise?

Ans:

At any point of the generic product development process, it is not difficult to argue that an
interdisciplinary team is useful. Since the many actions of the team are so closely connected
together, it is essential for each member of the team to be mindful of the issues involved with
each of the disciplines.
For example, marketing, industrial design, engineering and manufacturing may all contribute to
and benefit from the joint testing process in the 'identify customer needs' activity.
Similarly, in the whole product line, the principle of design for production applies. The workload
will definitely vary, but some involvement across disciplines appears to be justified in the
process.

4
4) Diagram a process for planning and cooking a family dinner. Does your
process resemble the generic product development process? Is cooking dinner
analogous to a market-pull, technology-push, process-intensive, or
customization process?
Ans:

Check the availability of

Make a plan for cooking Ask your family what they
ingredients
want to eat in the dinner

Organize the place and

Cook the food clean the room for a
Serving the dinner to
family dinner
family members

Since the inputs is converted to outputs, we considered this process as a generic product
development process
Regarding the analogous for the process, it can classified as market-pull since we define what we
need then we get it or technology-push since we check what equipment do we have (oven for
example) then match the equipment with the resources or ingredients to make the dinner or
customization process if you know to make specific kind of a food and you try to make another
kind similar to it or process-intensive if you have one just one equipment and you try to make the
dinner using it.

5) Define a process for finding a job. For what types of endeavors does a well-
defined process enhance performance?
Ans:

1. choose a list of a field you interested (planning)

2. Make a list of the constrains for example (location, salary and uniform working hours)
(planning)
3. Start building your resume by considering the following:
 Make sure you know when to use a CV. (concept development)
 Pick the best CV format. (system-level design)
 Add your contact information the right way. (detail design)
 Start with a CV personal profile (CV summary or CV objective) (detail design)
 List your relevant work experience & key achievements. (detail design)
 Build your CV education section correctly. (detail design)
4. Start searching for job advertisement that satisfied your interested field and constrain.
5. Apply for the job
6. Prepare for the interview
7. Receive the job offer
8. Accept or reject the offer.

A clearly understood process will make you ready for every step and you be known for every
step of the process, especially for those long processes, because of your performance will be
improved.

6
6) Sketch the organization (in some appropriate graphical representation) of a
consulting firm that develops new products for clients on a project-by-project
basis. Assume that the individuals in the firm represent all of the different
functions required to develop a new product. Would this organization most
likely be aligned with functions, be aligned by projects, or be a hybrid?
Ans:

It is most likely matched up by projects since the organization is made up of groups of people
from several different functions, with each group focused on the development of a particular
product

7
7) Is there an analogy between a university and a product development
organization? Is a university a functional, project or hybrid organization?
Give an example of IE department
Ans:

.Yes, there is analogy between a University and a product development organization

 Both have very much characterized timetable during origination: In University when
understudies look for confirmation, the course length is fixed. Similarly, the item
advancement includes timetables which are carefully followed
 The contribution for college is secondary school understudies which have little
information and in item improvement the inception is from an essential thought which is
additionally given solid structure in item life cycle
 There is a very much characterized step in changing over understudies to school
graduates which covers schedule subtleties, preparing plan, assessment and so on. In item
advancement cycle, there are different stages like Idea, Research, Develop, Test, Analyze
and Launch
 The Output of University is graduated researcher which are according to advertise request
and future prerequisite and of item association are last item premise the need of market

University is project organization as:

 Employees of the college are included full time on the undertaking .
 The head of college has full time authority during the period simply like venture pioneer .
 There is open and direct correspondence channel among understudy and resources simply
like venture association.

8) What is the product development organization for students engaged in

projects as part of a product development class?
Ans:

It is clear that a product development organization means the scheme which assist the designers
and also developers in learning together as one team. The connection between the individuals
might be in the form of reporting or forwarding relationships. Moreover, a product developments
organizations would act as a platform which can be used by students who are engaged in the
projects for connecting with the other members who are working in the same projects.

8
9) Is it possible for some members of a product development organization to
be organized functionally, while others are organized by project? If so, which
members of the team would be the most likely candidates for the functional
organization?
Ans:

  .Yes it  is possible

 The team members with strong functional links tend to be part-time participants. Such
as stress analysts, industrial designers, technical writers, model makers and sales people.
 The manufacturing, design and marketing people on the team with ongoing
responsibilities for project work may be linked together by strong project ties, while the
part-time participants may not share those links.

10) Generate 10 opportunities for innovation based on an area of your own

personal passion.
Ans:

My passion is Tablet:
1- Making Tablet more comfortable.
2- Enhance battery life.
3- Longer warranty period.
4- More color options.
5- Less purchase and maintinance cost.
6- Improve it's security.
7- More screen size options.
8- Enhance sound volume and qualty.
9- Make it foldable.
10- Make it harder to resist being broken.

9
Q11) What are the advantages and disadvantages of anonymous voting in the
screening opportunities?
Ans:

The advantage of Initial screening is the quickness, and the goal is to remove any opportunity
that has less potential to add a value. In this step, it is faster because everyone voting
anonymously without hesitating any thing and by his own judgment. Also no one has to justify
anything in this process. The disadvantage of anonymous voting is that in this way any benefit
from the discussion is might be avoided, and in some cases some members have some areas of
.expertise should be shared

Q12) Would consumers make good raters in an opportunity screening

process?
Ans:

Of course, if they are going to be a users. However, sometimes they tend to be unrealistic since
.they are not aware enough about other factors such as, cost, technology and performance

Q13) Could a great opportunity identification process result in a product that

fails in the market?
Ans:

Why not, The market supply and demand can be changing continuously. Also, many constraints
could arise such as, cost changes and strong competitor. So, this is not the final process. It should
.be followed by other process like identifying the costumer needs..etc
