This report talks about the job Vice President of Operation & Finance in the education industry. And the
purpose of the report is to have a deeper knowledge about the job I am interested in through arranging
an interview, conducting a research and analyzing the job’s industry.

Interview:

- Interview findings:
On Tuesday, 5th of October 2021 I interviewed Mr. Hasan Murad, Vice President of Operation &
Finance in Nasser Vocational Training Center through Zoom. The purpose of this interview was
to get to know the job I am interested-in in more depth from someone experienced in that job
and industry. In the interview I got to know about skills, qualifications required and the kind of
responsibilities for such job. Additionally, I got to know about his career and learn from it.

The interview started with the required skills; Mr. Hasan Murad told me that the basic skills
needed such as communication skills are not enough. He said that you will need to have more
complex skills such as strategic problem solving and excellent leadership skills to be able to fit
perfectly in this position. Moreover, skills such as financial planning and reporting and oversight
are as so important to have in this job. As for qualifications, a bachelor’s degree in business
supported by years of experience in the field is required. As for the number of years, it depends
on the institution. Moving on to the responsibilities of Vice President of Operation & Finance.
Being a Vice President of Operation & Finance meaning that you will have to check the
institutions overall financial statements, oversight, direct the work, ensure staff members
receive appropriate training and make long term decisions. All those responsibilities will be
disrupted by work problems such as errors in the financial statements and other problems
related to departments work. Dealing with work related responsibilities and problems in Mr.
Hasan Murad’s words “is all about understanding the situation and applying the right knowledge
in the right place to make sure you end up with the best solution to your problem”. When
talking about Mr. Hasan’s journey to this position, I have gained so much knowledge from it
regarding the way to reach to that position and regarding the industry and the Nasser
Vocational Training Center which I will explain further in my pest analysis. Overall, Mr. Hasan
Murad recommended that I go ahead and start working towards this position as he see’s it as a
promising career and he thinks that the industry will be flourishing economically. (Murad, 2021).

- Research:
In order to understand the job (Vice President of Operation & Finance) and its industry
(Education industry) in more depth, I conducted a research regarding it. The education industry
is not only around students and teachers as the majority of people think. Any role that keeps the
learning institutions running is considered as a part of the education industry and Bahrain’s
education industry is growing quickly (Bahrain EDB, n.d). Being a part of the education industry
requires you to have general important skills. For instance, you have to be highly organized and
be able to work well in a team (BNW, n.d). But qualifications cannot be general on the whole
industry because it depends on your role. When talking specifically about the qualifications and
skills needed to be a Vice President of Operations & Finance, as for qualifications, you must have
at least a bachelor’s degree in business. Some have masters and others even have a Doctorate
or PhDs. As for the required skills, there are a lot but the most important ones are superior
leadership, management and problem solving skills. (Bridgespan Group, n.d). One more
important need for being a Vice President of Operation & Finance is having at least a minimum
number of experience, and as Mr. Hasan Murad stated that this number is set by the institution
(Murad, 2021).

Analysis:

PEST Analysis & the future of the job:

- Political:
From the start of the COVID-19 pandemic the government and the National Medical Taskforce
has been issuing new rules regarding the way of continuing the education process. Those rules
were temporary depending on the COVID-19 status in Bahrain. However, “on the 1 st of July 2021
the National Medical Taskforce for Combatting the Coronavirus announced the traffic light
system. The system consists of 4 levels based on the average percentage of new cases to tests,
in addition to the level of occupancy in intensive care units” (bna, 2021). Therefore, in line with
the COVID-19 alert level traffic light system, the ministry of education has announced the
operational strategy educational institutions in response to decisions issued by the Government

Executive Committee and National Medical Taskforce. (Ministry of Education, 2021). Those
decisions effect the number of staff permitted to go back to work in the institution.

- Economical:
Economic factors have a major role in every industry. One of the main economic factors is the
Value Added Tax (VAT). On the 1st of January 2019 the Value Added Tax of 5% has been applied
in the Kingdom of Bahrain under Decree-Law no. 48. This law had exceptions and the
educational services and related goods are one of them as stated in Decree-Law no. 48 Clause
12 of Article 53 of Bahrain Law “The zero-rate shall apply to the following: The Supply of
educational services and related Goods and Services by kindergartens, pre-primary education,
primary, secondary and higher education institutions” (Ministry of Finance, 2018). Mr. Hasan
Murad said that it is true that educational services and related goods are excluded from the VAT
but the learning institution still needs some non-related goods that will include the 5% VAT to
continue running such as food and stationery. consequently, the institutions expenses will rise.

Another economic factor that can be considered as an opportunity is the growth of the industry.
As mentioned above in the research section; according to Bahrain Economic Development
Board, Bahrain’s education industry is growing quickly (Bahrain EDB, n.d). This is an opportunity
to avoid failure since growth means that the industry is thriving.

- Socio-cultural:
The socio-cultural trends are an important aspect on the educational industry. The use of
internet and social media is a basic living standard in today’s generation. Statistics shows that
Bahrain had a population of 1.72 million in January 2021 and 1.71 million of them were internet
users. Adding to that, social media users were 1.5 million which is equivalent to 87% of the
population. (Kemp, 2021). The new normal has made people highly acquainted. For those
reasons, it is easier to be connected. And as for the education industry, the use of social media
makes it easier for student, academia and administrators to be in touch.

- Technological:

No one can deny that technology is the factor that can change a lot using a little now a days.
Using emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence will help to spur economic growth and
it hold magnificent promises for the development of Bahrain’s society. Additionally, it will help
Bahrain in taking a step forward to achieving the Kingdom’s economic vision 2030. Thus,
Artificial intelligent has contributed to Bahrain’s digital achievements and improved government
services. (Bahrain.bh, n.d). The use of artificial intelligence will really benefit the industry and for
that reason, Nasser Vocational Training Center signed a memorandum of understanding with
Bahrain polytechnic aiming to unite and benefit from the expertise of Bahrain Polytechnic in the
field of vocational and technological training in artificial intelligence (bna, 2021).

Another technology that is applied in the education industry by the university of Bahrain, the
blockchain technology. “The blockchain technology make you achieve greater security and to
verify the academic certificates. This secures the issuance of certified digital certificates that
cannot be faked and can be comfortably shared with employers and universities around the
world (Bahrain.bh, n.d).

- Future of the job:


Based on my research findings, the future of the educational industry and the job Vice President
of Operation & Finance is promising. Statistics shows that between 2018 and 2028, the career is
expected to grow 6% through the 10 years (zippa, 2021). Moreover, Bahrain’s economy
generates up to 8,000 new jobs a year (Bahrain EDB, n.d). Those facts make me confident about
the chosen job and industry and motivate me to work towards them.

Conclusion:

Through this report, I have understood the job that I am interested in and its industry through
conducting the interview, research and the PEST analysis. This process gave the knowledge of how big of
an industry is and the amount of research that needs to be done. Therefore, I think that I need to do
more research just to be clear that I am taking the right path.
