Title of the proposed Addressing Issues Facing ESP in Algerian Universities: A
communication or workshop Pragmatic Proposal
Abstract This presentation aims to assert and promote the importance of
teaching ESP in Algerian universities by suggesting solutions to some
of the most challenging concerns regarding this discipline. By the turn
of the 20TH century, the English language steadfastly became dominant
and widely accepted as the prime means of international
communication. A relatively new field of research, ESP secured a spot
in every academic curricular as an apparent outcome of USA cultural
hegemony, which has only been confirmed and disseminated owing to
the tremendous progress in media and transportation technologies.
English is, thus, not a mere carrier of communicational information, but
more importantly, a vessel bearing academic and scientific knowledge
across the globe. It is only natural to consider the mastery of English as
a pressing academic pre-requisite for university students majoring in
various fields. Despite having an academic branch striving to fulfill
such purpose, numerous obstacles hinder the well-needed progress of
ESP, namely, teachers’ training for such course, hourly volume,
interdisciplinary collaboration, as well as ESP syllabi and their practical
aspects.
