Brief description:

This course should focus on more advanced electronic communication principles. The course also
describes the requirements and available technologies of Electronic Communication systems.

Learning Outcome:

By the end of the course the student should have an understanding of the principles of Electronic
Communication.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course unit, the student should be able to:

· Describe the requirements for Electronic Communication

· Describe the Principles of Electronic Communication

Detailed Course Description:

· Information Signals and Modulation: Communication Channel, Analogue signals, Frequency,


Harmonics, Duty cycle, Bandwidth and Spectrum of analogue signals, Effect of noise

Amplitude Modulation; mod index, Single Side Band Modulation, Ring modulator, Frequency
Modulation, bandwidth, Demodulation of AM, SSB and FM. [14hoursL, 4hoursP]

· Transmission Lines: Equivalent Circuit of a Transmission Line, Characteristics; transmission line


losses, impedance; phase change, attenuation, standing waves, Coaxial cables, Parallel lines; twisted
pair, colour code wire pairs, Effect of interference. Optic fiber: construction and types, Light
propagation, Attenuation characteristics, light sources and Detection [8hoursL, 4hoursP]

· Digital Line Transmission: Forms of digital signals; unipolar, bipolar, Nyiquist-Shanon, sampling
theory, PAM, quantization, PCM, Line Codes; Manchester code, AMI, HDB-3, Error Control coding
CRC-4. [8hoursL, 4hoursP]

· Digital Modulation: ASK, FSK, PSK and QPSK, MSK, QAM, CDMT. [12hoursL, 4 hoursP]

· Noise Concepts: Noise; white noise, interference, Sources of Noise, Noise temperature, Effect
of noise on analogue and digital signals, S/N Ratio, Noise Measurement. [8hoursL, 4hoursP]
Mode of Delivery

Course should be taught by lectures, presentations, practical laboratory exercises and discussions
