To most of us guitar enthusiasts out there, the “Falling Slowly” Tweet

song has become one of our favorite songs to play on the guitar at social
gatherings or on quiet evenings with our close ones. We’ll share with you
the Falling Slowly lyrics, their meanings and the chords this post, just after
we go into the song’s background a bit more. It was first released into the
world with the movie Once (2007), a musical tale written and directed by
John Carney, set in Dublin (Ireland). Described as a naturalistic drama, the
movies stars the couple of musicians Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova as
two unnamed immigrants in Dublin, working day jobs as a repairman and
flower seller, respectively.

The characters, named just “Guy” and “Girl” in the script, meet on the city’s
streets and connect via the music they compose and play together,
culminating in recording a demo of the songs. The two main characters
obviously also share a flirtation throughout the movie, but just as the song
says, it never amounts to more than just that. The best part about the movie
though, is its outstanding soundtrack, which managed to win it an Academy
Award in 2007 for Best Original Song. So, for everyone here who likes to try
their hand at beautiful songs on their guitar, here is our round-up of the
Falling Slowly lyrics, their meaning and the chords to play it.

Falling Slowly Lyrics

I don’t know you, but I want you
All the more for that
Words fall through me and always fool me
And I can’t react

And games that never amount

To more than they’re meant
Will play themselves out

Take this sinking boat and point it home

We’ve still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice
You’ve made it now

Falling slowly, eyes that know me

And I can’t go back
The moods that take me and erase me
And I’m painted black

Well, you have suffered enough

And warred with yourself
It’s time that you won

Take this sinking boat and point it home

We’ve still got time
Raise your hopeful voice, you have a choice
You’ve made it now

Falling slowly sing your melody

I’ll sing it loud

Falling Slowly – Lyrics Meaning

As you can see – and hear for yourself if you were previously familiar with
this beautiful song – the Falling Slowly lyrics are emotional and eerie. Their
meaning may be a bit hard to grasp at first, but according to Glen Hasard,
the song’s composer, each lyric is about being open and vulnerable to
possibilities, even if you know those possibilities never actually lead to
anything more than illusions. Most of the times, remaining open (and thus
vulnerable) is a struggle, especially when the possibilities are just frames in
one’s mind. Making that effort can bring extra hassle and distress, but it
also makes one’s life richer. To quote a popular saying, it’s better to regret
the things you did than the things you never got a chance (or the courage)
to do.

The beautiful and emotional Falling Slowly lyrics have been inspiring other
musicians to famously cover the song as well. The movie’s main actors
formed a folk band called The Swell Season which sings the song, but
they’re the original authors of it, so it doesn’t really count. But besides
them, the duo formed by Lee Dewyze and Crystal Bowersocks also covers
the song beautifully, as well as Josh Groban on his 2013 album. We should
also give a nod to Kris Allen, who won the 2009 American Idol with a
stunning rendition of Falling Slowly. All in all, it seems that the world feel in
love with “Falling Slowly” ever since Once made it popular, and for good
reason.

Falling Slowly Chords

To play this song on your guitar – and we should warn you it’s a moderate
difficulty song – just follow these detailed instructions uploaded by fellow
guitarist David Ngo here. Our advice is to keep repeating the chords alone
at first until you’re fairly certain you can reproduce them while singing with
your voice as well. Use a soft voice tone to sing the Falling Slowly lyrics
while you play the chords you know well by now, and your company should
be pleasantly surprised by the new addition to your repertoire.
