EXT.

PUB TERRACE- NIGHT

Gael, A young man in his early 20’s, is sitting alone on the

terrace of a pub. He’s reading a book and beside him is a
glass of whiskey. The table is quite large, a table for six.
The terrace is not too big, not too small, and through the
entrance you can catch a glimpse of the pub interior.
Pop/jazz/acoustic/rock music can be heard inside.

A table diagonally across from this one, though fairly close

by, is filled with group of young adults in their early 20’s;
about 6 to 8 people and they are either seated or have
clustered about the table. It is a lively, boisterous group;
laughs, shouts, general gossip emanate from the table.

A young couple enter from the inside of the pub, LESLIE and
SARAH, each holding a drink. Leslie spots Gael.

LESLIE
Well, look who it is.

SARAH
Who?

LESLIE
That fella reading over there. We
were..um.. well friends during
varsity. And then he dropped out
third year. Uh...fuck...I’ve
tried to keep in contact. But...
he just...drifted off the map.
The last time I‘d spoken to him
was about a couple of years ago.

SARAH
What’s his name?

LESLIE
Gael.

SARAH
Ah. Yes, Gael. Would you like to
go over there and say hi?
LESLIE
Yeah... yeah... what the hell.

The two of them walk toward him.

SARAH
Reading a book?

LESLIE
He’s like that...

Upon approaching Gael.

LESLIE
Remember me.

GAEL
Richard. (Stands up). Of
course...of course. How are you?

LESLIE
Good. And yourself?

GAEL
Good. It’s been a long time.

LESLIE
It has...I’m sorry, and this
is....

SARAH
(Extending her hand)Sarah.
(shakes Gael’s hand). Hi

GAEL
Pleasure to meet you. Sit down,
if you will. That’s unless. I’m
sorry. You two probably wanna...

SARAH
No...We’d love to sit for a bit.
I’ve heard all these stories
about you two in varsity.
(directed at Leslie) We could sit
down?

LESLIE
Of course.

Both Sarah and Leslie sit opposite Gael. There is a brief bout
of silence between them all.

LESLIE
So, what have you been doing with
yourself?

GAEL
Nothing much... travelled to
Beirut earlier this year. Though

SARAH
(Interrupting) Beirut. Well
that’s interesting.

GAEL
It really isn’t. And yourselves?

LESLIE
Well, after graduation I found
myself in reinsurance. Been there
ever since. Sarah...

SARAH
Branding.

GAEL
Ah, sounds like a sweet deal.

SARAH
It’s work. There’s not much
sweetness to be found. (beat) So,
anyway, what’s with the book?
Trying to put on that
intellectual, brooding loner type
of vibe.
GAEL
For your information, you’re
absolutely right. Though I
consider myself more of a pseudo-
intellectual, given the fact that
I’m not much of a book reader.
You see, I read up somewhere
about this library that’s also a
cafe somewhere in Italy or some
place. A library cafe where they
also serve you booze. So you can
basically browse through the book
shelves till you find something
you fancy, pick it off, return to
your seat and order a
motherfucking drink. Then you can
dive right into chattering with
fellow intellectual types like
yourself. It’s like Oprah’s book
club, but not fucking Oprah’s
book club. Like I said, it’s
supposedly filled with the
intellectual, leftist, radical
sorts, and the place is dressed
up in this vintage, antiquated
style.

SARAH
Discussing the (tries to
pronounce with a French accent)
“oeuvres” of Kant, Dostoyevsky
and Plath.

GAEL
Really fucking elitist. So I
decided, why not pitch up to a
pub, with a book in hand and
start reading away while enjoying
a glass of whiskey. I’m fucking
bored as shit. And this (holds up
the book) isn’t mine anyway.

SARAH
Very cool man. Not my vibe
though. Definitely not my thing.

LESLIE
Me neither

GAEL
Same, if anything, I fucking hate
those bastards...

SARAH
This seems quite popular.

LESLIE
The noise won’t effect your
concentration?

GAEL
No, I kinda like it.
It’s...reassuring.

A continuous dolly shot as we follow a PRETTY LADY as she

passes the table and makes her way into the pub. We keep
following her, pass tables through the pub. The pub is not too
full, a couple of people here and there. An old, traditional,
vintage type of decor. As we track through the pub, we get a
glimpse of different groups of people, chatting, laughing,
gesturing. As the PRETTY LADY arrives at the bar, the camera
pulls away to a YOUNG COUPLE. We continue to follow them
toward the exit.

As they exit, a young man walks in, RICHARD. He has an

intensity about him. Richard sits at the bar, he is
disconcerted, a bit tense, something is definitely on his
mind. He is attended to by a BARTENDER.

BARTENDER
What would you like?

RICHARD
Get me...get me a double brandy
and coke.

BARTENDER
Don’t I know you?

RICHARD
I don’t think so.

Three girls are sitting to the right of Richard. He stares at

her for some time, his gaze is both intense and slightly
menacing. He speaks to the one closest to him, referred to as
YOUNG WOMAN.

RICHARD
You have a pretty face.

Woman 1 doesn’t catch his question, she moves herself closer.

YOUNG WOMAN
I’m sorry, come again.

RICHARD
You’re lucky. You have a pretty
face, and that’s what makes you
lucky.

YOUNG WOMAN
Um...thanks. You’re very strange.

RICHARD
My name’s Richard. What’s your
name?

YOUNG WOMAN
Jessica

RICHARD
Please to meet you Jessica.

Jessica faces forward nervously, feeling awkward she rolls her

eyes slightly and sips her drink. Richard averts his eyes just
as she had. They simultaneous turn their heads toward each
other, the synchronicity causes embarrassment on both sides.

RICHARD
(Laughing) I’m sorry...um...I am
weird.
JESSICA
That’s okay...so am I. I guess.
Um...would you like to join us,
it’s just me and my two friends.

RICHARD
I don’t know. (looks to the left)

JESSICA
What’s the matter?

RICHARD
(Jerks his head back round)
What’s that?...nothing.

The camera slowly swivels around and meets Sarah walking into
this side of the pub. She is suddenly approached by what looks
like friends of hers. They all embrace and chat for a bit.

EXT. PUB TERRACE- MOMENTS LATER.

Amongst the boisterous group of young people already mentioned

in the beginning, is a young man, DEVIN. He is focused upon.

DEVIN
So, you wanna make believe this
is all fine. You wanna make
yourself into some kind of
leader, yeah? That’s what I tell
him. I couldn’t do it man. I
couldn’t let him think like that.
I was on the brink of going all
befok on him. He starts to foking
tremble.

DEVIN suddenly acknowledges a familiar face in the distance.

Holding up his hand shaped like a gun, he points at someone
off camera. The camera swivels around and rapidly dollies in
on Richard and Gael, still sitting at the same table. They
notice Devin and acknowledge him by a wave and salute, Gael
performing the latter.

GAEL
Who’s that?

RICHARD
Devin.

GAEL
Devin?...ah, Devin. How could I
forget...

BEAT
GAEL
So... How’d you meet Sarah.

LESLIE
During final year. It’s funny, we
shared a few classes, practically
studied the same thing. (beat)
Hope you don’t mind me bringing
this up again. Really, what
happened after first year?

Gael looks around. He spots a BEAUTIFUL YOUNG WOMAN walk past

him. He can’t help but look at her. Dreamlike, slow motion
shot, POV of Gael.

GAEL
(Tepidly) I dunno. I dunno man.
Things tend to get, just a
little...(trying to find the
words) fuck it...I guess I
just...drifted around. (laughing)
I was a ghost.

LESLIE
(Repeating thoughtfully)A ghost.

GAEL
(Smiles) I’m glad to see you
again.

The two of them sit there is silence for a while.

LESLIE
Hey, wanna hear something strange
that happened to me this morning.
I hadn’t slept the night and I
decide to go to the park, this
about six, around about there.
I’m sitting on a bench, the park
is deserted. Not a soul in sight.

EXT: PUBLIC PARK- NIGHT

Leslie is sitting on a park bench, alone as he has already

mentioned. An idyllic scene stands in contrast to the lively
pub. A blank, ominous expression stains his face. He sits
there, alone for a while, looking at apparently nothing.

He is seemingly alone in this almost dreamlike setting. An old

black man walks up and sits himself down next him. The old man
is slow in movement and gives off the persona of being very
humble. He gives Leslie a glance and smiles. Regardless of the
outward gestures, he seems to be holding some emotion back.

OLD MAN
The weather is good. Very good.

The old man cannot control his outward composure. He lowers

his head and covers his face with his hand. He begins to sob.
At first, Leslie ignores him. After while...

LESLIE
Is something the matter?

The old man raises his head.

OLD MAN
My son’s funeral, yesterday. I
travel from KwaMashu.

LESLIE
(genuinely surprised) KwaMashu!
All the way from there.

OLD MAN
Yes. I have not seen my son
in...in...seven years. He came
here for job. Last week (cries)
skelm... gwaza (gestures a
repeated stabbing movement)
here... (we waves his hand across
his face) ubuso, uh, face.

LESLIE
(Shocked) Someone stabbed him in
the face?

CUT back to the PUB TERRACE PRESENT.

GAEL
Well... that was terribly
depressing.

LESLIE
Well. Our conversation didn’t
quite pan out that way. But you
get the gist. I’ve been thinking
about it the whole day.

INT. PUB- MOMENTS LATER.

There are more and more people entering the pub, it’s slowing
filling up to its capacity. It’s also acquiring a chaotic
feeling, as the booze flows through the veins of the young,
people become more and more boisterous, lively.

Pop/rock/jazz music plays in the back around. We go around the

room, prying on peoples conversations, some eccentric, some
out of place, some ordinary. We spot the odd loner, sulking
away by themselves.

Sarah is busy buying a pack of cigarettes at a vendor near the

bar. We pan across revealing her scavenging through her
handbag, retrieves her purse. She takes out a 50 rand note,
slips it into the machine. Richard walks up from behind and
taps her shoulder. She swivels around with a quizzical
expression.

RICHARD
Sarah?
SARAH
(Taken aback, trying to be
polite) Oh, hi. How are you?

RICHARD
I’m good.

SARAH
Sorry, One moment.

Sarah makes her choice of cigarette brand and picks out the
pack as it falls into the retrieving slot. She turns around,
and is surprised by his disappearance. She spots Richard
returning to Jessica. She pans across and spots Leslie at the
bar. She heads over to him.

LESLIE
What took you so long?

SARAH
Bumped into a friend of mine.

Sarah and Leslie walk out onto the terrace and sit down at
their table.

EXT. PUB TERRACE. MOMENTS LATER.

GAEL
Well, I’d better be off.

SARAH
What…no…you don’t have to go.

LESLIE
Yeah, stay for a bit longer.

GAEL
No no no. I should go (gets up)

LESLIE
Well, it was good to see you
again.
SARAH
Aah, well it was nice to meet
you.

GAEL
Real pleasure meeting you.

We follow Gael as makes his way through the pub. the camera
elegantly sway capturing the people as socialise, drink, tell
jokes, laugh, etc...Richard takes Jessica by the hand and
leads her out the pub, we do not follow them. We remain on
Richard. A young woman, 22 or 23 years, amongst a group of
friends catches sight of Richard. She is surprised and happy
to spot Richard. She walks up to him.

CHARLOTTE
Boo!

GAEL
Charlotte?

CHARLOTTE
What are you doing here? You
never go out.

GAEL
I’ve gotta get out once in a
while.

CHARLOTTE
Punk. You never call. I haven’t
seen you in like forever.

Charlotte spots two spare chairs close by. Rapidly Dolly in on

the chairs.

CHARLOTTE
Ooh. Quick.

Charlotte grabs Gael’s hand and the two of them make for the
chairs with haste. They manoeuvre through the crowd and beat
another couple to. Compose themselves.
GAEL
So...What have you been up too?

CHARLOTTE
I’m heading to the states. In
fact I’m leaving Tuesday.

GAEL
(surprised) Oh. What for?

CHARLOTTE
Well I just finished my honours
in Sociology...um... (Jovially)
top of my class.

Gael doesn’t seem happy for her, something in his expression

betrays envy and perturbation.

GAEL
(tepidly, timidly )Well done.

CHARLOTTE
Yeah, thanks.

GAEL
(regains his composure) yeah?
Well, you wanna be a writer or
something. like an author,
academic.

CHARLOTTE
I dunno. Maybe. So what have you
been doing with yourself?

GAEL
Nothing worth mentioning.

CHARLOTTE
Is that so. Embarrassed or
something?

GAEL
Well. I just got back from
Beirut.

CHARLOTTE
Beirut. Hmm. Interesting. How was
that for you?

GAEL
It was okay. It was great.

CHARLOTTE
Alright. And now what?

GAEL
Now?...well. I dunno...so are you
still so perverted.

CHARLOTTE
Perverted? What are going on
about?

GAEL
You loved to talk about rape and
pornography, any kind of sexual
deviance.

CHARLOTTE
(smiles) Me? no. I could never.
And if I’m not mistaken. You
always brought it up. I just
entertained whatever twisted shit
you threw at me. You’re the
pervert.

GAEL
I guess you’re right. (smiles)

EXT. DARK ALLEY- MOMENTS LATER

Our ears pay witness to the grunts and moans of a man and
woman. Though we cannot see through the darkness they are
engulfed in, we can presume they’re doing something of a
sexual nature. After some time, the pleasure induced groans
and moans from the young woman turn sour. Her moans turn into
cries of struggle, of pain. We hear her hurling obscenities at
the young man as she struggles and starts to cry.

Emerging from the darkness is Jessica, running out frantic.

She trembles, crying. Richard finally emerges from the
darkness, on the surface he is unperturbed, nonchalant.
Behind that facade lies disconcertion, anxiety, genuine fear
for his behaviour.

Richard leans against a wall, deep in thought, contemplating,

assessing things. He has a melancholic, brutally sad
expression across his face. He is lost in melancholy.

INT. PUB- MOMENTS LATER

Track Gael as he leaves the toilets and makes his way back to
Charlotte. He sees her conversing with her friends. He decides
to hang back for a while. He dreamily watches her from a
distance, to him she is beautiful. Elegant, dream like CU of
Charlotte represents Richard’s POV. Charlottes catches sight
of Gael. She smiles and signals to him. He remains where he
is. She decides to approach him.

CHARLOTTE
Whatsup? Don’t you wanna come
mingle?

GAEL
They’re your friends.

CHARLOTTE
They’re harmless. They won’t
bite.

GAEL
I’m afraid I might.

Beat.

CHARLOTTE
So then. Have anything
interesting to say. I could
easily move on ya know.
GAEL
Let me think.

CHARLOTTE
You’ve been to Beirut. Tell me a
bit about the place.

GAEL
There’s nothing to tell.

CHARLOTTE
You mean you have nothing.

GAEL
Some call it the Paris of the
East. There’s a restaurant their
entitle Buns and Guns, the place
is dressed up in this militia
style, as a joke. And after
dinner, instead of the customary
mint and you get chewing gum. But
let’s not talk about that.

CHARLOTTE
No, I’m very interested. I would
like to go there myself. The
Paris of the East...okay , so
what do you wanna talk about
then?

GAEL
See that group of friends over
there (points the group behind
him). Well, they’re all talking
about work and their girlfriends.
A couple of girls I happened to
walk past on my way here, they
all were talking about their
friends, their experiences with
friends.

CHARLOTTE
What’s your point?
GAEL
Well, I don’t wanna talk about
those things. I’d rather talk
about the things that really
matter.

CHARLOTTE
What like politics, current
affairs?

GAEL
None of that shit either.
Everyone has their opinion, and
all of it is complete shit. I
don’t wanna talk about work, or
people we know, or
politics...what we’ve done in the
past, what we’re planning to do
in the future. Where we’ve been,
what we’ve accomplished. No, none
of that, just for now.

CHARLOTTE
(repeating) Because none of that
is important.

GAEL
Well, yeah.

CHARLOTTE
Well. You can tell a lot about a
person by what she does for a
living. The friends she has. It’s
important. Things you have to
know.

Gael looks at her intently.

GAEL
Maybe just for now, we can
pretend we’re different people.
We’ve only have a few hours. Do
you really want to waste your
time talking about things that
aren’t very interesting? I could
never bear people talking about
their work, or they’re friends.

CHARLOTTE
I have hilarious stories about my
friends.

GAEL
Sure you do.

CHARLOTTE
Well...since were perverts, let’s
talk about perverted things.

GAEL
Like what?

CHARLOTTE
I dunno. Hmm. I’m too old for
this.

GAEL
Too old.

CHARLOTTE
Yeah. It used to be fun. I dunno
though.

GAEL
All mature like now.

CHARLOTTE
Yeah...no! what am I saying. Fuck
growing up.

Devin, drunk now, stumbles into frame.

DEVIN
(playfully slapping his face).
Gael, how are ya?

GAEL
(smiles) Devin.
Devin moves on, proceeding to the bar, which is still swarming
with people desperate for a drink, the music is blaring, the
place is pretty chaotic. Devin decided to go outside for a
bit.

EXT. OUTSIDE THE MAIN ENTRANCE. MOMENTS LATER.

There are people outside the pub, one of which is Richard with
a cigarette in his mouth. Devin, upon exiting happens to stand
right beside him.

DEVIN
Could you spare a cig?

RICHARD
Sure.

Richard gives him one and lights it up for him. Richard double
takes, he recognises Devin.

RICHARD
I know you

DEVIN
You do?

RICHARD
Yeah, you went out with
whatsername... Suri. Yeah, you
went out with Suri a while back.

DEVIN
Suri?... Me and her were fucking
ages ago. When was it...couple of
years, varsity, yeah. We split up
after graduation...you know her?

RICHARD
(Balefully smiles) You could say
that...you could very well say
that.

DEVIN
Whatcha mean?

RICHARD
This probably won’t matter now.
And why should it, it was such a
long time ago...anyway, while you
were with her, we happened to
have a little thing on the side.
I’d often go to her house and
well...Now maybe you’re thinking
this guys talking shit, well, her
room had blue walls, and there
was this huge bizarre painting of
this grotesque beast cradling a
young sickly man, which a close
friend had painted for her. Well,
maybe you questioning the exact
period of this affair, well I can
assure you, the relationship
between the two of you had become
quite serious, she told me so
herself. There were two
photographs, one of which had the
two of you kissing, another with
just you, the words my love
scribbled on the corner. Ah, we
were interrupted one day by a
phone call, from you, letting
Suri know that you had gone to
visit your mum at the sanatorium.
She had been quite sick. Apart
from the family and her, no one
knew about it. Unfortunately, and
without her knowing, I could hear
the conversation clearly, I was
right next to her. Try as she
might to speak as cautiously and
timidly as possible, I could
still make out what you were
saying... I hope your mum’s well
now, I’m sure she is....but what
happened, with me and Suri you
shouldn’t care of, you had
probably forgotten about her,
she’s nothing now. She assured me
that the relationship wasn’t too
serious, that it was flexible.
Only at the end of it she did
admit that she... that she fucked
up.

Devin has been all the while silent, perturbed, conflicting

emotions running through his affected mind. For a few seconds
it seems as though he cannot grasp the entirety of the
confession.

RICHARD
Sorry mate, I’ve gotta go. (walks
back into the pub).

DEVIN
Wait.

Devin, disconcerted and stupefied by the conversation, follows

Richard into the bar. We follow him as he searches for
Richard, which proves a near impossible task. The camera moves
across the pub, more boisterous and chaotic than before.

A couple are dancing, something that steals Charlotte and

Gael’s attention. They are sharing the table with new people,
and decide to keep to themselves. They watch the couple dance.
Gael glances at Charlotte, she returns the glance. They look
at each other for while.

EXT. PUB TERRACE. MOMENTS LATER.

Sarah and Leslie are also sharing the table with a couple of
strangers and too keep to themselves. The two of them sit in
silence for a while...

SARAH
What are you thinking about?

LESLIE
Nothing. So...

SARAH
(looking around) this place is
awful busy. How about some
traffic control.

LESLIE
There’s more than usual.

SARAH
Maybe we should get out of here.

LESLIE
(sips his drink) I’d rather stay.
I kinda like the noise.

SARAH
We’ve been together a long time.

LESLIE
A Long time?

SARAH
I dunno. You thought I was stupid
back then.

LESLIE
(laughs)No I didn’t.

SARAH
You thought I wasn’t pretty too,
initially, at the beginning, when
we first met, you thought I was
unattractive.

LESLIE
What? Where’s this coming from?

SARAH
What if we had never met? What
kind of girl would you be going
out with right now?

LESLIE
(sarcastically) Someone more
beautiful. Someone smarter.
SARAH
Ah, is that so?

LESLIE
Yeah. Why not.

SARAH
(Sarcastically) I’d marry some
wealthy executive type man. You
know, the ones who take
initiative and are successful in
all endeavours and have a
plethora of wealth to show for it
all.

LESLIE
It shouldn’t be hard to find a
man like that.

SARAH
(Laughs) and if I wasn’t happy
with a man like that, (beat) I’d,
I’d have an affair.

LESLIE
And suppose you have an affair
with me?

SARAH
And fall in love.

LESLIE
Would you leave him?

SARAH
I dunno. Maybe.

They both smile at each other. Sarah takes out a cigarette and
as she takes her lighter she drops it. As she bends over to
pick it up, she notices Gael’s book lying on the seat across
from hers. She gets it.

SARAH
Looky here. Gael forgot his book.

LESLIE
I’m sure we’ll see him again.

Sarah opens it up. Written down on the first page are the
words...

Dear Aneesa
Happy 21st! Love ya with all my
heart.
Monica

SARAH
I can’t believe it.

LESLIE
(Has a look) Aneesa?

SARAH
Stealing books now.

LESLIE
Relax, maybe he borrowed it.

SARAH
Maybe. Who’d lend out a present
from a close friend.

Zoom/dolly into CU of Sarah lighting her cigarette.

EXT. UNKNOWN STREET. SOME UNKNOWN TIME LATER.

GAEL
You know, sometimes I wish I
could go back. If I could go back
I’d do things differently. And if
I’m not thinking about that, I’d
think about the time to come. You
know, think what I might be a
couple years from here.

CHARLOTTE
That’s bullshit
GAEL
Well...

CHARLOTTE
There’s no point. No fucking
point. Just think about what
we’re doing now. We just left a
pub, and now we’re walking
through this street. I’ll be
leaving soon, and since this
might be the last time I ever
see...no fuck that. I’ll see you
again. I’ll definitely see you
again. The world’s too small to
keep us a part.

GAEL
God damn it.

CHARLLOTTE
What.

GAEL
Nothing...

CHARLOTTE
So...what ya thinking.

GAEL
Nothing... Just... What I’ve
missed out on... I’ve thought
about you. You know that. Maybe
too much, I don’t know.

CHARLOTTE
Remember when we went to the
beach. We swam out as far as we
could. Then suddenly you called
out, “what about the sharks”. I
didn’t care, I didn’t care about
the cold or the sharks. You swam
to me, grabbed me and pulled me
under. Did you try and kiss me, I
always thought you tried, and if
it wasn’t for the crushing of the
wave. Maybe it would have been
romantic.

GAEL
I remember.

Charlotte extends her legs out, like a ballerina or dancer.

She raises her hands, elegantly moving them about to he own
rhythm.

CHARLOTTE
Aagh. My hair.

GAEL
You study too hard. And now
you’re losing your hair.

CHARLOTTE
Yeah. God damn. Yeah.

GAEL
Didn’t you want to become a porn
star at one time?

CHARLOTTE
(smiles) what makes you think the
aspiration died out...anyway what
are you doing with yourself.

GAEL
Let’s just forget about
everything. It’s doesn’t matter
who are...or what you’ve done....
fuck everything!

Gael runs to Charlotte, takes a hold of her and starts to

dance with her. Music plays in the background and the two of
them dance to its rhythm. All of a sudden...

CHARLOTTE
Wake up
Match cut of Charlotte with her hands on Gael’s shoulders on
this unknown street with a shot of the two them back at the
PUB. The episode had been a fantasy of Gael’s.

CHARLOTTE
I have to go now. Sorry I can’t
stay longer. Keep in touch, okay?

GAEL
Yeah, of course... Nice seeing
you again.

CHARLOTTE
I should have called.

GAEL
Yeah...you should have.

CHARLOTTE
(Smiles) we’ll see each other
again.

Charlotte leans in to kiss Gael, she leans back again, but

then decides to give him another kiss, this one for a bit
longer than the first. She smiles and walks out. Gael sits at
the table for a bit, contemplating, gathering his thoughts.

EXT. PUB TERRACE. MOMENTS LATER.

Devin is sitting down at a table. He disconcertingly stares

blankly into oblivion. Others around him are all in a state of
ecstasy. He abruptly gets up and knocks YOUNG JOCK’s drink, it
spills all over. Unperturbed by the accident Devin ignores it.
The YOUNG JOCK, annoyed by his blatant indifference pushes
Devin and throws obscenities at him. Devin responds by
violently pushing the YOUNG JOCK back. He is thrust into a
group of people, who are angered by the disturbance.

Devin then takes a glass and smashes against the YOUNG JOCK’S
face. Temporary blinded he throws a bunch of punches into the
air, one of which connects with young man. A group of drunk
men join in the fight. People push and shove each other
around, almost all try desperately to flee the scene. A bottle
is broken, and as the unknown handler turns around with the
broken glass in hand, he inadvertently cuts another’s arm.
Dolly into a young woman’s face as blood is sprayed onto it
from the cut up arm swinging around.

Sarah and Leslie are amongst the many trying to avoid the
fight. Sarah catches sight of Gael’s book still left on the
table

SARAH
Hold on. (She picks up the book,
excited by the danger of it all).

The two of them hop the railing, which many people have
figured is the best escape. The two of them stand in front of
the terrace, away from the violence. They stand there, in awe,
watching the orgy of swinging fists, shoving, flying bottles
and glasses. They are joined by Gael, who has come to see the
commotion. All three of them are standing in a line facing the
terrace.

SARAH/ LESLIE
Gael!/Gael! I thought you left.

GAEL
Bumped into an old friend.

SARAH
Managed to save your book. (Hands
it to Gael).

GAEL
Hey. Thank you.

Their little group is joined by Richard, who stands next to

Gael. They are all engrossed by the spectacle. We pan across
the four of them. It is only when Richard turns back and walks
away does Sarah finally notice his presence. She stares at him
for a while.

GAEL
I’m gonna head out now. I’ll see
you two sometime.

SARAH
(smiles) Bye Gael. Keep in touch.

LESLIE
Yeah. Don’t be a stranger.

GAEL
(Timidly) Yeah. (Raises the book)
Thanks again for the book.

Gael walks away, heading seemingly nowhere. Leslie puts his on

arm around Sarah’s shoulder and the two of them walk away the
opposite direction. Camera follows them, from the front as
they walk in silence.

SARAH
We forgot to pay. Shouldn’t we go
back?

LESLIE
(Looking back) do you want to?

SARAH
Maybe we should...nah, let’s just
go.
