Self Report

Name of the counselor in trainee: F.M. Christeeba

Name of the place for internship: WIND Trust, Ladies police station, Ponmalai

Name of the in-charge person/Supervisor: Dr. Kamila

Self-learning:

On the first day of the internship, Dr. Kamila explained her one year project. She has shown her
project framework. Goal of the project is to address violence against women in institutional
strengthening of police. And also she wants to outreach 200 women in 4 police station, to link 60
women and their children with short stay homes, to train 100 women for self-employment, to
provide seed capital for 25 women to start-up the business and to place counselors in four police
station. The project purpose is to render family counseling to survivors of violence at police
stations.

In the police station, I have seen 4 cases. For two cases, women needed support, next two cases
men needed more support.

 1st case – Muslim pair(AZ&AR), wife couldn’t adjust to new family set up and not taking
responsibility (taking care of mother-in-law, husband, cooking, washing utensils &
sweeping). She is boasting her & her family and putting her husband and his family
down. She is using obscene language and has low frustration tolerance. Husband is
focused on settling debts and setting financial stability. I used cognitive restructuring,
role awareness, catching oneself techniques and psychoeducation.
 2nd case – Dhivya Dharshini & Sarath Kumar. She attempted suicide twice( escape from
mother, for 2nd attempt reason is that husband refused to buy dress for her). She also
suspects that her mother and brother are trying to kill her. She also complaint that her
husband and his family and her family are putting her down. SK complaint that she is
eating junk food mostly and avoiding healthy food, not have good concentration, she
mostly worries about the past events during day & shows her anger towards him &
breaking things at night and not sleeping well, not waking up early in the morning.
I suspect that she may have paranoid personality disorder or delusion of persecution, but
she has mild symptoms. She didn’t listen to me much, she had a mind set of letting out
everything, to reduce her mental pressure, she shared most of the things.
I also came to know that this lady burned the skin of her husband, the reason is that her
husband intentionally poured boiling rasom curry on her. Actually that is accidentally fell
on both husband and wife hands, when both were cooking.
 3rd case - This pair have done love marriage and it is interreligious marriage. Wife is a
Muslim and husband is Hindu. Wife changed her religion because of him.

Wife complaint that her husband drink too much alcohol and do physical violence onto her and
also beat her mother. And also he is not helping the family financially, only giving 100 to 500
rupees, telling lies to her and not allowing her to have friends. Hence, inorder to run the family,
she is going for work, yet he is suspecting that she has affair there, so he is beating her to stop
her going work.
He is an alcohol dependent person and uses alcohol as morning eye opener, once in two days. He
also has Paranoia that not trusting his wife and suspecting her behavior. He is doing physical
violence. I used future projection, rational questions, catching oneself, BASIC-ID techniques and
psychoeducation and in the first session I addressed his mistrust and incongruence.

 4th case - Mary and Robert. Husband is a materialistic person and not having emotional
intelligence, lack of empathy. He hasn’t seen his new born baby for two months and only
focused on building a new house. He has consciousness personality style that he is an
organized and complete things perfectly. Wife has low frustration tolerance, could not
adjust to new house rules, because she is grown up in city and her mother-in-law is a
village person, so there are many contradiction in using language. This family is
financially stable. Husband wants that Mary to take care of home and his sister-in-law’s
son. He won’t allow to go for job.
I confronted him, make him aware of emotional support that wife wants more than
financial satisfaction. And his role as father and husband. And used Socratic questions to
wife to make herself aware of her low frustration tolerance and her wrong coping skills.
She also looked depressed, no grooming and had dull eyes.

Other programs:

Through Inspector, we got an opportunity to conduct awareness program. There I have met the
principal, staff members and girl students. I had an interaction with them, they shared their
vision. I also made a contact with staff about further counseling help. She said that she will
contact us later.

Inspector got an invitation from in-police service center to take class on Anti-human trafficking,
she asked us to prepare the content. While preparing, I got a knowledge about human trafficking,
types and means, psychological impacts and laws. With the help of Inspector, I visited In-police
service center, there I have met one police, he asked me to provide counseling to his sister
family. By attending that program, I learnt how police are dealing the issue and what kind of
cases are coming.

Conclusion:

I learnt quite a lot about family system, couple adjustments, polarities of personalities, how
one’s maladaptive behavior and distorted thinking affect the whole system, pattern of behavior,
roles of family members, intelligence, emotional intelligence of family members and maturity. I
was able to apply my theoretical orientation and even according to clients, I could choose which
approach would help them.

Even I learnt about police. Police also would give advice to victims and perpetrator about not to
do any harm further and to live peacefully and adjust one another. There motto is not to separate
the couple and people who gave petition, there issue will be solved quickly and not to continue
the problem and have to obey to police and follow the statements they written to inspector about
accepting the issue and not growing the issue.

Overall the clinical exposure was fruitful.
