ENERGY FUNCTION ANA:LYSIS FOR POWER SYSTEM STABILITY

M. A. Pai (Boston: Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1989, 240 pp)

This book is a research monograph written by a well known contributor to

the field. It is a sequel to an earlier book by the same author (Power System
Stability, North Holland, New York, 1981) and covers the state of the art in direct
methods of stability evaluation and stresses particularly the recent developments
using energy functions.
The direct methods based on Liapunov/energy functions has the potential
of simplifying computations in determining transient stability regions of large
power systems for both off-line and on-line studies. While rapid developments
have taken place in the last decade in the field of research on energy functions, the
practical applications in system planning and operations are lagging behind.
Further advances are required in making energy functions a practical and versatile
tool for stability studies. This book is a timely compendium of the recent
advances and will serve ausa fillip for further research in the field.
The book is organized into 7 chapter!; and an appendix. The first chapter
serves as an introduction to the basic notions of synchronous stability and the
concept of energy functions. The equivalence of equal area criterion (applicable to
two machine systems) and the energy function approach is emphasized. The
second chapter deals with the classical models of synchronous machines and the
development of energ functions both for reduced networks (using constant
impedance load models7 and networks where the structure is preserved. The latter
allows the consideration of non-linear and frequency dependent load models.
Chapter 3 is devoted to the reduced order energy functions which attempt the
extension of the equal area criterion to multi-machine systems. Chapter 4
considers the detailed models of synchronour; machines. The recent developments
using structure preserving energy functions are also described. In chapter 5, the
theoretical aspects of the computations of the regions of stability are discussed.
The potential energy boundary surface (PEBS) and the controlling unstable
equilibrium point methods are described in detail. Chapter 6 presents some of the
practical applications of the energy functions methods. The applications for
dynamic security assessment are also included. However, as the author says "At
the present time, these tools remain as demonstrative packages only. They have
yet to be integrated in EMS data base to establish consistency and reliability of
the results so far as the operator is concerned." The last chapter lists some of the
open research problems and discusses the future scope of energy function methods.
The present gaps in analytical and compu1;ations aspects are identified. While
some methods, although theoretically sound, suffer from "curse of dimensionality",
other heuristic methods although backed by physical intuition, have yet to be

refined by extensive testing on large scale systems. The appendix gives the data of
a 10 machine system extensively used by many researchers and can serve as a test
system for trying out different algorithms that are proposed.
In summary, this book is a comprehensive, scholarly research monograph
which should be invaluable to researchers and practicing engineers who are
interested in the energy function methods. The book is also an update on the
previous monograph by the author which is widely used.
