ERX Configuration using
IP, BGP4 and PPP Lab 5

Initial ERX Configuration

Getting Started

1. Cable the ERX using the physical network map noting the slot numbers
on the map.

2. If you or your lab partner do not need practice performing the initial
ERX configuration (Fast Ethernet, Loopback Interface, Telnet, ERX
Hostname), configure the ERX to boot using the start.cnf file
specifying the once option and reload the ERX. Then skip to the
section Configuring IP/BGP/PPP.

3. If you or your lab partner need practice performing the initial ERX
configuration, reload the ERX using factory defaults.

Configuring the Fast Ethernet, Loopback Interface, Telnet, and Hostname for
the Default Router
Using the information on the physical network map, perform the following
steps:
1. Review the factory default configuration file.
2. Enter configuration terminal mode on the ERX.
3. Configure the Fast Ethernet Interface on the SRP.
4. Configure the Fast Ethernet for IP using the address and subnet mask
found on the network map.
5. Exit configuration mode.
6. Verify that you can ping the other ERX on the Ethernet.
7. Review the configuration file.
8. Enter configuration terminal mode.
9. Configure the Loopback 1 interface on the ERX using the IP address
and subnet mask found on the network map.
10. Exit the interface configuration mode.
11. Configure the ERX for Telnet using the line vty command. Specify no
login to disable Telnet passwords.
12. Exit the line configuration mode.
13. Configure the ERX hostname.
14. Exit configuration mode.

Lab 5 Initial ERX Configuration

Configuring the ERX Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Timing Sources

1. Determine the default factory settings for the ERX timing sources:

♦ Primary Timing Source? ______________________________________

♦ Secondary Timing Source? ____________________________________

♦ Tertiary Timing Source? ______________________________________

♦ Which timing source is currently being used? ___________________

2. Configure the ERX’s primary timing source to be the external BITS

clock connected to T1 Port A on the SRP.
In our lab environment, we do not have a BITS clock connected to T1
Port A, , so this source will appear as having an ERROR condition and
will not be used

3. Configure the ERX’s secondary timing source to be the external BITS

clock connected to T1 Port B on the SRP.
Again, in our lab environment, we do not have a BITS clock connected
to T1 Port B, so this source will appear as having an ERROR condition
and will not be used.

4. Configure the ERX’s tertiary timing source to be the internal SC

Oscillator on the SRP.

5. Exit configuration mode.

6. Review the chassis timing parameters on the ERX.

7. NOTE: All lines (CT3, E1, POS, etc.) will have their clock source
configured for internal chassis and will derive clock based on the
parameters configured above.
15. Examine the default router’s IP routing table.

♦ How many routes are listed in the default router’s routing table?

Configuring Additional Loopback Interfaces and Static Routes

We will configure additional Loopback Interfaces as well as dummy static
routes in order to have routes to advertise via BGP.
1. Verify that the Ethernet and Loopback 1 IP Interfaces are operational.
2. Enter configuration mode.
3. Configure the additional Loopback Interfaces using the IP addresses
and subnet masks found on the network map. A subset of these
loopback interfaces will be advertised via BGP using access lists and
route maps.
4. Configure the static routes listed on the network map. Use the NULL
interface as the next hop address. These static routes will be
advertised via BGP using network statements.
5. Exit the configuration mode.
6. Examine the IP routing table and verify the static routes are listed.
7. Examine the IP Interfaces and verify that the additional Loopback
interfaces are listed.

Configuring PPP

1. Configure the CT3/E1 controller.

2. Configure the clock source and no shutdown.
3. Using the information found on the network map, configure the
appropriate T1 or E1 and assign the appropriate timeslots to
subchannel/channel group 1.
4. Exit from the controller branch of the configuration tree.
5. Configure the serial interface or HDLC channel for the Fractional
T1/E1 just configured.
6. Configure PPP as the encapsulation method on the serial interface.
7. Assign an IP address and subnet mask.
8. Assign a description to this IP interface.
8. Exit configuration mode.

5-8 Rev 3.2 ERX Circuit Aggregation Configuration Basics

Lab 5 Configuring IP/BGP/PPP

Verifying PPP

1. Verify that the IP interface is operational using ping.

2. Verify that frames are being transmitted and received on the serial
interface.

3. Determine if the controller ifOperStatus is Up.

4. Verify that frames are being transmitted and received on the PPP
interface.

5. Verify that frames are being transmitted and received on the IP

interface.

6. Examine the IP routing table.

♦ Are any additional routes are listed in the IP routing table? ______

_____________________________________________________________

7. Do not continue until you can ping the other end of the PPP link.

Configuring BGP global parameters and the EBGP neighbor

1. Enter configuration terminal mode.

2. Configure the router’s IP Router ID using the IP address of Loopback 1

1.

3. Using the AS number found on the network map, enable BGP on the
router.

4. Turn off auto-summary and synchronization.

5. Configure the EBGP neighbor using the IP address of the PPP link.

6. Exit configuration mode.

5-10 Rev 3.2 ERX Circuit Aggregation Configuration Basics

Lab 5 Configuring IP/BGP/PPP

Verifying the BGP Connection

Verify that BGP connection is Established between the routers.

1. Determine if the BGP neighbor connection is Established using the

show ip bgp summary command. Try this same command using CLI
output filtering.

♦ Have BGP messages been sent and received? ___________________

♦ Have BGP Prefixes been received at this point? _________________

♦ Why not? ____________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________

2. Examine the IP routing table.

♦ Have any routes been learned via BGP at this point in time?

_____________________________________________________________

3. Examine the BGP routing table using the show ip bgp command.

♦ Have any routes been learned via BGP at this point in time?

_____________________________________________________________

4. Do not proceed until the BGP connection with your neighbor is

Established.

5. Determine if your ERX is advertising any networks to your peer using

the command show ip bgp neighbor a.b.c.d advertised-routes.

♦ Are any networks listed in your router’s RIB-out?

_____________________________________________________________

6. Copy the running configuration to a file called bgp-ppp.cnf.

For Training Purposes Only Rev 3.2 5-11

ERX Configuration using

Advertising Local Networks with BGP using the network command

At this point, networks local to your AS have not been advertised. There
are several different methods to advertise local networks: using the
network statement, redistribution, and redistribution using route maps.
We will look at each option.

1. Configure network statements to advertise the static routes created

earlier.

2. Determine if your ERX is advertising any networks to your peer using

the command show ip bgp neighbor a.b.c.d advertised-routes.

♦ Are any networks listed in your router’s RIB-out?

_____________________________________________________________

3. Verify that a BGP prefix or update message has been received from
your neighbor using the command show ip bgp summary. Remember
to use CLI output filtering.

4. Examine the BGP routing table using the show ip bgp command.

♦ Have any routes been learned via BGP at this point in time?

_____________________________________________________________

♦ What does the ‘>’ symbol indicate?

_____________________________________________________________

5. Do not proceed until the static route is advertised via BGP.

6. Copy the running configuration to a file called bgp-static.cnf.

5-12 Rev 3.2 ERX Circuit Aggregation Configuration Basics

Lab 5 Configuring IP/BGP/PPP

Advertising Local Networks with BGP using Route Redistribution, Route Maps,
and Access Lists
Using BGP Route Redistribution along with Route Maps and Access Lists,
only advertise the following loopback addresses:
ERX 1/3/5/7: Advertise 192.168.1.0 and 192.168.2.0
Do NOT advertise 192.168.3.0
Do NOT advertise 10.13.7.0
ERX 2/4/6/8 Advertise 192.168.16.0 and 192.168.17.0
Do NOT advertise 192.168.18.0
Do NOT advertise 10.13.7.0.

1. Create an access list(s) that will permit and deny the appropriate IP
addresses. Keep in mind that order is important in access lists.

2. Create a route map that will permit and match the appropriate IP
addresses defined in the access lists.

3. Configure BGP to redistribute the appropriate connected networks by

specifying the route map just configured.

4. Examine the BGP routing table and verify that the appropriate
loopback addresses are being advertised.

5. Determine if your ERX is advertising any new networks to your peer

using the command show ip bgp neighbor a.b.c.d advertised-routes.

♦ Are any new networks listed in your router’s RIB-out?

_____________________________________________________________

6. Verify that BGP prefixes or update messages have been received from
your neighbor using the command show ip bgp summary. Remember
to use CLI output filtering.
