Preliminaries
I have decided to mark places where manuscripts disagree on the plene or defective spelling of ā with a
dagger ʾalif. I have not tried to record which manuscript has which. It seems impossible to decide which
of the two spellings was original to the Uthmanic archetype in such positions.

While it is not likely that the Uthmanic archetype was fully dotted for every single consonant, all early
manuscripts have some dotting, and when any two manuscripts have dotting, they overwhelmingly
agree with one another, likewise agreeing with canonical (and many non-canonical) qirāʾāt. I have only
left places undotted where there is disagreement in the reading traditions. In such places I have
provided a footnote with a reference to these readings. If manuscripts mark the dotting difference, I
provide reference to which manuscript has which dotting.

The verse count sticks to the Kufan verse count, for ease of reference. Whenever a manuscript has
regular verse division but is missing a verse marker present in the Kufan count the verse marker will be
surrounded by square brackets, with a footnote which manuscript is missing said marker.

If a verse marker is present, that is absent in the Kufan count, the verse marker is placed in the text,
without a number. A footnote will provide information in which manuscripts the verse marker is
present. Sometimes, verse markers are written, but are not counted, as can be noted by the verse total
mentioned at the beginning of the Surah, or due to ten verse markers. When this is the case, this will be
footnoted.

For the references to Qirāʾāt works, I have primarily made use of the Našr for the ten readings, and the
Muḫtaṣar for non-canonical readings. If manuscripts explicitly indicate one or the other reading I will
make this explicit. I only mention readings that are consistent with the Uthmanic text type, and are
expressed through differences in consonantal dotting, or absence/presence of the ʾalif. For the ten
canonical readers I use a code for brevity of reference. R = rest, i.e. all readers not mentioned.
