    During the period of 1 April 2006 to 31 March 2007: 1) There were 75,479 active teacher members, 14,870 teachers with deferred benefits, and 51,766 pensioners in the Scottish Teachers' Superannuation Scheme. 2) A total of 2,837 teachers retired, including 1,610 who retired at normal age and 593 who took premature retirement. 3) Of those who retired due to ill health, 425 applications were received and 203 were approved, with the most common illnesses being mental disorders and neoplasms.
