INSTRUMENT FUNCTION

FORCEPS

MOSQUITO STRAIGHT & CURVED

ALLIS FORCEP It is a surgical instrument with sharp teeth, used to hold or grasp
heavy tissue

KELLY FORCEP used to clamp blood vessels and hold heavy tissues in place.

OVUM FORCEP Used to grasp, hold, manipulate and remove tissue from inside
the uterus including the ovum and placenta
ADSON FORCEP Forceps toothed at the tip used for handling dense tissue, such as
in skin closures.

TISSUE FORCEP Non-toothed forceps used for fine handling of tissue and traction
during dissection

THUMB FORCEP Used for grasping, holding or manipulating body tissues.

UTERINE FORCEP Long and curved forceps used to grasp the uterus during uterine
birthing and other obstetrics and gynae surgery

HEANEY FORCEP Commonly used during the hysterectomy procedure to clamp off
a tough ligament on both sides of the uterus.

vagina and holding back the tissue

WEITLANER RETRACTOR Selfretaining for exposing deep or smaller surgical sites. Also
called “Wheaty.”

BENNETT BONE ELEVATOR AND RETRACTOR It is a special surgical tool that orthopedic and surgeons use to pull
back and retract tissues.
LANGENBECK RETRACTOR Used to separate the edges of an incision.

VOLKMAN RETRACTOR Used to manipulate tissues during distal limb surgeries.

ROUX RETRACTOR Used to mobilize, retract and statically hold back wound edges
and soft tissues.

HARRINGTON RETRACTOR Used to mobilize retract and statically hold the soft tissued within
the abdominal cavity during specialized surgical procedures.
HIBBS RETRACTOR Used for pulling back and protecting the soft tissues that envelop
the hip joints, in order to expose the surgical field.

JACKSON TRACHEAL RETRACTOR Used to pull the skin and the muscles in the front of the neck this.
This prevents injuring the back of the airways with sharp forces or
instruments.

LUKENS TRACHEAL RETRACTOR Used to make opening in the front of the neck in upper airway
disease.

BONE CUTTER a surgical instrument used to cut or remove bones. In addition to

fractures and injuries in an orthopedic surgery.

BONE RONGEURS heavy-duty surgical instrument with a sharp-edged, scoop-shaped


tip, used for gouging out bone. Rongeur is a French word meaning
rodent or 'gnawer'. A rongeur can be used to open a window in
bone, often in the skull, in order to access tissue underneath.
COLLIN RIB SHEAR a bone instrument used in surgical procedures during the
operations. Its specially used to open chest cavities but it is also
commonly used in orthopedic surgeries to cut open bones to
expose area for the operation.

parts for immobilization

SMITH PETERSON OSTEOTOME used to cut, scrape or shave bone to increase access to the
surgical field or simply for reshaping.

BONE PLATES used when crooked bones are straightened during surgery. The
crooked bone is cut (osteotomy), and the two bone fragments are
moved until they are correctly aligned. Then a plate can be
