Practice exercise
1. A research was conducted to study the effect of social support on depression management.
All the Participants were given a pre-test to measure their level of depression using a
standardised test. Some of the participants spent time with their family members for four
weeks while others did not. After four weeks a post test was administered on all participants
to measure level of depression using the same standardized test. The difference between pre
and post test scores was measured and the means for both groups were compared.

- State IV, DV, CV

IV: Effect of social support
DV: Depression management
CV: Participants should be treated in similar environment. Participants should not deal with
any kind of antidepressants.
- Define operationally IV, DV
In the given situation IV has two levels which was one group spend time with their parents
and other group did not. And in DV there is one level which is depression management.
- Design experiment, state the strengths & flaws of the design
Random group Design is used as there are two random group selected for experiment
The strength of design is outcome of results are sure as it would be tested for Depression.
The flaws of the design can be different age group and gender.
- Frame Null hypotheses
There is no relation between social support and depression management
- Frame alternate hypotheses
There is a relation between social support and Depression management
- State the statistical analysis
T-stat is used as there are two levels of IV that are one spend time with family and other did
not spend time with family
- Discuss ethical issues
Participant should not deal with distress and sudden change in social environment.
2. A study was created to test the effects of jazz on people’s sleep patterns. The hypothesis of
the experiment was that if people listened to jazz music as they fall asleep, they will sleep for
longer periods of time. For the experiment, 2 groups of people were created. One group was
placed in a quiet room where they went to sleep and they were timed on how long they slept.
The other group was placed in a room where jazz music played softly as they began to sleep
and played throughout the night. As each group awoke, their sleep times were monitored.

- State IV, DV, CV

IV: Effect of jazz music on people
DV: Changes in sleep patterns
CV: The sound of music should not be high as it can cause changes in sleep patterns.
Participant should be mentally present while the experiment is conducted on them, they
should not be sleepy before experiment.
- Define operationally IV, DV
In the given situation there are two levels of IV, one who listened to jazz music and one who
did not listen to jazz music there is one level of DV which is observing the changes in sleep
patterns.
- Design experiment, state the strengths & flaws of the design
In given situation Random group design is used as there are to random groups participated
for the experiment one group listened to jazz music and one group did not.
The flaws of this design can refer with age factor as we are not considering old age groups.
- Frame Null hypotheses
There is no significant effect of jazz music on sleep patterns.
- Frame alternate hypotheses
There is significant effect of jazz music on sleep patterns.
- State the statistical analysis
A t-stat is used as there are two levels of IV which are one who listened to jazz music and
one who did not listen jazz music.
- Discuss ethical issues
Participant suffering from Insomnia/Nyctophobia should not be taken as participant as they
can cause error in the experiment.
