Geometric Designs implemented in a Highways/Expressways or Roads.

Geometric Designs is said to be the determination of layout and features visible on

Highways, Expressways, or Roads. These designs help engineers to build a much safer
roads, highways, and expressways for drivers. The main features that were considered
for geometric designs of highways are Cross-section Elements, The Gradient,
Intersections, and Sight Distances. These implemented designs are used internationally
and locally. For international setting, these designs are well built due to having a lot of
resources and budget for the engineers to plan and conduct these designs. For locally
setting, proper planning and having the budget to build and plan for these designs must
be hard to 3rd world base countries like us. As we learn and embrace changes in
technology we can develop and create new geometric designs for a better driving
experience.

Passing Sight Distances

a. International Setting – Passing sight distance give drivers to maneuver of slow

vehicles. For international setting, road signs and lane lines are used to warn
drivers if the upcoming road is having a vertical curve or simple curve.
b. Local Setting – the passing sight distance here in our country it is really based on
the driver’s skill and knowledge on driving. Roads that aren’t wide enough and
the signs and lines on the road are slowly fading.

Intersections

a. International Setting – intersection is usually a junction where two or more roads

converge, diverge, meet, or cross. Usually, the setting for intersections is that
there is road signage for drivers which includes (U-turn, Right turns, or Left
Terns). There are also stop signs and a traffic light present in the intersection.
b. Local Setting – Intersection here in our country is as same as with the setting
Internationally but the majority of our intersections have less traffic lights. In the
bright side, there are road assistance for drivers in the intersections provided by
enforcers when traffic congestion occurs in the area.

Horizontal Alignments

a. International Setting - Horizontal alignment is the positioning of a roadway, with

the use of a series of straight lines called tangents connected by circular curves.
For international setting, the roadway is set to It show the proposed roadway
location in relation to the existing terrain and adjacent land conditions. Together
with the vertical alignment the horizontal alignment helps to provide a three-
dimensional roadway layout.
b. Local Setting – the setting here in our country for Horizontal Alignments is the
same with the international setting.
