Activity Title : TANGENT, SECANT, SEGMENT AND SECTOR OF A CIRCLE
Learning Target : Solve problems involving tangent segment and secant segment
Reference(s) : ADM Mathematics 10, MELC, Math Learner’s Module 10

If a tangent segment and a secant segment are drawn to a circle from the same exterior
point, then the square of the length of the tangent segment is equal to the product of
the lengths of the secant and its external secant segment.

Example: Solve the given problem.

The figure below shows a sketch of a circular children’s park and the different pathways from the
main road. If the distance from the main road to Gate 2 is 70m and the length of the pathways from
Grade 2 to the Exit is 50m, about how far from the main road is Gate 1?

Legend:
M – Main Road H – Gate 1
G – Gate 2 E - Exit

̅̅̅̅̅ = 70𝑚
Given: 𝑀𝐺 ̅̅̅̅ = 50𝑚
𝐺𝐸 ̅̅̅̅̅ =
𝐸𝑀 120𝑚
̅̅̅̅̅
𝐻𝑀 = ?

Solution:

̅̅̅̅̅
𝐸𝑀 ∙ ̅̅̅̅̅
𝑀𝐺 = ̅̅̅̅̅
𝐻𝑀2 8400𝑐𝑚2 = ̅̅̅̅̅
𝐻𝑀2

̅̅̅̅̅2
120𝑐𝑚 ∙ 70𝑐𝑚 = 𝐻𝑀 ̅̅̅̅̅2
√8400𝑐𝑚2 = √𝐻𝑀

ACTIVITY: Solve the given problem.

You have a circular garden in your backyard. The

center of the circular garden is 40 meters from
the entrance and its radius is 12 meters as
shown in the figure. Your mother asked you to
pave a path walk that is tangent to the opposite
location of the garden from the entrance. What is
the length of each path walk?
