1. INTRODUCTION

Geotechnical investigation for proposed tensile arch roof auditorium for E K Nayanar Academy was
carried out at Burnacherry, Kannur. Burnacherry is a locality in Kannur city in Kannur district, state of
Kerala. It is decided to carry out a detailed sub soil investigation to find out safe bearing capacity and
selection of appropriate foundation for proposed auditorium. The work of geotechnical investigation was
awarded to M/s Matter Material Testing & Research Laboratory (P) Ltd. The field work for the
geotechnical investigation was completed by M/s Matter Material Testing & Research Laboratory (P)
Ltd..in December 2021. This report presents results of the geotechnical investigation and foundation
recommendation. Two boreholes were bored using rotary drill. Standard penetration tests were conducted
at regular intervals and soil samples were taken from these depths for identification and soil classification.

2. GEOLOGY

The district can be broadly divided into seven geological belts trending NW-SE viz., (i) northern belt of
Charnockite group extending further north and east to the adjacent districts, (ii) north central belt of
Wayanad schist complex, (iii) Central belt of Peninsular Gneissic Complex extending to the southeast, (iv)
south central belt of Vengad Group, equivalent to Dharwars, (v) southernmost belt of Migmatite Complex
which extends further south to the adjacent district, (vi) Sedimentary (Warkalli Beds) in the western part
near the coast and (vii) Quaternary sediments along the coast. The lithology of Kannur district is grouped
under Precambrian, late Tertiary and Quaternary periods and the Precambrian rocks dominate over the
other two. Charnockite Group, includes pyroxene granulite, charnockite (hypersthene granulite) and
hornblende-diopside granulite. While hornblende granite and charnockite occupy large areas, pyroxene
granulite occurs as linear bodies in the southeast. Hornblendebiotite gneiss constitutes the litho unit of
Migmatite Complex. It has a large areal extent along the coast, south of Kannur. Towards east and
southeast, discrete metasedimentary and ultramafic sequences which have been designaed as Wayanad
Schist Complex and are considered equivalent of Sargur Group of Karnataka. They occur as isolated
bands within charnockite and gneiss. Their contacts are generally discordant due to later folding,
metamorphism and migmatisation. The group comprises quartzite, magnetite quartzite, garnet-kyanite-
sillimanite gneiss, quart-mica-kyanite schist, quartz-sericite schist, amphibolite, kyanite-sillimanite-
sericite quartzite, metaultramafites. Garnetkyanite-sillimanite gneiss/schist is widespread in the east,
whereas the other members of Wayanad Complex occur as linear bands, lensoidal bodies and vestiges to

the West Peninsular Gneisic Complex, represented by hornblende-biotite gneiss comprise of a complex
suite of gneisses and granites, representing the anatectic phase of migmatisation of schist complex. East
of Kannur extending upto Tellichery in the south, a large body of quartz-mica schist is separated from the
other schistose rocks by a conglomerate horizon extending over 8km. This lithounit known as Vengad
Formation, characterised by lack of migmatisation, presence of primary structres and absence of high
grade minerals, is correlatable with rocks of Dharwar Super Group. Large bodies of anortjosite, gabbro,
granite and granophyre from the post Vengad basic and acid intrusives. Dolerite dykes trending NW-SE
represent the younger basic intrusives. Late Tertiary sedimentary rocks (Warkalli beds) occur as isolated
patches along the coast near Kannur, Pazhayangadi and east of Payyannur. They comprise variegated
clays and friable sandstone. At Kannur and Pazhayangadi, carbonaceous clay with thin seams of lignite is
reported towards bottom of the sedimentary sequence. The Tertiaries as well as the basement rocks are
extensively lateritised. The pebble bed, reported near Valapatnam along the bank of Valapatanam river, is
considered to be of Quaternary age. Quaternary alluvial deposit occur along the coast and in the valleys.
They constitute palaeo-marine deposit (Guruvayur Formation), fluvial deposit (Periyar Formation) of
Valapatnam and Dharmadom rivers, fluvio-marine deposits (Viyyam Formation) and beach deposits
(Kadappuram Formation).

Fieldwork was started from 22nd December 2021 and completed on 24th December 2021.The brief
description of the activities that comprised the field investigation is presented in the sections below.
One boring unit with all necessary equipment along with a team of technical personal with skilled
labours where mobilised at the work site.Three 150 mm diameter boreholes were taken at the site.
First, dig the starting borehole with boring equipment.Once boring of the hole is done up to desired
depth (1.50 m depth) remove the drilling tools from the borehole and clean all the disturbed-
materials. After that fit the soil sampler named as split spoon sampler with the drilling rod and lower
into the borehole. Now, rest split spoon sampler attracted with drilling rod at bottom of the drilled
borehole of undistributed soil.As we place sampler rest on the bottom of the borehole, it’s time to
conduct the SPT test.Keep ready test equipment the Hammer, Anvil and guiding rod and assemble
them with each other properly.Mark three lines with a spacing of 150mm on the drilling rod to
observe penetration details.Firstly drive the drop hammer on the bottom of a borehole by blows from
the slide hammer with a mass of 63.5 kg falling through a distance of 750 mm (30 in). Now, Count the
numbers of blow required to reach or drive depth of 150 mm (6 in).Similarly, again drive sampler in
soil and count the blows needed to penetrate the second and third 150 mm (6 in).Sum of blows
required for last 300mm penetration is recorded as field N value. The Test shall be made at every
change in the stratum or at intervals of not more than 1.5 meter whichever is less. The test may be
made at lesser intervals if necessary or specified.
Finally take out a split sampler from the borehole. Carefully, separate the split spoon sampler from the
drilling rod and remove any excess soil from the bottom, also drain water if it contains. Slowly open
the one side of the split spoon sampler to expose fresh material and any stratification. Record the
length, composition, color, stratification, and condition of the sample.Remove soil specimen from
split spoon sampler and pack it in a plastic bag.
The borehole was extended by rotary drilling as per IS:1892-1972. Standard Penetration Tests (SPT)
was carried out in the boreholes as per provisions contained in Indian Standard Code IS 2131-1981.
Maximum depths achieved in the boreholes and the depths of water table are given as in below Table.

6. FOUNDATION RECOMMENDATION

Two boreholes were taken at the site up to a maximum depth of 7.95 m from existing ground level.
Standard Penetration Tests were conducted in both bore holes. At the time of investigation, the water
table was met at 1.50 m and 1.80 m at borehole(BH) 1 and borehole(BH) 2 respectively.Both the bore
holes show very hard laterite from shallow depth onwards. The safe bearing capacity (SBC) of the soil has
been estimated using the IS 6403:1981.
In BH-1 location filled Lateritic soil is present up to 1.20m from Existing Ground Level(E.G.L). Below
the filled laterite soil a hard laterite stratum is encountered up to 6.45m having an N value more than 50.
In BH-2 location filled lateritic soil is present up to a depth of 0.80 m and below that clayey laterite
encountered upto 2.30 m with N value of 30 and hard lateritic strata is encountered upto 7.95m with N
value more than 50. Shallow foundation can be recommended on the hard lateritic strata at a depth of
1.50m.
A Safe Bearing Capacity of 234 kN/m2 at BH-1 location and 178 kN/m2 at BH-2 location is achieved for
a square footing of size 1m x 1m. But considering the critical case, a Safe Bearing Capacity of 178 kN/m2
can only be recommended with the available data. A refined and revised bearing capacity could be
recommended if further exploration is conducted at site.

An alternative proposal considering ease of construction and cost effectiveness would be to provide
circular short piles as foundation having a diameter of 1m resting at a depth of 1.5m from existing ground
level and the steel stanchion welded to steel plate is firmly anchored to the short piles.
The safe bearing capacity for different size of recommended foundation is given below.

Table 2: SBC of recommended foundations

BH1 And BH2 1.50 1.50 X 1.50 175

Circular footing 1m Diameter 173

The above recommendation is made based on the bore hole chart received. If there is any variation in soil
profile observed during execution, fresh recommendations may be obtained from the under signed.
