FOREWORD

It is really undeniable that research plays a vital role not only in the academe, but also in the
industry practices. But then again, there are still people who avoid getting involved in research. Well
as a student, you should maximize all the possible opportunities to be knowledgeable on the research
process while still studying. This will be truly helpful to your future career.
This module aims to develop and to improve your minds for you to know the role of qualitative
research in societal growth. This module introduces you to the fundamental techniques of improving

This module is anchored to the theory of “Experiential Learning: Learning by Doing” by John
Dewey (1938) and David Kolb (1984. Anthony William Bates, the author of the article ‘Teaching in
Digital Age’ cited Simon Fraser University’s definition of experiential learning as:
“the strategic, active engagement of students in opportunities to learn through doing, and reflection on
those activities, which empowers them to apply their theoretical knowledge to practical endeavours in
a multitude of settings inside and outside of the classroom.”

Thus, in this module you will be asked to do series of learning activities that encourages you
to reflect on real life situations and experiences, produce something from these daily experiences and
observations, gain insights that will enhance your practical expertise in your field of specialization. The
learning experiences will be delivered through use of technology to enhance your knowledge and skills

MODULE 2
Lesson 1 – ELEMENTS OF PERSONAL NARRATIVE

I. INTRODUCTION

“Every man has within himself the entire human condition” stated by Michel De Montaigne. In other
words, you have life experiences that everyone else has also experienced. Moments in time that reveals the
state of the human condition and life experiences that have universal meaning.
Personal narrative is a form of writing in which a writer relates a specific experience, event,
relationship, or incident through descriptive detail. The narrative often includes the author’s thoughts,
feelings, and reactions through a candid and authentic tone. A narrative is a story that is usually told in
chronological order (the order in which the events happen, from beginning to end).

At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to:

1. Explain the relationship of elements and ideas found in the various forms and types of
creative nonfictional texts through a close reading.
2. understand the distinction between and among creative nonfiction types and forms.
3. write a draft of creative nonfiction piece based on memorable real-life experience.
We will be proceeding with our lesson proper with the use of the following e-learning platforms:

IV. ABSTRACTION

Travelogue
A travelogue is a person’s account of a journey to another country or place. It can either be a written
report with many factual details or a narrative story about personal impressions and experiences supported
by images.

Travel writing is quite a popular genre. People take the help of the travelogues to know about a
particular place before deciding to visit it. Travel writing generally gives detailed information about the
attractions of a place so that people get tempted to go there on their vacations. Hence, writers involved in
travel writing should follow some specific rules to make their travelogues more appealing and interesting to
the readers.

1. Research about the Place

Before writing about a particular destination, make a thorough research of it. If you are able to go to
the place then it gives you a first-hand experience about it. You could find for yourself what the place is all
about. You could even ask the local people about its legends and other information related to that place. You
could tour all over the place and find out for yourself all its hidden secrets that would attract a tourist bent on
having fun. Hence, you could build up quite a reliable picture in your travelogue. But, if you live quite far away
from the place in question, then you must rely on other resources. First, you should look up all the available
information related to the place. You could look up books available in the library or you could surf the net. If
PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG MARIKINA
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Nicanor Roxas St. San Roque, Marikina City

you find some pictures of it then it could also help you a lot in your write ups as it would give you a clearer
idea about the looks of the place. So, one must always do a thorough research and present a complete
knowledgeable database for the readers.

2. Give a Photographic Description

Writers are artists. They present a picture through their words. Hence, show your artistic talent here
by describing the place in such a complete manner that the reader actually visualizes it. Spin a beautiful
picture so as to make the reader want to visit that place. If you could get a picture of it then you can take its
help to give an apt description. So, giving a photographic description will make your travelogue that much
more appealing.

3. Highlight the Various Attractions

In travel writing, highlighting the various attractions is of paramount importance. The first thing that
attracts a person to a particular place is its various appeals. A place may be very beautiful in its scenic beauty
but until and unless it doesn’t give us any other attractions in the way of sports or any other thing, few people
will be tempted to visit it. So, include in your travelogue all the available attractions of that place so as to lure
maximum number of visitors to it.

4. Mention the Ways and Means to Reach the Destination

You have done your job of enticing the reader to visit the place with your travel writing. But, if the reader does
not get the adequate information regarding the ways and means of reaching that destination then s/he may
drop the plan to visit it altogether. Therefore, always try to include the various means by which one can easily
reach the place. You could give the information regarding the airline details, train details, or any other detail
that you deem necessary.

5. Name a Few Good Hotels

Once a person reaches her/his destination then s/he may have trouble locating all the good hotels
in that place. So, you could help your readers out of their bewilderment by naming a few good hotels for their
benefit. And while you are naming the hotels then make sure that you choose hotels for all the economic
classes. Hence, you could mention some star hotels for the rich and the powerful. Good hotels for the middle
class segment. And some cheap lodgings for the lower middle class people. Thus, your travelogue would
help people from all segments of the society and will be greatly popular in its effect.

6. Mention Some Out of the Way Tourist Attraction

To give your travelogue that specific edge, you should try to include some out of the way tourist
attractions. These tourist attractions could be anything from a visit to the local winery or some bargain or
elusive items sold at the local market. So, do your homework properly if you want to excel in travel writing.

7. Give Some Cultural Background

Giving some cultural background of the place makes your travelogue richer in its content. People like
to know the background and culture of a place they are planning to visit. It gives them a distinctive idea of
what to expect from that place. It also helps them in their choice of clothes, accessories, etc. So, do remember
to include this little bit of information in your travel writing.

8. Mention Some Dos and Don’ts of the Place

Lastly, mention some dos and don’ts of the place so that a person does not make a cultural mistake
there. Say a person is planning to visit the Middle East. Then, s/he should wear very decent clothes. Knowing
the dos and don’ts of a particular place makes a person abide by all her/his etiquettes while fully enjoying the
sights and sounds of that place.

MODULE 2
Lesson 3- REFLECTION ESSAY

I. INTRODUCTION
Essay is considered as one of the canonical genres of literature along with poetry, fiction, and drama.
By now, you probably know that there are different types which are narrative essay (tells a story), descriptive
essay (which paints with words), expository essay (which makes an explanation), and argumentative essay
(which expresses the author’s opinion on particular topic)
The reflection or reflective essay is one that expresses the writer’s insights on a given subject matter
but, unlike the argumentative essay whose main purpose is to convince the reader of the logic and validity of
the author’s argument, the reflection essay concerns itself, above all, with the author’s introspection
especially with respect to what he/she learned from individual experiences. It should likewise be a reminder
that in writing a reflection essay, one may integrate elements from the other types. For instance, one may tell
an anecdote (narrative) or describe a place or person (descriptive).

At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to:

1. discuss reflection essay as a type of creative nonfiction;
2. understand the distinction between and among creative nonfiction types and forms; and
3. write the final version of one’s own creative nonfiction.

We will be proceeding with our lesson proper with the use of the following e-learning platforms:

10. Zoom;
11. Google classroom; and
12. Messenger/messenger chat room.

III. ANALYSIS
Directions: This sample essay below is about reflecting on the arrival of a younger sibling. Read
and answer the following questions briefly.
My Little Brother
In my short life, there are many experiences that could qualify as life-changing. Every new
experience was, at one time or another, the first experience. For good or bad, each instance changed
PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG MARIKINA
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

the course that my life has taken. But, the most transformative experience was the birth of my
youngest brother.
Joel is someone my parents often call a happy accident. At the time that my mother became
pregnant, I was 13, and my other brother, Jake, was 10. We were what you would call a well-rounded,
perfect family of four. We neatly fit into the perfect classification in nearly every way. We didn't realize
what we were missing until the moment that my youngest brother first opened his striking blue eyes.
In truth, I resented the fact that I would be having another sibling. Nothing needed to be
added to our family, and my mother, already 38 at the time, was considered high risk because of her
age. The pregnancy itself was full of complications that sent the straight course of my life into
rollercoaster-like loops that my 13-year-old mind had a hard time comprehending. But now, I can see
how forging through those loops helped me to roll with the punches that life inevitably brings
The day Joel was born, my mother took me with her to the hospital rather than my father. It
wasn't a planned move, but Jake and my father were both feverish; I was the next best alternative.
Sitting with her through every contraction, I gained a new respect for just how powerful and strong a
woman could be in what might be considered their weakest moment. Holding her hand and feeding
her ice chips, I gained a connection with my mother that I didn't realize we were lacking.
The moment my new baby brother came into this world, I realized two things nearly
simultaneously. First, you don't realize how much you need something until it's sitting in your lap.
Second, my life after this moment would never be the same. The moment he curled his chubby little
finger around mine, I understood the words "happy accident" completely.
There are many different experiences in life that have changed a part of me as a person.
But, nothing so profoundly changed my views and outlook on life like the birth of my youngest brother.
Joel's arrival was a life-altering event that caused me to see the world through new eyes.

Reflection essay
Reflective essays describe an event or experience, then analyze the meaning of that
experience and what can be learned from it. What makes an essay reflective is that the writer is
analyzing a past event from the present. It requires the writer to open up about their thoughts and
emotions to paint a true picture of their history, personality, and individual traits. They should include
a vivid summary and description of the experience so that the reader feels they have also
experienced it. They should also include an explanation of your thoughts, feelings, and reactions.

What Can You Write About?

The most common subjects
 A real experience
 Something you imagined
 A place or a special object
 Something you've read, watched, seen, touched, tasted, smelled, or heard.

My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

I am the captain of my soul.

CLOSER TOGETHER EVEN WHEN WE'RE APART
By Ava Te-Zabat
Life in quarantine has forced all of us to reimagine how to maintain our relationships, and
send love while self-isolating. Couples, even those living within a few kilometers from each other,
have unexpectedly shifted to long-distance relationships. And even as the country moves towards
easing restrictions, safety under these changing times is of utmost importance. While the distance
remains, here are some date night ideas, data and internet capability allowing, to help you
#StayCloserApart and your hearts growing fonder:
Have an online game night
For the couples with a competitive streak, keep that spark by setting up a game night
between each other. Whether it’s an RPG you play via platforms like Discord or Twitch, or a virtual
escape room you try to solve together, there are many available ways to bond over a shared desire
to win.
Try out a new recipe
We’ve seen all kinds of cooking and baking challenges since the start of quarantine, from
Dalgona coffee to sushi bake, with lots of people trying their hands at these DIY recipes. If neither of
you are very good in the kitchen, help each other out virtually and try the same recipe together, for a
new spin on sharing a meal. Tip: Dress up and light a candle, so you can bask in the ambience of
your date night.
Complete a workout
If you get motivated to exercise when you’re SO is beside you to cheer you on, maybe you’ve
become a bit lazy or uninspired to finish the routine. Take an online class together, whether it’s an
intense HIT workout, or a fun and energetic Zumba class, so you can still be each other’s workout
buddies while apart.
Go on a virtual movie date
For the cinephile couples who had regular dates in the cinema, now you can replicate that
experience digitally. Whether it’s through a shared screen, the Netflix party extension on Google
Chrome, or simply pressing the play button at the same time, your movie dates and marathons can
continue even under isolation

IV. ABSTRACTION

Blog
A blog (short for “Web log”) is simply a Web publishing platform that presents the most
recently published content at the top of a Web site, followed, chronologically, by older content
vertically down the page. Blog entries (much like mini journal entries) tend to be fairly short but
sometimes are as long as several thousands of words. CNN's Global Public Square was an excellent
example of a legitimate news blog, as was The New York Times' The Lede.

Blog styles usually fall somewhere on a continuum between traditional journalism (such as
an op-ed piece that night appear in a print newspaper) and a personal diary. The purpose of blogs
also varies widely. Blogs often express personal opinions, experiences and perspectives regarding
an event or a source of information (e.g., here's a link to this great article I found, and here's what I
think of it). The writing style tends to be less formal (unlike a structured essay), and bloggers often
have the aim of engaging reader participation via commenting.

What function do blogs serve in a democratic society?

Consider the opinion of Yale University student Leah Anthony Libresco: “Blogs inform and
empower ordinary citizens by allowing related data to be synthesized quickly and comprehensively
and by making it easier for citizens to share their new opinions with friends or elected officials. In the
blogosphere, you're only a hop, skip, and a link away from sending form letters to send people or
joining a meetup for a protest. Democracy depends on lowering the barriers to becoming informed.
Although blogs are a great resource for the wonky, policy-making elite, their real power lies in their
ability to provide broad overviews of the issues at stake and quick links for citizen activists.”

What makes a good blog post?

At a minimum, a blog post should have a focused topic, be informative and engaging, and
include some form of backed-up opinion. Posts should be provocative, yet respectful. Sometimes
posts can reference other sources of online information, offering the reader the opportunity to
investigate the topic further. Good blog posts often inspire readers to comment on the post.

What are blogging ethics? Should bloggers be governed by such “rules”?

Blogs are posted in a public space. As such, consider whether there are rules of ethics or
etiquette that responsible bloggers should follow. “Martin,” a blogger and media researcher,
proposed the following “Code of Blogging Ethics.” (NOTE: Some of these criteria will not apply to the
students’ actual assignment, but are valuable to discuss nonetheless.)

How Blogging Works
Blogging is as simple as obtaining a website and publishing original content on it. Tech-savvy
bloggers can buy a domain name and build the website themselves. Those with less HTML knowledge can
create an account with sites like WordPress that simplify the web design and publishing process.
Blogs are usually simple websites. Older pieces may be archived in separate sections of the site,
and there may be a separate page with contact info or a bio, but the blog itself is usually just a single page
that can be scrolled through—similar to the news feed on social media sites like Facebook. As with a
Facebook news feed, a blog displays the newest content at the top of the page.
All of the posts on a blog are usually created by a single author. However, when a company or
organization maintains a blog, it may pay for blog content—either by hiring a team of writers or buying
content to post.
Another unique feature of blogging is interlinking. This occurs when a blogger links to another
person's blog within their own blog post. For example, if a music teacher maintains a blog, and they write a
blog post about how to form a chord, they might link to a musician's blog to show an example of the chords
in action. A political blogger may link to another politics blog and then discuss how they agree or disagree
with a post on that blog. Interlinking, along with the comment section, fosters the sense of community that
makes blogs unique.
