(WEEK 6)
TORAH PARASHAH (LAW): Gen. 25:19-28:9
Gen. Chap. 25:19-28 (V19) – This is the genealogy of Isaac.
V22-26 – Rebekah, his wife conceived, bore twins.
V27 – Esau grew, a skilled hunter. Jacob, a mild (stable) man, dwelling in tents.
V28 – Isaac loved Esau, Rebekah loved Jacob.
V29-34 – Esau sell his birthright – Insights:
a.) In Hurrian culture (Haran), a man can sell his birthright to his brother.

b.) Birthright is headship of family, and a double share of the inheritance (Deut.21:17).

c.) Jacob may be ruthless, but Esau’s focus for the present and tangible at any cost, caused him to despise
his birthright – V34.
Gen. Chap. 26:1-35 – Isaac and Abimelech – Insights:
a.) Isaac repeats Abraham’s lie, with Rebekah as sister, for fear he would be killed – V1-11.

b.) Isaac’s industry made him very prosperous – V12-14.

c.) The Philistines stopped up the wells for envy – V15-17.

d.) In Gerar, he dug wells again – V17-22.

• First – Esek: Quarrel


• Second – Sitnah: Enmity
• Third – Rehoboth: Spacious
e.) God’s covenant to Abraham revived: “I will bless and multiply Your descendants”, Isaac built an altar,
called on The Name of the Lord – V23-25.
f.) Abimelech, Isaac made a “Peace Treaty” sealed by a feast. A feast is to ratify a covenant – V26-31.

g.) Fourth well – Sheba: Beersheba, well of Oath, well of the seven (Gen.21:31) – V32-33.

h.) Esau’s marriage to foreign wives: Another step away from the family’s favor -V34-35.

Gen. Chap. 27 – Isaac Blesses Jacob.


(Insights: Halley’s Bible Handbook – Gen. 29:1-46):
a.) The Patriarchal Blessing is foundational in the transfer of emotional and spiritual vitality thru’ genera-
tions, formalized in “The Aaronic Blessing” (Num.6:24-26) -V1-4.
b.) Considerations regarding The Blessings – V5-29

• It was accomplished by deception.


• Rebekah put Jacob up to it.
• Jacob desired the birthright, the channel of God’s promise of blessing to the whole world.
• Jacob paid highly for his fraud (Chap.29).
• God Himself was laying the foundation of His Universal plan (Rom.9:10-13), making the
choice before the boys were born (Gen.25:23).

c.) The Firstborn blessings’ vital elements:

• Material prosperity – V28.


• Political supremacy – V29a
• Cursing of all enemies – V29b

Gen. Chap. 28:1-9 (V1-5) – Isaac Blessed Jacob.


a.) To take a wife among his kindred.

b.) Be fruitful, multiply as an assembly of people.

c.) His descendants to inherit the land.

d.) He went to Laban, Rebekah’s brother in Padan Aram.

V6-9 - Esau marries Mahalath, Ismael’s daughter. His endeavor is futile for God is not working thru’ Ish-
mael.

HAFTARAH (PROPHETS): Mal. 1:1-2:7


Mal. Chap. 1:1-5 Insights:
a.) God chose Jacob, thru’ whom the nation of Israel and the Messiah would come.

b.) God allowed Esau to father a nation, but Edom, later, became one of Israel’s chief enemies.

c.) Jacob, God’s channel to bless the world, He cared for them in a special way, but they rejected Him after
having chosen them.
V6-10 – Insights:
a.) The priesthood, worship, and way of sacrifices all declined.

b.) Neglecting God’s word, they led the people astray.

V11-14 – Insights:
a.) My Name will be honored by the Gentiles. My Name shall be great among the nations.

b.) Now, God’s people are all who believe in Him, Jews and Gentiles.

c.) The sweet sacrifice to the Lord is the believer’s new life in Christ (2 Cor.2:14-15).

Mal. Chap. 2:1-7


a.) To worship God: Acknowledge Him for who He is, The Almighty Creator, who alone is perfect, who
reaches out to sinful mankind with perfect love.
b.) The priest in Malachi’s day stopped loving God.

c.) Their ignorance of God’s knowledge was willful and inexcusable (Hos. 4:6).

BRIT CHADASHAH (GOSPEL): Mt. 10:21-38


Mt. 10: 21-26 – Persecution Are Coming – Insights:
a.) Disciples are encouraged that even Christ, the Master, suffered rejection and persecution.

b.) Inspite persecution, Christ’s followers continue to proclaim The Gospel Truth.

V27-31 – Jesus Teaches the Fear of God – Insights:


a.) Those who fear God and stand up for His Name, inspite troubles, have lasting value and will receive
great rewards.
b.) Threats to life can not separate us from God’s love and Spirit in Christ Jesus.

V32-33 – Those who confess Jesus to others, He will also acknowledge before the Father.

V32-37 – Jesus does not disregard human relations. He teaches loyal devotion to Him, be every disciples’
priority.
V38 – Take up your Cross, follow Me: A call for disciplined commitment to Christ regardless of the cost
(as suffering, dying for His sake).

Gen. Chap. 28:10-22 – Jacob’s Vow At Bethel.
V10 – Now Jacob went out from Beersheba and went toward Haran – Insights:
a.) Dream: God initiating grace, assures Jacob, He is the Lord of the past and the future.

b.) He is the 3rd generation to receive the Covenant because of God’s faithfulness to Abraham.

c.) He took the stone by his head, set up a pillar, poured oil on it, and named the place Bethel, “House of
God, Gate of Heaven”.
d.) A tenth to You: The Tithe is part of the Abrahamic covenant of grace.

Gen. Chap. 29:1-35 (V1) – So Jacob went and came to the land of the people of the East.
V1-14 – Jacob meets Rachel, meaning “Ewe, a female sheep”.
a.) Jacob’s kiss: A patriarchal greeting between men and women.

b.) Laban, Jacob’s match: God’s discipline for Jacob for 20 years (31:41) – V13.

c.) Leah, “Delicate, her eyes are weak or lacked luster” – V17.

V15-30 – Jacob marries Leah and Rachel.
V31-35 – Jacob’s children by Leah:
a.) Reuben: “The Lord saw my affliction” – V32.

d.) Judah: “Praise” – V35.

Gen. Chap. 30:1-43 – Jacob’s Children:

a.) Gad: “Troop, Fortune” – V9-11.

V14-16 – Leah went out to meet Jacob, asked him to lay with her, and she bore:

b.) Zebulun: “Dwelling” – V19-20.

c.) Dinah: “Judgment” – V21.

V22 – God remembered Rachel and opened her womb, she bore Joseph “He will add”-

V25-43 – Jacob’s agreement with Laban – Insights:
a.) Honored Jacob’s faith (31:9).

b.) God’s blessings always exceed man’s defrauding.

Gen. Chap. 31:1-21 – Jacob Flees from Laban – Insights:


Gen. 31:1-21 (V3) – The Lord said to Jacob, “Return to the land of your fathers and I will be with you”.
a.) Jacob set his family on camels – V7a.

b.) Carried away all his possessions, to go to his father Isaac, in Canaan – V17b.

c.) Rachel stole their household idols (Teraphims: Family heirs) – V19.

d.) Jacob fled with all he had and crossed the river toward Gilead – V20.

V22-42 – Laban pursues Jacob: God intervenes in Laban’s dream, “To be careful to speak to Jacob neither
good or bad (threats)”- V24.

V43-55 – Laban’s covenant with Jacob – Insights:
a.) MIZPAH: “God to keep watch between them while absent from each other”- V49.

b.) The covenant made Jacob’s departure peaceful.

c.) Jacob had to learn to trust God’s intervention, rather than fleeing in fear (V31).

Gen. Chap. 32:1-3 – Esau Comes to Meet Jacob.


V1 – Jacob went on his way, and angels of God met him.
V2-3 – He saw them and said, “This is God’s camp (Mahanaim)” – Insights:
a.) Jacob’s greatest challenge is facing Esau whom he cheated 20 years earlier.

b.) The presence of the angels of God, were reassuring.

HAFTARAH (PROPHETS): Hos. 12:1-14:9.


Hos. Chap. 12:1-14 – Jacob found God at Bethel.
a.) Israel (Jacob’s new name), making secret agreement with Assyria and Egypt, would bring disaster – V12.

b.) Bethel: The center of idolatry, the very spot their father Jacob dedicated his life to God (Gen. 28:13-15).

c.) Jacob purged his house of idols (Gen. 35:2), but his descendants were unable to banish idolatry from
their midst – V2-5.
d.) Jacob fled to Syria, earned a wife, then tended sheep: For him not to forget his humble beginnings,
realizing all he possess is from God’s gracious favor to him.

Hos. Chap. 13 – God’s Anger Against Israel – Insights:


a.) They sinned more and more.

b.) They regressed from Baal to calf worship. Under Ahab, that brought National disaster (1 Kg. 19:18).
c.) Succession of kings proved a failure in representing God, their True King – V10-11.

d.) They refuse to come to birth, to newness of life.

e.) Yet in God’s pity, He will bring complete redemption to them, and ultimately destroy death – V14-16.

Hos. Chap. 14:1-9 – Israel Restored at Last:


V1-4 – Israel, return to the Lord: Sacrifices God desires are words of true repentance, and offerings of true
worship (Heb. 13:15).
V5-8 – God’s Covenant love restores Israel in:
a.) Fruitfulness: The lily.

b.) Stability: Roots like cedars of Lebanon.

c.) Beauty: Olive tree.

d.) Fragrance: Wine.

e.) God Himself, their ever-green shelter: Cypress Tree.

V9 – Hosea reminds God’s people:


a.) To know God and His ways.

b.) To follow Him in righteousness.

c.) To avoid paths leading to destruction.

BRIT CHADASHAH (GOSPEL): Jn. 1:41-51.


Jn. 1:41-51 – The First Disciples Follow Jesus.
V41 – Andrew went to find his brother Simon and said, “we have found the Messiah”.
V42 – Jesus said, “You are Simon, You shall be called, Peter, the rock”.
V43-46 – Philip went to Nathanael and said, “we have found the Messiah”.
V47-50 – Jesus said of Nathanael, “Here is an honest man, a true son of Israel”. Nathanael replied, “Sir,
You are the Son of God, The King of Israel”.
V51 – Jesus added, “You will even see heaven open and the angels of God coming back and forth to Me,
the Messiah”.
Note: Verse 51 confirms Jacob’s dream at Bethel (Gen. 28:10-22).
