Year 1 Themed Candle Holder Criteria A: Inquiring & Analysing

Key Concept, Related Concepts and Global Context

Look in Managebac to find the following:

1.What is the key concept for this project?

Development

2 What are the related concepts for this project?

Form, Function & Resources

3 What is the global context for this project?

Exploration to Develop:

Inquiring and Statement of Intent

Look in Managebac to find the statement of inquiry and questions

4 Statement of Inquiry
Which factor drives and influences design the most; form (the way a product looks) or
function (the way a product works) and how does the choice of material and process affect
these?

5 Inquiry Questions

Factual Question
What types of plastic are there?
What types of timber are there?

Conceptual Question

What are the typical requirements for a successful product? How do we decide which is most
important?

Debatable Question

How do designers decide what to do and what to use when making design decisions?
ATL Skills (Approaches to Teaching and Learning)

6 Which ATL skill do you think you want to focus on improving in this stage of the project. How?

Research skills, thinking skills, self management, and time management skills. I can
use my research skills and research on the Mexican identity their tourist hotspots their
best festivals etc, I use my thinking skills to put answers for my questions using my
research, I will use self management skills to manage my document and make sure to
stick on task, I will last use my time management skills to submit the assignment before
or on time.

Assessment
Strand 1
Explain and justify the need for a solution to a problem
The Design Situation
7 Complete the description of the design situation.
The design situation is that the new global village in India isn’t getting many customers and needs
rebranding so they ask me the designer to rebrand one of their restaurants and give it a nationality
of any country, the country I choose is Mexico.

Explaining the problem

8 Use the following questions to help explain the problem needing to be solved

What is the nature of the problem?

Global village wants to rebrand their restaurants as they are not getting many customers. They
want someone to give their restaurant a touch of nationality of any country I choose. They have
hired me to rebrand one of their restaurants.

Who is it a problem for?

Global Village.

Where is the problem occurring?

Global village

What is the cause of the problem?

Less customers in global village

Justifying the need for a solution

9 Answer the questions
Why do you want to solve this problem?

How could a solution make things better?

Well rebranding makes the restaurant more popular also gives a different feel towards it, that way
more people want to come and try it out with the new look they will be amused and if they enjoy the
food they might come to the restaurant regularly.

Strand 2
State and prioritise the main points of research needed to develop a solution to the
problem

For this project we will research 2 important areas:

1. Our client has requested that the restaurant interior will be inspired by a national theme, so we
need to research the national culture and identity of a selected country. We can do this through
creating a moodboard/ inspiration board made of images that represent the country. This will
help inspire our ideas.
2. As we are designing a tea light candle holder that will be the centrepiece of each table in the
restaurant we need to research tea-light candle holders. This will help us know what a good
solution should be like.

10. Use the table below to create your own research plan.

If we had a lot of time we could inquire into all the research areas you have listed but in Year 1 we will
only be doing an analysis of existing similar products and researching the restaurant theme.

Strand 3
Describe the main features of one existing product that inspires a solution to the
problem

Research: Product Analysis

11. Select 2 existing products that are similar to the one you need to design; one using primary
research and one using secondary research. For each product complete the analysis below

Product 1 (Primary Research)

What product have you chosen?

Why have you chosen this product?

Insert images of product 1 here.

Annotate the image to describe the main features of the product. Don’t analyse yet.
Product 2 (Secondary Research)

What product have you chosen?

Why have you chosen this product?

Insert images of product 1 here.

Annotate the image to describe the main features of the product. Don’t analyse yet.
Research: Client Research
Insert your moodboard here.
Explain (in 3 sentences or less) how you think it will help inspire your design for a solution to
the problem.
I think this will inspire me as after i did a little research these are the main things ive found
about mexico that are favoured more, This can help in rebranding as this gives an idea of
what mexico is.

Strand 4
Present the main findings of relevant research
Now analyse the 2 products (tea light candleholders) you chose.
Give your reasons and opinions for the design features that you see. Use ACCESSFM

Design Brief
26 Write the design brief

A design brief is a statement of intent.

It says what the designer intends to do to solve the design problem.

Think about all the analysis you have done so far to understand the situation, the problem and what
is needed for a good solution. Consider your research and analysis to help you write a detailed
brief.

ATL Skill Self Evaluation

Read and then think about the following questions before giving your answer below in 3
sentences or less.

● Whilst working on this criteria stage of the project did you try to do things a new way?
● What did you try?
● Did you find a new way to do something helpful?
● Please describe the way the new technique helped you?
● Some examples - using a calendar to get more organized, using notes on cards to help
prepare for standing up and presenting in front of others, using a table to organize data,
using a mind map to explore ideas, sketch ideas in 3D using crating, ask questions to
show you are an active listener
● Explain below what you did to develop your ATL skill and say how successful it was. Refer
back to the target you set at the start of this criteria.
● Which ATL skill did you develop?
● Would you consider yourself now to be a Beginner, Learner, Proficient or Experienced?
