Assignment 1

The document discusses various units of heat, including BTU, calories, and joules, explaining their definitions and relationships. It provides conversion factors, such as 1 BTU equaling approximately 252.06 calories and 1055.06 joules. Additionally, it explains the relationship between heat, power, and work as modes of energy transfer that affect a system's internal energy.

ASSIGNMENT 1

1) What are various units of heat

Ans) [Link](British thermal unit), [Link], 3. Joules

2) Explain various units of heat ?

Ans) [Link]: It is the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of liquid
water by 1 degree Fahrenheit at the temperature that water has its greatest density

Calories: The calorie is a unit of energy defined as the amount of heat needed to raise
the temperature of a quantity of water by one degree.

Joules: the SI unit of work or energy. It is equal to the energy transferred to an object
when a force of one newton acts on that object in the direction of the force's motion
through a distance of one metre

3) Drive relation between various units of heat ?

Ans) 1 Btu to calories = 252.05597 calories
1 Btu to joules=1055.055853 J

4) What is the relation between heat and power and work?

Ans) Heat and work are the modes of transfer of energies. They are the only metrics to
change the internal energy of the system.

The change in internal energy as a result of temperature difference between the system
and the surroundings is reffered to as heat. On the other hand when work is done on a
system, the capacity of the system to do work increases, in other words the energy of the
system is increased. When system does work the energy of the system is reduced.
